A tutorial explaining how to use the effects on a DJM-900 Nexus. Some of these same effects are found on other Pioneer mixers such as the DJM-500, DJM-600, DJM-700, DJM-1000, DJM-2000, and even a few others. I have a video about the effects on the DJM-600 that should be watched first, before this video:

I use annotations quite frequently to post clarifications and additional information during the video. For the best educational experience, you might prefer to watch this video in a desktop browser rather than on mobile, unless KZfaq eventually fixes the mobile annotation deficiency.

Check out the video that I did about the effects on the DJM-600 first, that will give you the basics. Then, that plus this video should give you enough to understand everything on the 800, which came out between the other two.

Sure, they'll work together. You might want to upgrade your mixer someday too, if you can afford a newer one. But even if you could afford a new one right now, I'd recommend doing just the CD players first. I always think that it's smart to only buy one piece of gear at a time, because if you buy two, you might ignore one thing. You should probably get the CD players now, and become completely familiar with them, and then think about a new mixer several months from now. Good luck!

I tended not to use the send/returns very often. Some DJ's do, especially if they're into having that extra equipment to play with, but I'd guess that over 90% of DJ's don't use the S/R's. I'd guess that the number even goes higher than that when you're looking at mixers like the Pioneers which have a lot of decent effects built in.

The roll effect goes here to 8 beats I think (not 8 bars as you say;that is, if you mean 4 beats with the word "bar"...I am not sure, because you compared it to notes). The DJM 900 can go to 16 beats, but then the BPM has to be high (sample size decreases when BPM increases).

I like them both. Is the 900 worth that much extra? Debatable. It's definitely a better mixer. But at the same time, there are big advantages to simplicity. I find that when I'm playing on more basic mixers, I pay a lot more attention to the music and have a better time, instead of spending more time with the equipment.

Hi Bolivia, excellent tutorials of yours, very clear and informative. Few days ago I bought DJM-900NXS and I can't seem to figure out how ECHO FX works, I activate it and it seems that it's not working at all, anything I am turning it doesnt apply any FX. Before I had DJM-600 and FX wise that was perfect as ECHO is my fav FX too, can't seem to control even DELAY at the same comfortability as I had on DJM-600. Any help from you would be much appreciated! Thanks
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 10 жыл бұрын
Vaida, I remember also being confused about the Echo when I first started to play with it, and I ended up reading up on it in the manual before it made sense. I don't have a 900 in the studio that I'm in right now, but if I can get my hands on one, I can probably do a short Q&A video to demonstrate. In the meantime, check out the effects section in the manual and maybe that will help. Their manual is actually written half decently.

@vaidariaukaite 10 жыл бұрын
djbolivia Thanks for reply. Yes, I did read manual and managed to get it working, but one thing to hear it through headphones is to activate CUE of effects line and also it still seem to sound not so obvious and clear as it was on DJM 600... Would be nice if you could make little video about the ECHO fx on it anyway.

Sorry for the 2 part post! But the effects I like using a lot are types of echos and reverbs and some filters if they sound nice (serato dj filters sound lots nicer than the onboard mixdeck quad filters. RMX 1000 has filters but they can only be used in conjunction with effects like echo). I actually like phasers too and beat changing effects too like slip rolls and loop rolls too. on RMX 1000 barely use spiral/reverb up, spiral/reverb down. They're too in your face for me. Wat do you recommend?
@djbolivia

Can you tell me a lot about what you're looking for? What styles do you play? Do you expect to use MIDI a lot? What kind of other equipment will you potentially integrate? Do you play using CD's or vinyl, or some sort of software? If software, which package or packages? I'll try to answer, but I'm heading out right now. If you can, post on my facebook page (fb/djbolivia) because it could be a pretty complicated answer and YT only lets me post a paragraph or two.

Thanks Senor! 'Having an issue with DJM-850. I am trying to connect an external effects unit using the effects send and return loop and I cannot hear any sound at all unless the level/depth (wet/dry) on the mixer is turned all the way up. The way i see it is i should hear a dry signal when the mixer eff. level button is turned all the way down. Should this button always be all the way up on this part. mixer when using ext. effects and then control the wet/dry from the ext. effects unit?Thanks

It sounds like you are only getting the effect, and the original is not being included. Dry should give you 100% original, Wet should give you 100% effect, and anything in between should be a mix of both in various ratios. Strange, did you get this figured out yet?

hello! i had a question about mixers. I am indecisive between the DJM 900 Nexus, Xone DB2, and Denon x1600. I currently use an RMX 1000 with a mixdeck quad since it doesn't have many great effects. I spin mostly progressive/electro house and hiphop/trap music n don't intend on using software really. I don't use crazy effects really I prefer sublter (except for loop rolls). idk if i need send/return if the provided effects are comprehensive. and would prefer one w digital inputs.

Hello Sir, why to do keep comparing it to the 600 and not the 800?
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 9 жыл бұрын
Great question. I didn't ever own an 800, and I've only borrowed them occasionally. Also, although the 800 is more recent, and was a club/industry standard for a short time, the 600 was a stronger standard, and for a much longer time frame (over a decade). So I'm just used to playing on 600's in many many more locations, even though it is an older piece of equipment.

Why would you put the master level at max... and the channel trims at normal levels?!? Turn the channel trim up, master level down, and turn your speakers up!
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 8 жыл бұрын
+Dakoolguy111 My theory is that if you leave headroom on the master, above what you would like to see as the proper highest master volume in a club or other environment, if somebody else comes on to use the mixer they are often going to turn the volume up higher than when you left it. All DJ's do this. It's part of their DNA, thinking that the louder they are, the better they sound. And then they start blowing speakers. So this is more of a smart preventative way of not letting things get out of control. Of course, in a professional environment, you hopefully have a sound engineer to oversee all of this and to make sure the DJ's are red-lining the mixer and making peoples' ears bleed, and they probably also have a compressor in the system between the mixer and the amps to impose a brick-wall limiting function above a certain point, so the DJ can't overload the system. I probably sound cynical with this explanation, but when I was running a club, I had far too many experiences of DJ's blowing up speakers until I put in compressors and also started to teach my DJ's about the importance of proper gain staging.
@dakoolguy111
@dakoolguy111 8 жыл бұрын
A very valid argument! I agree i have seen this happen firsthand in nightclubs and events. The way i see it, either djs should be better educated and understand the truth about gain balance and stuff, or there should always be a sound technician/engineer monitoring the signal before it goes to the amps. That being said, with my ddj-sx, i usually try to keep the master volume at around 12 o' clock. I have found that if i push the master up too far, i get a really noisey, static-y signal coming out of it.
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 8 жыл бұрын
+Dakoolguy111 Ah, yes, that's a good point that isn't unique to just that one piece of equipment. I've seen that on certain mixers, where you get distortion or crackle at the very top (or very bottom).

why are you surprised this uses a 1/4 inch headphone jack? No mixer uses 1/8th inch...
@djbolivia
@djbolivia 10 жыл бұрын
I'm just surprised that that's the only option. Some pro mixers actually use both. Also, forgetting the past, it would make sense in the future for 1/8" to be an option more frequently just because about 90% of the headphones out there come as 1/8" or come as 1/8" with an adapter for 1/4". I think 1/4" is better for professional use, but the fact that 1/8" has become so common in the past ten years because of phones, computers, tablets, etc., makes me think that more DJ gear could adapt to be more flexible.
@MrTechnics1200s
@MrTechnics1200s 10 жыл бұрын
djbolivia Strength of the 1/8" is weak and you would more then likely break it. Over the years I can tell you how many times I got the cord caught and pulled on the jack hard. 1/4" is so much stronger. But I do agree that 90% of headphones come with a 1/8". I guess they are gearing more toward the ipod market more then DJ's sadly.

MrTechnics1200s I'm not a big fan of the mixers with the jacks on the front, for exactly that reason. I've occasionally bumped my headphone connection pretty hard on a few of these.

It's a remix of one of my own tracks called "Global Underground." If you go into the description underneath the video, I've got a bunch of download links. You can download a free copy from SoundCloud if you want.
