The classic egg dropping experiment is changed to a more interesting version of the egg catching experiment. The activity has been a staple of science classes fro years, but here is my version of it. Students are required to build a device that catch a raw falling egg and are test at three heights to prove the worthiness of their design.
Homemade science is a collection of classroom tested ideas, suggestions, projects, and experiments that I have used in teaching physical science for the Annville-Cleona school district in central Pennsylvania. I am currently in my 38th year of teaching. My intention is to share these ideas with other teachers or anyone who has an interest in science. I have found that designing and building my own equipment has taught me more than any course that I have ever taken. I hope that you consider trying this for yourself.. I also share and show some of these ideas at workshops, science conferences, or inservice presentations.
Videos are shot with a Casio EXH20. Slow motion video clips are either 3.5 or 7 times slower.

Bruce Yeany My teacher did this as well My friend and I were able to design one that could take 40 meters(top of school bleachers) You take a cardboard box and put a folded up blanket in the bottom and lay a pillow sheet over the top We ended up improving that design further by also laying a small blanket over the top but under the pillow case Make sure to make the blanket laying over top to be slightly concave and the pillow sheet to also be slightly concave but less than the blanket That way it has multiple layers of absorption That design never failed and put performed anyone else I've ever seen do it

Awesome video! Love the idea. I did the classic version in middle school, and this version in high school, so I was lucky to experience both. I have to say, this version is much more fun, because the most popular way in middle school to protect the egg was to nest it in a jar of peanut butter and drop it from the roof of the school. You won't get away with that with this project!

Do you collect data from the drops? I'm interested how many groups make it from 2m to the 4m mark, then to 5m? Do you find that if they make it to the 4m drop they usually always make it to the 5th meter?

last year we did an egg drop like this where you have something catch the egg, and all the materials we got was 15 sheets of paper a meter of tape and a foot of string, no one in the class thought it was possible, but actually a lot of eggs survived

But can you explain the physics behind it?
@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 9 жыл бұрын
Sanjana Pratti HI Sanjana, The success or failure of the egg project is explained by Newton's second law and the idea of impulse. In this case the force applied to the egg is to decelerate it. If you watch my video on impulse, it shows that you can throw an egg as hard as possible into a sheet and not break it. However, if an egg is dropped on the floor it will break every time. The idea is to build a device that does the same thing. A successful project will slow an egg down over a longer period of time so that the force is decreased enough that the egg's shell doesn't break.

So basically in short, you want to create a contraption to decrease the amount of g forces applied to the egg upon landing.
@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 7 жыл бұрын
yes, someday I'd like to know what the amount is
@mrdearellano2835

Correct, you want to lower the average force the egg experiences when it is "caught" by slowing down the "catch" of the egg. Try to catch a raw egg yourself and you will see what I mean.. you move your hands with the egg to slow it down, not stop it quickly. It is essentially an understanding of impulse.

+Octavio Torres Hello Octavio, I have a pretty good understanding of physical science but I must be quite naive in the political correctness of music. This is the third song that I've chosen where it has been suggested that some people might find it objectionable. I'm just choosing music that I think works with the video, nothing more. thanks for the note!
@christiangeiselmann
@christiangeiselmann 7 жыл бұрын
Octavio Torres I did not know that Wagner was such a sensible topic when you are a jew (but of course, yes, as Wagner being honoured by leading nazis at the time, I can understand). The other thing to be aware of is that that piece of music (Ritt der Wallküre) was used both in nazi propaganda and in more modern war movies to acoustically illustrate acts of aggression, most popularly probably in "Apocalypse now", and so, for me personally, it even has become a signature melody of aggressive warfare and its (thoughtless?) glorification. - In contrast, I recently saw a video made by a guy who shows what he does with metal working, e.g. on his lathe, and instead of aggressive sounds he used music by J.S. Bach, and so the (essentially aggressive) lathing became a joyful, peaceful, barock festivity, almost a dance. Perhaps you could try something like this? Dropping eggs with Mozart?
