Our third video in our Prosthetic Transfer series will explain how to create gelatin prosthetic effects using store bought products. Including Knox Gelatin, Sorbitol and Glycerin which were all purchased at a local grocery story in the pharmacy section.
This is a consumer grade gelatin and not recommended for use in creating large prosthetics only small wounds, bullet holes and scars. Prosthetic grade gelatin is a 300 Bloom. Knox Gelatin is around 150 Bloom which means, Knox Gelatin is not as dense and not as durable. But we show you in this video that consumer grade gelatin (Knox Gelatin) can still be used for small prosthetics when in a pinch or if you would like to just try it out as a test makeup.
WARNING: The mixture can be very hot. It is recommended that you use protective eye glasses, protective clothing and insulated heat resistant gloves while mixing and heating the chemicals in this video.
Ingredients used for Gelatin Prosthetics:
1/4 cup (6 to 8 packets) Knox Gelatin
1/3 cup Sorbitol
1/3 cup Glycerin
.5 gms (1/2 of a 1/4 tsp.) Crushed Makeup Compact
.07 gms (1/2 of a 1/4 tsp.) Red Focking

No, witch hazel and latex are totally different. Witch hazel dissolves the seams to make them invisible. Latex is sometimes used to repair thick seams and for building up areas.

Hey Brian, It is recommended by the alcohol makeup companies for best results to use 99% isopropyl alcohol. Thanks, Egghead FX (:

70% will also give you a slight pigment but 99% you get it's full potential, if you play with the illustrators pigments with different tones of the same colour using more or less isopropyl 99% is the only thing to use

@EggHeadFX

+Nicole Polen Oh yes, corn Starch would work fine. The goal of using a powder is to keep the latex from sticking to it's self. Even a translucent powder would work. Even flower would work. :)

So what sort of Prosthetic adhesive are you using for the gelatin to attach to the skin? Is it Pros-aide or spirit gum or a general remover that works for both? Can you use both Pros-aide or spirit gum with gelatin???
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 4 жыл бұрын
I do use pros-aide, Spirit gum is not very sticky for this type of use. I found a really nice make-up remover called: Cetaphil gentle make up remover. It works really well removing pros-aide.and is easy on the skin.

+Egg Head FX So what do you recommend to dissolve latex.
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any chemical that is safe to use on people. Latex is a rubber material. You can't dissolve rubber without using harsh chemicals that create a toxic fume that burns it away and both cannot be done without hurting someone "Don't Do It". The only way to clean up your edges on a latex piece is to build up the edges with more latex or prosaid and cabsil "cabopatch".

Egg Head FX Alright thanks. I really appreciate it.Because I just made some latex and ive been having problems shaping the edges. It's for a project at school. This was a life Savior. I've been using a manicane for now. This is real informative because I don't want to accidentally hurt someone.

Yes, you should NEVER use chemicals directly on skin that are not intended for skin. Always think of the safety of the actor.

In order to make larger, durable pieces, do you use the same recipe for the other gelatin?
@EggHeadFX

Yes you can. There are several recipes for gelatin prosthetics floating around the internet. They are all similar with small variations to the measurements. But all about the same. Thanks. :)

Hi Egg Head, can I substitute the sorbitol ? Or why you use it? Thank you :)
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 7 жыл бұрын
Sorbitol is used to make the prosthetic last longer in the open air. If you were to only use water and gelatin when creating a prosthetic, the prosthetic would dry out real quickly and dissolve quicker when exposed to any heat like the sun or hot movie lights or even a person's body temperature.

would this method work with half a face mold? Also could u use any other paints on the prosthetic or would Alcohol based paints only work on it?
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you could do a half face molds but it would need to be a two part mold to get good feathered edges. And Yes you can use other makeups like color wheels and cream makeup. But first test the makeups on a sample gelatin piece to make sure the colors looks natural and not un-natural on the skin.

Can I use the witch Hazel for blending the edge of the Latex prostetics? and also for the prosaide+cabosil prostetics? or for Cap? or it works only for gelatin? thank. I follow u from Rome. Sorry for my english.
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chiara, You can only blend gelatin with witch hazel. There is nothing safe to use to dissolve latex. Some people say to use acetone but that does not work it will only burn the person and can cause serious injury. You have to stipple over the latex seams or build it up to blend it into the skin and the same with prosaide+cabosil prosthetic. Some bald caps are made out of a plastic cap material and can be blended with tiny amounts of acetone or 100 proof alcohol. But latex will not blend that way. Don't believe anyone who says you can blend latex with acetone. They will only hurt the actor. My main recommendation is to make sure your prosthetic edges are very, very thin and irregular then you can do a light stipple over the edges if needed. That is the best way to make your edges blend into the skin. Thank you for posting. :)

+Nikita Austin I think its just water in what I have. You can do a test with what you have available. Do a little experiment see if it dissolves the edges on a thin piece of gelatin. If it works then you are good to go. :)

You can keep your prosthetic in the fridge for several weeks and in the freezer could last several months. Remember it's made from food grade products. (not edible but made from some food products) So it will have a shelf life.

@jensenthom 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Spoiled, glycerine keeps the gelatin appliance from drying out and makes it stronger. If you just use water you will have food grade jello which does not work at all for make up effects.

Hello, I have another question I hope u can help me :c I am doing a prosthetic "mask" and I wanted to use this technique but I dont know if this will help for a long time. Actor have to wear it for hours and I'll going to make it one week before. Is this going to melt? or something? And, can I glue it with látex? and about paint, can I use other kind, like creamy paintings? please help, thanks!
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 8 жыл бұрын
+diesehexe Many questions... First gelatin can melt. It's not the best material to use for prosthetics because it doesn't hold up well in heat or under hot lights. It is also not the most flexible for prosthetic it can be heavy depending on how thick the mask is. There is a material called, "Foam Gelatin" that might work. You will have to research it. Foam latex and silicone would be better choices. You cannot glue gelatin with latex. You need to use prosthetic adhesive. You should do a test makeup to see if it fits your needs. Good luck.
