Early generations of car batteries used wood which could wick up moisture from concrete. Modern batteries have no problem being stored on concrete.

This is totally correct for battery longevity. I have four 7.5 AH and four 2.5 AH batteries. I don’t use the Rapid Charger at all. The only exception might be when I’m using my Powerstation for extended periods of time.

Can you return it to Lowes? They should have taken care of you since it was a new purchase. I would take it back there and demand they exchange or return it.

3.6 V is nominal for most NMC batteries (50%SOC). Lower cutoff voltage can be in the range of 2.5-3.0 V, but I don't know the value for ego's cells.

"using the slower charger is better for battery longevity" A fact that not enough people are aware of and it disappoints me that there isn't a switch on either the battery or charger to slow the charging down to a trickle, for example, if I know it's going to snow overnight, I'd like to charge slow enough to be fully charged by morning, I'd also like to be able to *not* fully charge if I know I won't need full batteries. Oh well, EGO has features they can work on for the future.

I assume you ensured the batteries hadn't entered the self-maintenance mode? If so, you'll need to recharge before using.

Interesting you say that because that was my experience too. The 7.5s I got with my snow blower seem to have rolled over and they are the one with the gauge. Must be a BMS problem.

So if you use it for a mower that is used once a week, do you charge it and then take it off the charger? Also wondering what to do over winter. His video says it will go into storage mode and stay at 30% but later says don't leave on charger?

After mowing, I charge to 1-2 bars if below that, then remove from charger. When it is time to mow again, I charge to 100% before I use it.

The rapid charger isn't super fast and it cools the batteries so I don't think there is a degradation issue with using it. It is best not to over charge them but charging them until completion using the EGO charger should be fine as the charge controller will prevent overcharging.

You want to remove it from the charger when it is finished charging. I'm guessing it probably wouldn't cause harm if you didn't remove it immediately. I'll usually remove it within 24 hours of putting it on the charger. I usually use mine in my blower over the winter but it probably wouldn't hurt to charge it once or twice in the off season.

I leave mine on the tool and haven't had any problems. I will remove it and charge it if I think the charge is low so it will be fresh for the next use. If I am not using it for a while, I just store them on my basement floor. I'm not sure if there is any ill effect from storing them in the unplugged charger.

No problem with lithium. They don't have "memory" like older ni-cad batteries.

You can charge it up all of the way but it will go into storage mode after 1 month by automatically partially discharging. It will continue to self-discharge (which is the nature of lithium batteries). I'm not sure how long you could store it without damage. You might contact EGO for that information and be sure to include which battery you have.

It is bad to completely deplete a lithium battery. Thankfully, pretty much all lithium batteries or systems have circuitry to turn off the battery when the charge gets low. As such, when the battery quits working, it still technically has charge in it. It just isn't accessible to the user in order to prevent complete discharge. Lithium batteries will also self discharge over time so you wouldn't want to leave it in this low charge state for an extended period (i.e. weeks or months). It could self discharge to a point of ruining the battery. I think it is probably technically okay to leave the battery on the charger all winter but most people would recommend against it. You never know when something bad (like a power surge) is going to cause problems. It supposedly self discharges to 50% after a month. I use mine in my snowblower but if I didn't, I'd throw it on the charger once or twice over the winter season.

You can charge it right away. The old NiCad rechargeable batteries people used to use had a memory so you needed to deplete them completely before recharging. Lithium don't have a memory like that. You can recharge them any time you like. Lithium batteries can be ruined if you deplete them completely. The battery has circuitry to shut off power before it hits 0%. The problem is if you run them until they shut off and store them for an extended period. They can self discharge to the point of ruining themselves. You always want to make sure there is a decent amount of charge in them when storing.

What's the problem with them being on the floor? As long as there's no risk of being tripped over, it's as good a place as any. Perhaps inside a plastic bin would be good just in case of a water intrusion but otherwise... ?

Yes. You can charge any of the batteries on any of the chargers.

Ego recommends removing them from the charger after they are charged. The flashing red typically means it has gone into storage mode. You can charge them back up before you use them.

It is hard for me to judge exactly. I can still usually mow my entire lawn on one charge. An exception to this is when the lawn is very long and or wet. In that case, I sometimes have to finish using one of my snowblower batteries. That was occasionally the case when it was new though. I am guessing that the batteries don't have the same run time as when they were new but they are still meeting my needs.

I would look for local places that offer recycling. In my area that would be places like Interstate Battery, BatteriesPlus or Home Depot.

I don't know of any way to rejuvenate these batteries. Are you within the warranty period? You might try contacting EGO.

@@Rickmakes I contacted EGO but unfortunately the warranty has expired. I also visited a Batteries + Bulbs store for help and they indicated that since they were Lithium batteries, it was dangerous to try the usual Ni-Cad tricks to recharge a dead cell. Thanks again!

I guess that sounds contrary. 🤔 Good catch! Any decent system that uses lithium batteries will have protection circuitry to kill power before it is at 0%. The battery is "depleted" for all intents and purposes but it will still have some charge left in it. If you were to leave it for a long time in this state, it could self discharge to a level that could harm the battery. This is why you don't want to store lithium batteries discharged.

@@1artistatwork It was past warranty, but I bought the leaf blower with battery and it works fine with weed wacker.

Jump start it with the good battery. Its easy, positive to positive and negative to negative. Connect it for 60 secs and it should charge.

It is best to remove them from the chargers. You could deplete them a little if you want but they supposedly do that on their own when in storage mode.

@@Rickmakes - Thank you! The batteries are now removed from their chargers and sitting on a shelf farthest away from the garage door. BTW, when using them during the season, the surge protector the chargers are all plugged into, is actually connected to a WiFi smart plug. So when I put the batteries all back on their chargers after use, and while they’re still hot/warm, I set a timer to turn on the smart plug after about an hour or so. This way I don’t have to actually go back out into the garage and flip the switches. Kinda hard to go around the car and reach the chargers on the opposite wall without a bit of holding my breath, so this is perfect!

No problem. I'll take them off the charger if I remember but I've left them on for weeks. The circuity doesn't allow the charger to overcharge the battery.

EGO recommends not storing them in the snowblower. I would think you could put them in the slots but not click them into position until you are ready to use it.

I don't think it is necessarily harmful to leave them on the charger but EGO recommends removing them after charging. I'm guessing this is is to lessen the risk of something damaging the batteries while on the charger like if the charger were to go bad or if there was an electrical spike in the power (like from lightning).

@@Rickmakes Hmm interesting. Also, what about the more 'extreme' heat and cold in the summer and winter? I store them in the garage. I just bought them and weather is mild right now. I wonder how they react to temperature.

@@EpicStays Heat can cause damage to lithium batteries. You can also damage them by charging them if they are below freezing. If I understand correctly, the batteries have circuitry to prevent charging when too hot or cold. I store mine in my basement on the concrete floor.

@@Rickmakes But I imagine majority of people store these either in their garages or sheds, so I'm wondering if Ego intended on people leaving them there year round in more 'extreme' temperatures? Last thing I wanna do is shorten the lifespan of these bad boys. I have a 7.5ah, a 5ah, and weirdly, a 4ah that came with the new trimmer.

I don't have any advice on fixing them. The electronics are sealed in epoxy. Messing with the cells can be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. I would take them to a place that recycles batteries like BatteriesPlus, Interstate Battery or search your area for battery recyclers. Definitely don't dispose of it in the trash as it could start a fire at the landfill amongst other reasons.

Yeah. That surprised me. It is the cooling fan. I wish it had a slow charging mode that was quiet as I usually don't need it to charge quickly.

That's a myth from the days of when battery casings were wooden boxes. Modern batteries have no problem being placed on the concrete.

@@Rickmakes lol, wood is no more conductive than plastic. I assume it's ions. My other lithium batteries warn of concrete floors.

@@Rickmakes I looked it up, and you are correct. Back in the day wood cased batteries would sweat if on concrete. The moisture was conductive and drained the battery.

I remember back in the 80's my cousin's would make sure to never leave their radios on the concrete.it was like an olde wives tale. I can also remember putting dead batteries in the freezer and squeezing the last juice out of them. It was like primitive cryogenics. Them radios back in the day took like 13 D batteries and we were broke.

I'm at 7 years on my oldest EGO battery and it is still going strong. I have heard stories of other people having their batteries die prematurely. I really wish EGO would have a program to replace batteries for a discount once they go bad. For not much more than the battery, you can get a whole new mower, snowblower, etc...

@@Rickmakes I agree. I've had the 52 cm mower and edge trimmer since 2019 with 7.5 Ah and 2.5 Ah batteries. I also have a newer chainsaw, hedge trimmer and brush cutter with 2.5 Ah batteries. This year I bought a 5 Ah battery. The 7.5 Ah does the mowing and we have a hectare of land here in France, not all of it mowed but all our EGO kit works really hard. This year the 7.5 Ah battery would only do 2 minutes of work. I phoned the help line which is in Canada but was advised to buy a new battery!!....I know full well that inside the packs are 18650 Tesla-type cells which could be replaced so I asked them if they do a refurbishment service or knew any company who did...No, 'just buy a new battery'..I told them they needed to up their game and think about the ecological impact of their products. By accident I put the 7.5 Ah on the EGO slow charger (we have the fast one and a slow one) and left it there for a few hours after charging. When I tried it again it gave me 20 minutes of use which is an improvement. Apparently the BMS needs to 'top balance' the voltage on the cells and by leaving it plugged in on the charger this is what happened. I've had an electric car since 2019 (Kia e-Niro) and have suffered no range loss at all in 103,000 km. Kia recommend to charge the car to 100% once every month to six weeks even if not needed. This gives the BMS a chance to look at the V max on the cells, spot any weak ones and lift the voltage slightly on the others. From new there is always some 'headroom' on the cell voltages to allow for this. I am guessing this is what is happening with my EGO batteries.

Thank you for the correction. From watching other videos it appears the "heater" is in the potted circuitry on the top of the battery. I'm guessing it is just a large resistor.

I haven't. I have three but they all work. If it is within the warranty period, I would contact EGO.

@@Rickmakes I've had three batteries go bad and one charger. But, never a failure with other brands. EGO has said quietly that they don't want to discuss with customers what changes they have made to the latest gen batteries but it is clear they are failing more often...there is a well known YT video about this...

There are pros and cons to each. I've had this over five years and have only had to sharpen the blade. I like not having to buy fuel. There is a lot that can go wrong with a gas mower. I was just talking to my neighbor whose gas mower had the self propel cable break. She said she had just replaced the pull cord recently too. I think I could run into trouble if/when something breaks on my EGO. With gas mowers, it is usually pretty easy to get parts.

​@@Rickmakes Any seller of electric lawn mowers should make a video of having to change the oil in a mower having a bit of gasoline still left in the tank.

That was an issue back when battery casings were made from wood. A battery sitting on concrete could absorb water and swell. Setting batteries on concrete is no longer an issue since battery cases are made from plastic.

Did you have a problem with your EGO? I had a Honda. I gave it to my brother and it died. My EGO is still going strong.

The battery has circuitry to keep it from depleting to zero charge so you can use it until the mower shuts off. The danger would be leaving it for months at this depleted state as the circuitry can't prevent self-discharge.
