Napoleon’s invasion in 1798 exposed Muslim Egypt to the power and ideas of modern West. In his wake, Egypt became the first Islamic polity to attempt modernization. Egypt made economic progress under British occupation but democracy during the inter-war period proved inept and corrupt. Era of Nasser brought some progress but did not resolve the ideological tensions between modernity and religious order of society. During the Arab Spring, army once again emerged as the arbiter of society’s split between Islamism and secular nationalism. Two centuries after the modernization drive of Muhammad Ali Pasha, Egypt remains poor, fragmented, and undemocratic.

Thanks for a very comprehensive view of Egyptian history. About Napoleon's attack in Egypt, I wish you had mentioned in detail the deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphics by one of the scholars he took with him to Egypt - Champollion. Another glaring mistake is your pronunciation of Nasser - it is Gamal Abdul Nasser not Jamal Abdul Nasser. Same for Gen. Neguib not Najeeb. Because Egyptians pronounce J as G. That is one of the differences in Egyptian Arabic pronunciation and modern standard Arabic pronunciation. A brief aside which might interest you. The prophet Moses took the Hebrew clans from Egypt across the Sinai searching for the promised land of Canaan ( modern day Israel). He wandered for 40 years probably lost in the desert before the Hebrew clans sighted Canaan. It took me just about 9 hours to cross the Sinai from Cairo to El Arish the border with Israel/ Gaza. The former Israeli PM Golda Meir used to joke: Moses chose the only place in the Middle East which did not have oil!!!

Dear Ti Ny Pronunciation of the letter ج is valid as Jamal “outside” Egypt. Gamal for جمال pronunciation is specific to Egypt and nearby areas.

This question shows the view of 5th grade education history being taught in India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s history consists of its people, and it’s federating regions. Funny that someone drinking $hit-laced water of River Ganga is questioning people who have history of Harappa and Moenjo Daro and the whole Sindh valley. Indian Republic is one day younger than the republic of Pakistan. This fact is meant for those who are here to learn.

There is a serious flaw in every thinker in Pakistan. It is a total ignorance of their own history. He talks about many superficial similarities between Egypt and Pakistan but has no idea that both these regions had great ancient religions that were destroyed violently by Islam! This refusal to admit their Hindu past renders all their scholarship suspect and they appear like clowns.
