Actually Russia has developed Active protection system first. Then Israel. Although Israeli is more popular.

For around 20 years american researchers tried developing their own similar system. But the best that they could make was called the Iron Window, and it worked by sending downwards a high explosive blast wave when the incoming missile was 1 inch from hitting the vehicle! Literally at the point of physical contact! Israel tech disables the incoming missile several feet away from the vehicle. So would you feel safer having a defence system trying to stop the missile from 1 inch from your vehicle, or when it's several yards away?

Iron Curtain, not iron window. Iron Curtain might be better at reducing collateral damage to accompanying infantry, but my biggest issue with it is the enemy can just target the countermeasure rack. It doesn't appear that the APS can counter threats aimed directly at it. If it can, then it's better because there's a lot more countermeasures unless Iron Fist can reload itself quickly.

you mean 'iron curtain' from artis and/or 'strikeshield' from Reihnmetall. Both implementing the same idea. Pros: less collateral damage, low radar signals signature. Cons: no top attack protection.

The pressure wave of the explosion knocks the round out of the way, it's a neat system.

@@ricardoospina5970 thanks for your explanation: sounds awesome: after all the amount of forward energy the ke rounds have is considerable and they are not big targets for the blast. At a guess the explosion would have to be in quite a specific position or could there be a chance that the round will just be diverted to another point on the armour? Perhaps i am overcomplicating things but i think there might be a lot of computation going on here?

@@richardrobinson4869 when I watched the video of it's testing the explosion also seems to break up the round as well as knock it out of the way. I suppose if the vehicle behind it has light enough armor it still might hurt it. I beat even armor that can stop 12.7 mm would protect it from major damage.

All it has to do is hit the round with enough shock to angle it’s approach, then like in the video you still see animation of the “disabled” round flying towards tank but it essentially bounces off because the tip is no longer pointed at the tank.

Το σύστημα είναι πραγματικά το καλύτερο αλλά κοστίζει πολύ. Ο ελληνικός στρατός δεν το χρειάζεται και τόσο, διότι δεν πολεμάμε τρομοκράτες, οπώς κάνει και το Ισραήλ ή οι ΗΠΑ. Η καλύτερη άμυνα σε ένα τάνκ είναι να μη φανεί καν στους εχθρούς, γι'αυτό και τα τάνκ έχουν smoke launchers.

There will be a solution to the Iron fist. A missile with two shape charges. One right behind the other. If this will ever be possible. Even though Iron fist is brilliant. Technology is changing the way wars are fought today. Anything is now possible. 👍😎🇺🇸

in israel , they do actual battle testing for stuff. not dummies with best weather scenario you can possibly find. if that system won over the other israel system named trophy in the recent military contracts? it means it passed it on the same tests. ie 6 rockets at the same time being launched at it. so no . no 3 layer option will work here. though i guess it has a round limit.

Iron Fist is mostly designed for infantry fighting vehicles, which usually don't encounter enemy armor anyways - these vehicles are designed to protect the crew from infantry fire, not tank shells. regardless, not only do modern IFVs do include some protection against tank shells these days (like composite armor/ERA) but this system *can* actually stop tank shells. As for bombs, it's very difficult nowdays to accurately fire artillery towards enemy armor positions without getting immediately detected. even nowdays, artillery is not accurate enough to be reliable for destroying enemy tanks and it's mostly used as a way to make the enemy retreat/strip it's protection before charging in.

If it can intercept high angle or top attack munitions, it should be able to defeat a bomb pretty easily. A bomb is relatively slow moving compared to a missile.

@@CloroxBleach0 depends on the artillery system tho. many systems, like the Swedish Archer artillery system is pin point accurate, and the US has also made shells wich GPS sell forrect themselves in flight to be deadly accurate. and even a near hit with a 155mm HE shell landing within 5-10 meters of an MBT will count that MBT as a mission kill. that thing wont function again without major repairs. and Archer and that US artillery shell has a hit area of 1 meter of where they aimed. so a direct hit, or even a 155mm HE shell exploding within the iron fists hard kill area will still majorly fuck up that tank.

@@cmdrantezscar3368 Thanks for the info! while I don't expect Iron fist to be capable of neutralizing artillery shells, from what you said I suppose it *is* somewhat of a problem. But at the same time, it doesn't seem like a big enough problem to make IFV manufacturers design counter systems for them... I think that the largest reason for that is that while artillery may be more than capable of taking out a puny IFv (even in a non direct hit) it's not meant to be deployed against IFVs. Like I said, Artillery is usually for weaken enemy lines before going in, and it's probably just not worth it to deploy a whole artillery gun against some IFVs, which could be out of it's range in some scenarios.

This is just a copy of the Soviet era invention from late 1970:s - Drozd. It was used on T-55 during Afghan war in the 80:s. The latest russian version is Arena-M
