This is the full version of Elbow's song First Steps, written by Guy Garvey for the BBC's London 2012 Olympic coverage and performed by Elbow, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the NovaVox Gospel Choir. All music rights are held by BBC and Polydor Ltd.
The montage contains segments from the BBC's closing montages, and the Canadian broadcasters CTV. All rights are help by BBC, CTV and the IOC.

4 years on, but watching this makes me emotional again. A sporting occasion this country will never see the likes of again in a long time. I remember being glued to the television every day, just soaking it in. And going to the Olympic Park was an amazing experience; the atmosphere, the excitement; it's something I'll never forget. What with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, 2012 was a year that made me proud to be British.

I heard this song on the BBC broadcast of the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony!! When the course of the unique ceremony was shown, this song played! Such a pleasant surprise!

Ah man seeing Jess Ennis receiving her gold medal brings a lump to the throat every time because it meant so much to her. In fact seeing any member of TeamGB who won a gold, silver or bronze medal brings a tear. This has to be our countries finest hour in a hell of a long time. This music invokes sooooooo many awesome memories of 2012. The year the WHOLE country for once came together and the WHOLE world watched in awe.

You're partly right: I used three montages from the bbc (all 1 to 2 minutes long), as well as one or two from other broadcasters (eg CTV). I then cut the montages up to their constituent clips and reorganised them to the music. So you be the judge of its originality...

There have and will alway be divisions, what the majority of people need to overcome is this barbaric belief that having an opposing option means you need to dislike/hate the otherside. When we realise we can choose to agree to disagree and go on with our lives the world becomes a little brighter.

Just months away from Rio 2016 and still fondly reminisce about London 2012. The Games, the medals, the celebrations and just one of the best times to ever be in the capital city. Every spectator, visitor and official did this city proud. I was never really a fan of Elbow, but that music gets me every time!

2012 - a time we were an inclusive and welcoming and proud nation. All fucking downhill from there, look around at 2020 and remember things were, for a couple of weeks that summer, fucking brilliant.

Can someone please invent a time machine? I so want to go back to 2012. For 16 days everyone in the world loved instead of despising our little island. Everyone got along, strangers chatted to each other on the streets. Ah, halcyon days and it was only 9 years ago to.

Jess ennis is 1 tough lady poster girl for the London Olympics the pressure must have been unbearable but she smashed it if she had been fit she would definitely won it in Beijing one personal best and she would have won in rio just left herself to much to do in the 800 metres a superstar
