I love action RPGS, but when it comes to player expression from soft games have felt the same since demon souls.
No real way to combo besides R1 spam and I think that is a real shame. Let me know what you think in the comments down below!

I am going to put this here just in case i misrepresented myself. I love these games, sure my gameplay of me playing elden ring sucks, but I DID beat all of elden rings bosses on release and I did enjoy the game. I did not use summons or ashes. I like the challenge and I love this game. I also understand that these games are really really great games and I am only criticizing the combat, no I do not think that the games are bad, but if you want to take it that way that is on you. After making this video im trying to 100% the game for the DLC because playing it for the video made me remember what it is I do love about these games. (it's not the weapon combat) to how I feel in words so I do not keep repeating myself in the comments, I just want more options. these games have felt the same since demon souls and I personally feel that is kind of lame. If you do not. that is great. No I do not think nioh is a better game. there is a reason why nioh did not do as well as elden ring. Nioh is not nearly as easy to get into, and it's mechanics are overwhelming at best. I think a lot of people are under the impression that I flat out dislike these games. I do not. Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time. I am simply asking for more options for the player. I do not see how more options could be a bad thing for anybody. As I said in the video the core of the combat feels amazing. Playing this game for the video made me go back and I am starting to 100% the game. (the game being Elden Ring) I criticized an element of the game and most of the people who are upset about it, don't really have any sort of argument which is fine why would they argue with someone who made a whole video on it in the comments. I just think it is really funny how sensitive from soft fans are. I never really said anything was outright bad. It is an action rpg game, but the weapon combat feel the same it did in demon souls, Is it really such a bad thing to ask for more options? I don't think so, but people will cry anyways I needed a break from the game, The core of weapon combat is so amazing. The lack of expression is what pushes me away, but after making this video getting it off my chest I am ready to go back to the lands between. Be safe

Looks like all the games you suggested use "face buttons" for attacks... I think this is a lame/ terrible way to do combat mechanics (in a third-person-camera game, but it works great for top-down-camera games); because you can't control your camera while attacking. But I agree that "Attack input combos" like Light+Light+Heavy (they do this a little bit "like different weapons" have different built in combos; I haven't tested/ played with all the weapons, but I know you typicaly get at least two-hit combos Light+Light, but it's usually just a stance-change "right-side attack, left-side attack") would be a great addition to the Souls-Like combat system... And adding Multipul-Input attacks would be nice too: Triggers=Light, Bumpers=Heavy, Both-Triggers=?, Both-Bumpers=? They kind of do this in Elden Ring (Hold Block, wait to be attacked; don't release Block-Heavy Attack=Block-Counter)... more of this would be great! Basically your Character is a *State Machine* and they could add more states even with the same inputs. - (For context, My Elden Ring Controlls; I'm pretty sure most ppl don't play this way... but they should!: Left-Stick-Click=Jump, Right-Stick-Click=Lock-on, Left-Trigger=Block, Right-Trigger=Light, Left-Bumper=Dodge/Sprint, Right-Bumper=Heavy, B=Ash-of-War, Y=Crouch, X=Use-Item, A=Interact.)

"You're supposed to be playing checkers while the bosses play 5D chess while doing a handstand, get over it". The combat needs to evolve. Animation canceling first and foremost. Yes, ER was the best game ever made, but also Yes, games do need to evolve, actually. The bosses can be just as hard without having to have a feeling of dissonance between the player character and the world. Remember when the biggest speculation before ER came out was "How are they going to change the combat from Dark Souls".

Did you know that Souls games and Eldin ring where not solely designed for "multiplayer", the developers have stated this multiple times, they added it in there just for the cultural aesthetic. If they didn't add it everyone would complain "oh i cant play with my friend, or "oh I cant fight random people". The Multiplayer PvE/PvP has never been balanced at all, and its intended that way When Elden ring first came out, a lot of player was begging for the "coliseum" to be open, a few updates later after its release they opened the coliseum, and people still complained about it....

That why ppl praises bloodborne and sekiro combat, cuz they get new and "more" interesting stuff. But Elden ring combat itself is no way near bad, it the combinations of souls combat with alot more option to play. It pretty amazing how they make that roll hit, roll, hit combat to this. @justintolentino9222 12 күн бұрын
You can actually do this in Elden Ring, it's just that the risk in doing so makes it not worth it because of the high damage output of bosses and the loss of time/resources. Monster Hunter has the same boss difficulty as Elden Ring, imo, but the low risk (disengage mechanics, multiple retries, failing the mission refunds mats) allows this type of combat, thus players are able to take risks and be creative in the way they fight. Light-Heavy Combos, Charge Attacks, Weapons/Stance switching can be added to the game, but players will still prioritize being defensive because of the nature of the game. The addition of the Stake of Marika, eliminating run backs, is actually a step towards this.

@@Trugrim another thing is that there is a stigma against using everything in your arsenal in Elden Ring. People label your style cheesing if you do anything other than dodge-pokes. Watching Elden Ring pvp videos confirm this. I’ve been playing souls games since they came out. Every single one of them. I absolutely love them! That said…you have a point. One could argue that melee is outdated or that is simply a deliberate design decision. I also absolutely love God of War and played every single one since the ps2 days. I must admit that GOW combat, story telling and camera have evolved exponentially with each entry. Whereas souls evolution has been more steady. However, if you played the dlc and tried say the Milady for example, you’ll see that they are heading into a more combo oriented direction. Some of the aow are straight up anime moves and some weapons can be thrown mid combat. You just need to dive into the mechanics and dare to try. If all you do is repeating the same button pattern, then of course you’ll get bored rather quickly.

First off, if you compare Demons Souls to Elden Ring in player weapon moveset and variety, it's night and day, DeS is so limited in what you can do. But you are coreect, that even in Elden Ring the amount of player expression isn't terribly high. While I think there is some definite room for improvement there overall I think it is fine. Why? Let me explain. There is only so much complexity you can put in front of the player, else they get completely overwelmed. When it comes to a combat system there are fundamentally two places where the complexity can lie. On the player side and on the enemy side. The player side comprises of defensive options, moveset complexity, combos etc., the enemy side of their moveset, combos, and the technicality, challenge and complexity required to deal with that. My thesis is now: You can't make both sides infinitely complex, you have ti divide it up between the sides. And Fromsoft make the concsious decision to put the bigger emphasis on the boss side. Compare to most other games, bosses have very expansive movests, combos, that are difficult to learn and properly deal with. With the focus on that the player side takes a back seat, in order to not overwelm the player. The simpler player side allows for the complex and interesting bosses in the first place. Now, one might legitimely say, that one prefers a combat system that prioritizes the player side more, but ultimately you can't have it all. The Nio gameplay you show proves this point. Sure you can express yourself more, but in turn the enemies NEED to function more as punching bags, that just take what you throw at them, since if the, had more elaborate and demanding movesets you couldn't express yourself like that. So ultimately it is a preference thing. To finish this, I would even agree, that FS should make their weapons a little more dynamic. For example an R2 attack chains into the second attack of the light attack chain, but not the other way around. Chaining different buttons into each other more smoothly and dynamically would be great. Though, in the DLC FS have improved on that front. The light Greatsword class for example has a mire dynamic moveset.

If you want different combat play a different game, the simplicity of combat is one of the main reasons I enjoy fromsoft games. For me less is more, and there's nothing 'outdated' about that. I personally hate nioh's combat, I feel there's too many options and it results in bloat. I know other people enjoy it and I'm glad they have a game they can enjoy, I wouldn't advocate to change it because of my personal opinion.
@Trugrim
@Trugrim 11 күн бұрын
@@IvorySheep the thing is though, nioh does not require you to master combat to beat the game. You can play nioh just like dark souls and you can make it work. It is a lot slower, but it does work. I have a friend who really uses a handful of moves and gets the job done just fine. I think having an accessible game is not a bad thing, but adding depth wouldn’t hurt anymore If it is overwhelming for you that’s understandable the game is not that great when it comes to approachability. My cousin just sorta spams the same moves and I did the same for a long time to get used to the game, then I wanted to understand it deeper so I took the time to do so. I’m not saying in anyway this game has to be exactly like nioh, only that more options would be nice. Doesn’t have to be nearly as complex as nioh but as of right now it’s extremely simple and I believe it is held back by that where as nioh is not really held back by it’s combat you just haven’t personally enjoyed it

I see a lot of people missing the point. His point being the combat in Elden isn’t as creative and fluid as older games like nioh is. He’s not saying the game is bad or fromsoft needs to make a completely different game. He’s right the weapons all have the same moveset aside from special ash of wars. A lot of you guys are saying he’s missing the point of souls games but when are we allowed to demand more from our beloved franchises? Games should evolve. Everything in elden evolved from the previous souls games EXCEPT the combat and that’s the issue. If elden ring had the combat system or half of the system as nioh then the game would be perfect. The game to me is an 8/10 and still my all time favorite game.

I agree that Nioh2 combat is more technical and more entertaining. However, Elden Ring does have good options for weapons combat. In both games, the fun is to master the bosses, so you can start "styling" - using more of your moveset. On my first playthrough of Elden Ring, I used mostly dodging, light attacks and parry. On my later playthroughs, I noticed there were openings to do all kinds of jump attacks over boss swipes (no, they are not locked behind certain weapons; all weapons have a jump attack). The mastery in Elden Ring is to use the most damaging attack in the short breaks between the boss attacks. The problem is that some of these highly risky moves are not that rewarding. E.g. the stance break value of a charged heavy is only slightly more than a heavy jump attack. But the risk is way higher...

The magic of stuff like elden ring isn't purely combat. It's exploration, looking out over a vista and deciding you want to go to some place far off. And you can. It's about using all the games tools to achieve victory (despite the communities incessant demands you play the game a certain way) The game has many different builds and ways you can achieve victory. I liked Nioh but where Nioh falls short is the story is kinda bland, the world feels disjointed and fragmented cause of how the mission structure is due to it's stage like format. Nioh's combat feels pretty good but to be honest i didnt enjoy it more than fromsoft games. I think i disliked the endgame of nioh which just feels grindy while you hunt for particular armor sets with stats you need to continue pressing into harder content. While Elden ring when you get a weapon, or armor. there's no multiple copies of such. it has a dedicated location where it drops and the fun of attaining these weapons is crafting a build around them. Not just loading up areas over and over farming drops. I respect your opinion though. Maybe from could do a little more to have combat be a little more engaging, just dont overdo it.

This isn’t event considering how you mix these up depending on playstyle you want and the 10* differebt weapon categories. It sounds like a you problem and that you stayed at the very surface of combat. Now you’re here criticizing something without ever fully experiencing it.
@Trugrim
@Trugrim 8 күн бұрын
@@High_Rate136 the point of this video is melee weapon combat. Melee weapon combat is not very deep. Most combos if a weapon as one is either a crouching attack and an ash of war or a light attack ash of war, or something to this effect The 10 different weapon categories are cool, but none of them have more than 7 moves (those moves being light, heavy, jumping heavy, jumping light, crouching attack, running heavy, running light) none of which flow very well with MOST weapons. I beat the game and all of its bosses. Of course I experimented with different builds. and most of the time with bosses you experience the same get away and heavy attack at the best time, or use your ash of war. Or light light spam to get the most damage. Also you “mixing up” the play style is just deciding if you want to hyper armor through attacks with a heavy or if you want to be quick and agile and slice the boss continually with a light weapon. This is a cool contrast, but again not that deep. Everything else about the game is deep and interesting, but the combat seems to be stuck in dark souls 3. Which is another interesting thing because a lot of people still play dark souls 3 pvp because they consider the better game to do so. Which is weird considering how much older it is. I’m not saying that I think it’s better. I think Elden Ring is an upgrade in most ways, but it’s not by much. Adding jumping and crouching attack didn’t really do much for me

I love how everyone is just mad in the comments cuz ut feels like an attack on their personality or something All souls games combat options are whack af, except for sekiro ofc It's like you are being limited so that when you beat the slightly above average difficulty boss you get a feeling that you achieved smthn in ur life

Bloodborne also has good combat because your weapons can change in the blink of an eye, plus you can fluidly change your weapon with an attack that transitions into that weapon's alternate form.

Yes. I still love these games. I understand I may have used harsh words to some people (the word boring really struck a nerve i guess) but it's how i feel. replaying the game right now and it is fun and it is a great game. The combat is lacking... both can be true at the same time, but people are fine with what it is. I also have to keep in mind that I am a fighting game enthusiast (meaning I am okay at best) and love getting my hands on cool combos. Not everyone functions that way, but I wish people would learn how to actually articulate thier points instead of telling me I don't get it. I had to have gotten something since I beat all the elden ring bosses in the base game. Will get around the the dlc when I have the time

sorry i was wrong. what he said and compared it to was much worse. i dont understand how elden ring, an online non linear open world game, has boring/ repeated weapon combat when their are ashe of wars. stances. jump and run attacks. light heavy combos. two handing the weapon or duel weilding the weapon for the same and sometimes different fighting style slightly different attack string. how you popped in my recommended baffles me honestly
@Trugrim
@Trugrim 12 күн бұрын
2 handing weapons gives you one unique combo and one unique jump attack. the game lacks any sort of real combos. I love these games a lot but asking for more variety in your combat is never really a bad thing. saying the combat is outdated when it has stayed more or less the same for years is merely my personal perception. making this video did make me want to go back and beat the game again, but 100% it for the dlc. I may have been a bit harsh in my wording but it wasnt my intention to come off as I hate these games. Bloodborne is my all time favorite game. also key word in your comment "slightly different" attack string. yeah it is slightly different. only slight and nothing more.

@@Trugrim what I’m saying is your comparing it to solo combo based games that don’t have nearly the amount of weapons Elden ring has. Some weapons have special combos for alternating between light and heavy attacks. But the diversity lies in weapon choice. Can’t have so many weapons and also give them all complex attack patterns. You get either or. Your video was a bit pointless
@youssifosama929
@youssifosama929 12 күн бұрын
The amount of weapons you talk about or whatever only make the dmg number go up and the speed of the attack go down, you still spam dodge roll then auto attack between boss combos

@Trugrim

@@Rahkvyo you could still have weapon combos per weapon type. I feel like you can have a LITTLE BIT of both. You don’t have to go all in like nioh but having some sort of combos to use mid boss fight would make the game just a bit more interesting. Someone else commented that you can’t have insane amount of complexity on both the bosses and the player and I think this is a fair point. There are a lot of weapons but most of them share movesets anyways so adding different combos for those shared movesets would not be that hard considering they have had most of these combos in previous games.

yeah after beating bloodborne, dark souls 3, sekiro, and elden ring to completion I just don't get it. I am simply saying the game would benefit from more melee combat options. if you wanna keep spamming r1 and r2 that is perfectly fine by me, but to dismiss this with I don't get it seems like an easy cop out. What I am proposing is not something that would ruin the game for you. As I said I know people who play nioh in a very simple way. nothing wrong with simple but for the people who care give them something else to chew on

Let me make my Melee Character a bad@ss (why does melee *and Faith always suck "compared to magic" = FromSoft a bunch of Chaos Magic SIMPS/ FanBois!!! 😅🤣).

I don't think so, but people will cry anyways
