I just recently got back into board games and this was the first game I purchased. I'm a Lovecraft fan and I enjoy Co-Op games so Eldritch Horror worked really well for me and the small group of players I play with. I love the lore, the decision making and all the flavor this game has. I really love it. Great review, by the way!

Great review, spot on. This is one of my groups favorite games and you hit on all the high notes and the one "perhaps low" note, in that it gets a bit long with more than 5 people. Love the reviews

I may be a bit "late to the party" on this one but I just got "Eldritch Horror" for Christmas and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I've only played it twice, with only 1 or 2 other players, and I've already ordered the expansion set for it from Amazon then went looking around KZfaq for videos about this game and found your channel. This video was useful and helpful, thank you. It clarified some of the game rules that had me scratching my head earlier as I am still slowly learning how to play it. And by the way...just ignore the internet trolls. They do seem to be everywhere. Thanks ladies!

Good Review. In my view the action system makes a huge difference. Instead of getting stuck by a monster (as in AH), you still get to take some actions, and can continue on to your mission. Much more streamlined.

Best videos! After a lifetime of RPG's, with maybe more to come, I want a gaming experience with more structure imposed and less brain cudgeling. I watched several Eldritch Horror videos, simply trying to learn how to play. These were by far the most useful. I really enjoyed watching him play step by step. For me, the videos could have been even slower and more detailed. Thank you!

I hear good things about this game, but I'm hesitant to buy based on what I see of the gameboard and cards. Even though it's supposed to be the whole world, there appears to be substantially fewer locations, cards, and content compared to Arkham Horror. How much replay value is there with the base game by comparison? Being story driven, if players get familiar with most of the event cards I'd expect it to quickly lose its appeal-- even if some of the ancient ones or characters being played are new to them.

Hmm, maybe I will give this a try. I still don't think I'll like it, but I like your comment that there is more focus on player choices rather than resolving tokens on the board (and people claim eurogamers are just cube pushers!). I found in Arkham Horror that there was a lot of complexity in resolving actions, but almost no real player choice. The choices were either obvious once you understood the mechanics, or one choice didn't have any real benefit above the other. I have a casual goal of playing the top 100 rated games on BGG, and your review makes me cringe a little less when someone offers to bring this to the table!

I dont know about this game being shorter , it usually lasts 5 hours for us. A lot longer than arkham horror's (base with maybe 1 or at most 2 expansions) averge of 3h45-4h , even though this is a lot less fiddly , no upkeep almost, begginer-friendly and plain better... We always read our cards aloud , although i really cant get how people think this game is shorter compared to Arkham... In Arkham a losing game will cause a loss a lot faster , in Eldritch it tends to drag out... a lot of time is spent i think chasing after the near mandatory sidequests ,and the veryi mersive improvement of the clues.

Is it only me or is this game impossible (near to impossible atleast) with less then 3 ppl? Me and my girlfriend played for 3 days streight once, we never beat cthulhu once. It was close some rounds but being "close" isnt really winning is it :P Seems like it should be maybe 3-4 players up to 8.

I beat Azatoth on my first playthrough & have won a few other games (probably won about 50%) which were all solo... I guess you're either having a run of bad luck with the dice rolling or your strategy isn't prioritising the right things.

Okay, a couple of notes. 1)Typical FFG means that you pretty much have to get the 1st expansion as it should have been in the base game. 2)You can only have 1 of each travel ticket (rail and boat), so the 2 total you mentioned, but you can't have 2 of the same type of ticket which you showed and kind of hinted at being able to do during your talk-through.
@StarlitCitadel
@StarlitCitadel 10 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want to make a mistake in the rules, but I can't find where it's stated that you can only have 1 ticket of each type. The text on pg. 7 of the rulebook states only the following: "If the investigator is on a City space, he gains one travel ticket of his choice. The investigator cannot gain a Train Ticket unless there is at least one Train path connected to his space. Likewise, he cannot gain a Ship Ticket unless there is at least one Ship path connected to his space. If a player ever has more than two travel tickets, he must choose two to keep and discard the rest." Can you clarify where the restriction on type shows up? And I agree that the expansion adds a lot (especially in terms of replay value), but I don't think it's essential. I've played a lot of Fantasy Flight games without any expansions, and been entirely satisfied -- there are exceptions to this, but I wouldn't agree that it's the norm. - Kaja

StarlitCitadel I bought the game from it's first release and it played fine without the expansion. As with all expansions, it adds to the flavor of the game, not the game-play itself. Your can have ANY mix of the Travel Tickets ... go check out BGG or FFG forums for the right answers.

I don't own the game (want to get), but I've watched probably 20 play-throughs (at least 12 of them different people) of both the base and expansion. Every single person has said specifically that you can't have more than 1 of each ticket. Can't believe that every single one of them is wrong, though who knows if group think happens on YT, but this game clearly doesn't want you flying all over the map in one turn so I'd think that would hold. And sure, the base game looks to be a lot of fun, but this expansion clearly was "Hey, we're sorry we only gave you 10 location cards per area so here buy this expansion to make it 10x more enjoyable." I mean it was clearly stuff that should have been in the base game. FFG makes great games, but they have too many naked money grabs (from goofy card sizes to expansions like this one that should have been in the base game).

Scott Smart There's nothing worse than someone giving an opinion that doesn't have the game, hasn't played the game or bothered to go look at the free PDF rules that are available. Those people who said 1 of each ticket are wrong, end of. GO READ THE RULES YOURSELF!

Actually, there's nothing worse than self-righteous asshats on the internet who go way overboard in correcting people who made an honest mistake. Congrats, you know one thing more than I did. Wow, go get yourself a cookie. Oh, and let me know when you make an error so I can rip into you in a ridiculously over-the-top fashion. Oh, wait, you're probably perfect since people who do this generally are. Again, I've watched more full play-throughs than most people who own the game have actually played. So, everyone made a mistake. It doesn't actually hurt the game to put that rule in. Go get a life. Your first response was sufficient btw (it got posted as I was posting mine). It's your 2nd one I've got a real problem with.

i hate this boring game... tedious to setup , and the decision i made probably doesnt matter much coz every outcome is dependent on a dice roll... definitely not a game for me. Hate it. Glad that i trade it away. but thanks for reviewing it thou .

I can tell this game is immersive when they require players to read text from a card....i don't recall doing that while playing mage knight or other sentinel of multiverse... and the time limit thingy is probably why they can come up with excuses to throw out more expansion for this lame game and milk more money out of people who like nothing more than throwing dices and giggling at each roll result. Totally silly game.. And look what happen after i did a review of it on bgg ? boardgamegeek.com/thread/1188831/eldritch-horror-truly-horror So many people start to jump to it's defense.... these folks are obsessed, possessed or something i tellya..

I agree with you. The setup of this game takes so long (so does Arkham) and then also, its meant to be cooperative, but if you play with a bunch of people you have to just sit and wait. For a game that takes so long to setup and with all the downtime that occurs, when I finally get to do something it isn't that thrilling for me to waste so much time. There are a ton of games that definitely bring more entertainment and in at least 1/3 of the time!

I'd like to defend the game. I think of it as a story generation game, and a good one at that. Yes it is random but that's the point, your characters go on an adventure for good or ill and things happen you can't expect. I even like it when things go horribly wrong, your character could be poisoned and arrested, devoured by demons. The game offers strategy in the way of choices - do you use your precious time and actions to close a gate to extra dimensional terror or solve a clue. Finally the game is hard, the base game without expansions almost impossibly so, and though a victory is a result of blind luck, with the nature of dice and cards, it is rare enough to be rewarding. Mostly however I think the game is about creating stories, and with the number of cards you'll never play the same story twice . It's a cooperative game so it's less about winning or losing than having fun. Enjoy it as you go insane with paranoia and hallucinations and a crippling back injury before you die !

Arkham is quite terrible... I'm sorry! I loved it to bits for years. But playing it today it feels very dated. It is VERY slow, and you often fall into a game that just drag on forever, nothing happends, you just wait for enough clues to be able to close the last 1-2 gates to win, and no gates spawn because you have sealed the most common occuring spots for gates. You just sit there, everyone know you are going to win, but the game keep throwing wrenches in your machinery to slow that process down... pure boring, non exciting.
