Can’t believe how few of views this has, as it’s an awesome video for us. One tip- I often install a second 2” nipple between cans. Then use compression barrel sleeves to extend wire going to load at panel and bring to the switch. If I have lugs in meter can, I leave the neutral alone and run one new neutral from service lug to transfer switch. Most 200 amp meter cans have more space than the one pictured in video, but not all.

Finding your videos super helpful and interesting. I'm not an electrician, I'm actually in health/life insurance sales but very interested in DIY. I've learned some basics of electricity so far thru reading, tutorials, and some practice. I enrolled at my local community college for a basic maintenance class to learn some plumbing, electrical, and HVAC troubleshooting. I think I'll continue towards a residential electricity diploma at least so I can do most of my own things that don't need inspection.

Thank you for the video. To help us all learn the NEC, what code section states you cannot run service entrance, conductors or unfused, conductors and fused conductors in the same raceway? Thank you !

Generator interlock kits are a cost effective alternative to a transfer switch.

Do you have a video about when to remove the bonding between the neutral bar and the grounding bar in the transfer switch?

If off grid and the generator is primary power would you still use a normal transfer switch or treat it mire like primary grid power in that instance.

Awesome, Coach... as ALWAYS. Here in FL, It is customary to back feeder and ranges😔😥 AND everyone wants to use a suicide cord! You can't talk people out of it and it's very disheartening. So maybe they are safe this time, the linemen, EM crew if called to the property for any reason.... chances not good to take.

We can feed dryer or range from generator when transfer switch is installed correct?

I fully understand you cant go back through the same conduit with the load conductors into the meter can to the house panel. But can you add a second conduit back to the meter can and run the load conductors through the meter can to the house panel? Is the issue service conductors and load conductors in the same conduit, or [simply or also] running back through the meter can as a "raceway" to get the load conductors to the house panel?

That's a great question You're not allowed to go back through the meter can

If a meter comes with emergency disconnect the ATS has to be installed after the disconnect ? And in that case since the ATS is not the first disconnect anymore does the ground and neutral have to be separated ?
@rupe53
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
if the meter pan has its own breaker / disconnect then that is where the neutral and ground bond. In this case all other bonds are separated. At 3:20 he shows a Generac style transfer switch and the factory bonding wire is shown intact because there is a main breaker in that style TS. The bond at the house panel (downstream) must now be disconnected. To clarify your first question, the TS is always installed after the meter, and if there's already a main breaker at the meter, so be it. You may wind up with TWO main breakers, depending on the style of TS, but the bonding happens ONLY at the first one, per code.

I followed the first part which is crystal clear. However the second part of never build your own transfer switch or install a generator setup that have the possibility of backfeeding the grid, what you said is ambiguous. Do you mean to say being a professional electrician, you draw the line of not installing a manual interlock even if the interlock kit is listed and made by the breaker box manufacturer? e.g. A Siemens ECSBPK03 type kit.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZ17a9hes5awl2Q.html Great question. I am all about the interlock kits. I was talking about creating your own dryer plug and back feeding it through your dryer, or relying on a system that you have to manually switch without an interlock kit.

Until Georgia's electrical licensing boards get a backbone to enforce instead of just acting as a wallet for states, dangerous issues will remain for back feed and incorrect installs. There is Zero support for us as inspectors, and frankly the new inspectors are simply a warm body to fill a spot. No experience in electrical and no state license in electrical prior and allowing them to inspect simply because they are a paid member of an association is not electrical experience nor a real inspector. It minimizes actual board licensed electricians in the state and will eventually bite them in the ass. And as for this "drive by" inspection crap, forget about it! !
