Honestly I would even say the concept art is much more compelling than what we got in the film. The character designs in early development had more variety, fire people had different flame colors, cloud people had different shapes and heights, they even had fun concepts of what mixing element couples and children would look like.

It's sad because Disney wanted Pixar to make sequels to all their movies and Pixar said no. Pixar was going to split away from Disney when their contract ended, except Disney held the rights to most of the films, so Disney would have taken over the production and done the sequels anyway. So Pixar begrudgingly did those sequels because they'd rather at least try to do a good job then let Disney create something soulless, and here we are. Pixar is trapped in an unhappy marriage with Disney because they don't want Disney to take full custody of the kids.

I was willing to give it a chance despite what was being said and my original thoughts. I'm super glad I did, it was overall a pretty good movie in my opinion. Yes, it's predictable, but stories often are if you know the tropes and basic plot structure formulas (especially if you know the specific pixar formula) so imo its less about tropes and more about how they're executed. I'd say this movie does a great job of that. Every single thing they set up paid off in the end, even things that you'd never have guessed. The character dynamics were really cool and super cute, and I think the message of learning what you want matters is super important for people to learn as I'm sure plenty of people like myself feel like Ember who believe that it doesnt

I'm the odd one out. I really liked this story & the character designs. Wade being a tight-wad about the tickets, makes sense to me, it shows that love can work between people of different backgrounds but doesn't magically fix structural-racism. Wade is from a privlaged race/class, while Ember is from a disenfranchised group. The fact Wade, although with pure intentions, didn't just magically understand her or her peoples plight, like her father having "not to code" piping, is becasue the city never was truly built for Fire-people in the first place--- unlike the other Elements. That adds depth to this film to me. Wade from the jump is interested in Ember, but that doesn't mean he's gonna be able to understand her or her people's history at all, or not quickly at least. Side note: Wade said he tasted gasoline or motor-oil in the areas where the damn was leaking. Was someone breaking the damn on purpose, trying to destroy the Fire community, a hate-crime? And this movie works well, if like Zootopia you understand, that these worlds/characters aren't any one-on-one representations of any specific real-world marginalized groups. Cool original movie. It deserves much better.

it is a good story, and it presents well when you take away the element lens of it and see it as an actual minority family, however my issue is that it is a race allegory of a fictional world instead of it just being in a world actually more similar to ours that actually has races or something of the like, not actual “elements” that will physically have differences with each other and can harm each other simply by being in contact with one another. as i said before, the story itself was perfect and admirable, just the comedy of where that story is. is it really so wrong to refuse someone made of fire from coming into a shop knowing that if they bump into something, your products will burn up?

Lore wise it makes no sense because of the existence of Spider-Man in itself is far more complex than what they portrayed in ATSV. They essentially dumbed down the lore for the sake of what exactly? And people had the nerve to call Elemental cliche and unstructured? Honestly what a way to take the power through responsibility trope and turning this into an utter mess. Don’t get me started on how a rookie like Miles outsmarted thousands of so called “genius” spider men/women with years and years, decades of experience during the escape. I actually really related to that scene because, as a child of immigrants, I could relate to having my family in the foreground of my thoughts even during very personal moments. A lot of issues I’ve seen people have seem to come from a place of not relating to the immigrant story, which is completely fair. And that’s on top of the dialogue, animation, and writing problems. A big problem with Elemental's art style is it's gotten more and more into the "beanmouth" art style we saw in Luca and Turning Red. That's why everyone looks like a blob; it's all rounded edges, noodle appendages and basic body shapes. Also I find the worldbuilding very confusing. How was Element City created? Only the Earth elementals are tangible, everyone else is intangible. You should not be able to grasp solid matter when you are living fire, water or air/clouds. Why do the characters wear clothes when they have nothing to cover up? They have no skin or nerves so they should not be able to feel pain. See? It raises too many questions the movie is not going to answer; Because it can't.

I’m getting tired of people ignoring the massive decline Pixar has been on for a LONG time. Everyone says it without even realizing it. A bad movie by Pixar will be reviewed as “not Pixar’s best work, but it looked nice” when any other studio wouldn’t get away with it. They haven’t released a great, Pixar-tier movie since Soul, which is far too long ago. They’ve been riding off their nearly perfect reputation of industry changing movies for the last 5+ years. It’s like people just won’t talk about it because they’re so used to giving them the benefit of the doubt. It’s crazy to say, but Pixar may actually be the worst animation studio now. Whereas other 3D animated films are mostly “meh”, Pixar is responsible for recent movies that are blatantly bad. Crazy world we live in.

I cried kind of a lot during this movie, especially during the moments Ember had with her dad, I can relate to their daughter father relationship, it made me think of the good memories I had with my dad. Pixar is now the example of “having neat looking effects won’t carry the movie alone”. They might have good Loki g animation, but is that really the best people can remark on for Disney animated movies? They’re just allowed to get away with uninteresting and cliche stories with bland and predictable characters as long as the textures look realistic and the settings are grand and huge.

i thought the movie was okay, but i do agree with having a slightly harder time connecting with the characters, and the balancing of the family drama + romance left the film feeling rushed and unsatisfying by the end. that scene you talk about with ember suddenly thinking about her dad is the one i go back to when i think about the pacing. it was just jarringly quick how she switched up on it, i feel like the scene of them touching just needed more time to breathe. ember getting frustrated with herself for her flaws and being a 'bad daughter' was really touching though. i dont hate generational trauma storylines!

I actually really loved the film. I still think that there's a lot of flaws that this film has, but I still ended up rating it 5 stars on letterboxd because I was able to connect with it as the child of Asian immigrants. To me, Elemental isn't about the romance between Wade and Ember. Elemental is about Ember and her relationship to her family and to her culture. The scene you thought was jarring, with Ember lashing out at Wade, had me in tears because it was almost verbatim something I shouted at a friend over ten years ago about why they'll never understand why I couldn't stand up to my parents back then. Wade and his growing relationship with Ember is just a catalyst for her to grow. He's her manic pixie dream guy. He's the catalyst for her to connect with other people and face the truths about herself that she keeps hidden away. So yeah, the blobby designs are hit or miss, the pacing may be messy, and some characters can be cut out of the film entirely and change nothing, but ultimately, Elemental is an immigrant story that really did have me being the only person crying in the theatre. It was hard to watch this film and not think about all the things my parents did and all they gave up to come over here. The way it was all handled makes me 100% confident that a rewatch would elicit the same reaction out of me. I went into the film not expecting much, then becoming pleasantly surprised, but then completely and utterly overwhelmed when I saw how much Ember’s life matched my own. While I was never expected to take over a family shop, I was expected to excel in ways I don’t think me or my parents truly anticipated. While I have never fallen in love, I was transformed by the people I met and found a voice through them the same way Ember is changed by Wade and pushed to advocate for herself

I completely agree with what you’re saying! At first I was skeptical about the movie because the advertising was bad and I always heard about people saying they didn’t like it, but when I actually sat down to watch it it had me balling my eyes out at multiple moments in the film because I related to hard to the emotions ember was going through. Especially in the scene where she tells her father that she doesn’t want to run the shop, how she feels she couldn’t finish his dream, and when he tells her that she was his dream. That scene was so hard to watch especially since I’ve heard my father say it to me all my whole life. Embers whole situation just felt so personal to me since I’m going to college soon and I’ve felt like I have to pick a major that will let me be able to do what my parents couldn’t instead of what I’m truly passionate about. All this just made me wonder why so many people where hating on the film when it was probably one of the only movies I’ve seen hit so close to home in my life. It’s just so sad the bad rap the movie got just because some people found it hard to relate to the immigrant storyline and only focused on the animation and character design. :/

Honestly, I really loved this movie. I loved the visuals, I loved the music, and I loved to story. I did feel attached to the characters and I felt the romantic connection. But, that might’ve been because I was probably the target audience. I really related with Ember and I really felt those emotions through the movie. For others, they might not have felt that chemistry but I most certainly did. I guess my only gripe was when Ember turned on Wade immediately- I’ve been where she was and I’d say it take a couple more reminders and feelings of guilt before running away from a relationship that you’re immensely passionate about. I am also a little iffy with Wade’s character introduction. I’m not one to shame someone for being emotional all the time but when he came in (I didn’t watch any of the trailers before watching), I thought he was a comedic side character who cries all the time. But as the story went on, I really liked him! He was sweet and his ability to over-feel his emotions mixed well with the closed off Ember. They’re literal opposites but they complete each other. But again, I think I really loved the movie because I saw a story similar to mine on the screen. It really touched my heart. I think the relatability of a movie like this is what makes it or breaks it. This movie isn’t for everyone and that’s okay.

I gotta be honest. I really hope they decide to make some kind of Disney Channel spin off or sequel series to this. I just saw this movie, and while recent Pixar movies have been okay to me, I have not had this much love for a Pixar story since the golden years of Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, and Finding Nemo. I'm not even joking. I truly view this movie in the same light as those movies. You'd be surprised at how much I'm a sucker for animated love stories, which are my favorite kind of animated movies, and while what they did in this movie is cliche, it felt like something you'd never expect from a Pixar film. I've never really seen them handle romance in a similar fashion as the main Disney studio does with their movies, but wow, did the romance in this movie blow me away to the point i would really love to see a continuation of the story to see they're relationship grow. They could even set the series within the months before they even have to leave Element City, but after seeing this movie I would just love to see these characters again.

I haven’t seen a movie with this type of typical story that we’ve seen over 100 times In a while. It sound stupid as hell now that I’m typing it, but I guess that’s what I felt. I don’t know why Pixar has been making a lot of “safe” movies lately. Turing red, light year, onward, and now elemental. All of those movies felt very safe moving too make with no real “real” message that they wanted to discuss. Ill still keep supporting them so that can keep producing orignal content. Overall I’ll rate elemental a 6/10. Still an average movie from Pixar yet again, but this one feels like there some heart behind it. Even though the story was extremely generic.

It was too derivative of "Zootopia". It continues to use the same story premise that so many other Disney animated films have. It rehashes the familiar premise of a male or female protagonist going against family or community expectations by not confirming to them but instead rebelling against them and branching out to be their own person by reaching their own goals and desires. In other words you don't have to be a slave to conformity. Things can change and you can be your own person. We see this over and over again in films like "Coco" "Moana" "Red" "Mulan" and so on and it is definitely repeated here.

I watched the film yesterday with a cousin. Here's why it might not top my recommendation list unless you're seeking to burn away some time: On the plus side, aspects of the musical score, the intriguing world-building, and the artistic direction struck a chord, albeit not mind-blowing when compared to masterpieces like Across the Spider-Verse or other Pixar films. A highlight for me was the heartwarming relationship between Ember and her father. As an immigrant, I found that to be the most relatable of the film's themes, which echo the deep respect and gratitude we often feel towards our parents for their sacrifices. However, the film's other elements (no pun intended) left me wanting. The plot felt lackluster and even cringe-inducing at times. There were humorous snippets and bits of charm in some of the romantic scenes during the Second Act, but the Third Act and Climax of the love story had me face-palming in embarrassment. The film also failed to make me care for any of its characters deeply, apart from Ember's father and occasionally, Ember herself. The movie stumbles in its attempt to juggle numerous narrative threads within a limited runtime, resulting in a mediocre execution of all. It strains to generate a "West Side Story" vibe between Ember and Wade but falls short of igniting (ha!) any genuine interest in their relationship. Wade, as a lead character, was uninspired, reduced to a monotonous figure whose most defining feature was a worn-out trope-his tendency to cry as he was made of water. His redeeming moments were far and few, notably when he discussed his complex relationship with his father and during his sincere confrontation with Ember regarding her fears. Simultaneously, the film broaches the subject of the expectations thrust upon immigrant children by their well-intentioned parents and the potential clash with their personal desires. This could have been a compelling message if supported by tangible conflict. The sole reason Ember feels torn between her father's aspirations and her own is due to her reluctance to communicate her desires until the film's climax-this felt so unbelievably dumb to me. I would have been more engaged if Ember had an earnest dialogue with her father from the very beginning, justifying her ambitions as equally valuable and honoring her cultural roots. There'd be a genuine conflict then, which would have moved the story in a far better way to get the viewer invested. If you've got hours to spare for light entertainment, particularly with family, Elementals may serve the purpose. Otherwise, I'd suggest waiting until it streams online if your interest is only lukewarm.

Especially since the target audience was for young people and children, I was not expecting something very unique or complex. I like how they gave all the elements their own kind of culture and 'place', and my goodness the animation was beautiful. Also, coming from someone who's almost as emotional as Wade, I thought Ember and Wade's relationship was adorable. 😅 I will say though that Pixar is getting more and more like Disney, but honestly, I kinda saw it coming, though it doesn't make it any less dissapointing. :/

The movie was good. I liked it and if I can make a movie, then I'll have room to complain.

you don't need to have to be able to make a movie to have an opinion, wether negative or positive, about a movie.

I thought based on the poster that the animation would be horrendous, but it honestly has a pretty cool look. What sucks though is there is too much going on for you to even appreciate the individual styles for each element type. It's nauseating to look at. Watching the trailer I actually thought maybe the romance would be the best part because of that rom/com vibe and also because they each has such soothing voices, rooting for them!

I honestly think a bunch of love and care was put into this movie, especially after watching all the extras the moment they released. I've watched this movie 27 times the past 12 days, and honestly I think this movie is great, we obviously don't have the same opinion but to agree to disagree I'll say that you do raise some good points but I do feel you were a bit nitpicky and a lot of what you said rubbed off of me the wrong way.

ive heard a lot of interesting reactions, ranging from "well its better than I expected, but not great", to "its cute. Not Pixar's best, obviously, but cute", I havnt actually heard a negative review yet so this should be interesting. 4:45 I heard about the third act misunderstanding trope. Sounds like it wasnt really necessary for this movie, or at least, wasnt done that well. 6:46 "felt like a waste of time", I dont think there's really a worse thing a film can be. A really bad film can be terrible in every way, but wont feel like a waste of time just because its so laughably bad. But this, slots right in the middle, isnt good enough to feel like a meaningful experience, not bad enough to either.

It is one of my favourite PIXAR films. The music score is more background on a television but on my Honor Pad 8 with its 8 speakers the sound was enhanced. I ended up watching the whole film on that and right tbrough the end credits. I thought it was humourous and sentimental. It is beautiful and emotional.

What I did appreciate about this movie was its obvious connection to the experience of immigration. I could feel the sentiment and emotion behind the writing. Even if the writing itself was mediocre, I felt like it was coming straight from the heart of someone.

Pixar needs to shift its focus back to story, because their animation will always look great. The last Pixar movie I enjoyed was Soul and that’s mostly because it felt like a unique & compelling film. I’m hoping the 2nd Inside Out can build upon the interesting premise of the first one and get Pixar back on track.

From the very first trailers this movie felt just completely played out to me… Pixar has been doing the “like our world but not quite the same” thing for so long now that they seem to be running out of ideas for how to spin it. A good example is monsters inc. Think about how creative and fun that idea is! The world of monsters who live in kids closets and harvest scream energy to power a weird city monster metropolis, all of the unique ways they take advantage of that concept. Vs now. We’re getting movies like elemental and onward. Movies that try this same exact formula after it’s been done again and again by Pixar (and Disney.) By this point the formula is just hollow

I would love to see a behind the scenes of how they did the characters, it was a meh story but the execution was okay, the relationship with Ember and Wade is really good and you can see the feelings grow. Overall I enjoyed the movie, not the best from Pixar, but not the worst. I hate how Pixar has been treated by Disney the last few years, and the marketing for this movie sucked.
