sometimes i find myself writing too much about the problem making it sound like I'm trying to make the reader feel sorry for me instead of focusing more on my solution so this really helps, thank you!

Knowing the rules completely changes your focus when approaching an essay like this. Even as a 9th grader, with a lot of time before I’m writing my common app, this same idea of knowing the criteria and your audience are really helpful for essay writing in general!

Thank you! I’ve been working really hard on an essay that requires me to talk about how my experiences have prepared me for a certain thing, but I kept feeling as if the essay was trying to guilt trip the readers rather than explain what I gained from the experiences, so hopefully this will help turn things around. Fingers crossed!

The key part in every endevor is knowing your audience. You have great skill of analyzing what AOs want to see. It even reflects on your videos' structure that you're straight to the point, concise, and give very valuable info without basic redundant application infos. As first-gen low-income member applying this year, I deeply appreciate your efforts, my virtual brother.

I feel like this is good advice for any situation! When applying for a job people like to hear what physical actions you have taken like work experience. I know someone who is currently excelling in her career in the tech field because she knows what she is talking about and acts like she knows what she is talking about 😄 Love your channel just found it today (: a hidden gem for people applying to colleges!!!

I wish I had watched this video back when I was applying to colleges, but I guess it didn't exist back then xD. Thank you for sharing your tips with others, though, I think it's wonderful. And besides writing a great essay, maybe there's something about the mindset of a person who would write an essay like the one you describe that we can all learn from. Thanks again! ;)

Thank you so much for helping us out Kevin! I have been watching a lot of your videos recently and your tips are very helpful. I am writing about my grandparents moving to America and how it inspires me to work hard and persevere because they faced many problems and were able to overcome those obstacles, however I am not sure if that topic is good or not but I was just wondering what you thought. Hey Kevin, I just stumbled upon your channel (the emo commonapp essay vid haha), and I'm lovin the vibe! You mentioned in that vid that your CommonApp should at least mention how you'd contribute to the campus, which is interesting since typically I've read that it's typically more of the focus in the "Why Us?" essay; I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on that. And of course, thanks for all the content you're putting out - I'm sure I'll be binge watching all of it over the next couple days

From what I've read most people emphasize that in some form you should talk about what you'd bring to the campus, though I might be wrong so that's why I'm asking lol

What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? (Be as specific as possible) show a journey, an obstacle, a decision, a realization or growth
