March 2024 Note: This is still a popular tutorial with lots of good information, but I don't recommend this workflow anymore (specifically: Convert Objects to Lines). There is a more recent update to this method you can find here:
• Elevations and Section...
You can also try the Clip Cube method laid out here:
• Fastest Way to do TV &...
See which one is better for your workflow.
Original Description: Working through taking a 3D model and laying out elevation and section views in Vectorworks. After a lot of research and trial and error of laying out plates with viewports for each view and detail, we found the files to be too processor intensive and inefficient. This technique lets you make a leaner, meaner file, though it's more work for revisions and changes.
This tutorial uses VW 2018, but any version from 2016 forward should work with the same techniques.

Hi Evan, Just like everyone else is saying, this is a great video. Thanks for making it. I keep coming back to remind myself of things I forget. I also work in Film/TV in London and have spent most of 9 years using SketchUp but I've realised VW is the next step up to producing better drawings and visuals. Looking forward to watching the rest of your tutorials. Thanks again.

Hi Evan, this is really great, both informative and a pleasure to watch. Thank you so much! I am new to Vectorworks and hit hurdles every little step of the way. There is a lot to uptake. Selfishly I was saddened to click on your channel only to find this one publish:( Here’s to hoping you find time for more! Best, J

Thanks Josh! There are more tutorials up on the channel now - though they are aimed at beginners to 3D.

You said that you didn't know why Vectorworks wouldn't allow you to put section viewports on a design layer? Well, it's because once you take a section of a building/model, you are most likely doing that for the sake of presentation, so it will automatically generate a 'sheet layer' for you...as I was taught...sheet layers are for printing, and design layers are for designing. Once you have your section viewport on a sheet layer you can change it's scale, size, etc etc etc. Another feature you might want to take advantage of would be to use the Renderworks Camera option, and take 'pictures' of your scene from fixed positions to mount on your sheet layers...so that even if you change your original design, in the design layer...your 'camera shot' won't change, it will automatically update the new changes from the design layer in the 'new picture' once you tell it to re-render. It will also allow you to use all kinds of different photo options, just like a real camera ;) (BTW, I've been using Vectorworks for about 8 yrs now...and LOVE the software)...have fun with it, and good luck!

Rory Hassett it would still be super useful to have these viewports on design layers. Being able to work in plan view and update these viewports as needed. You can sort of do it but you have to setup circular references to another file.

Evan, great way to get some solid looking sections. I always need to draw over my sections to clean them up and this seem like a great "base drawing". Question, I'm only getting lines from the background objects - nothing from the cut plane . Any thoughts on why? VW 2021 sp2

Off the top of my head: select the design layer viewport. In Object info Pallet hit Advanced Properties. First tab there controls your depth of view. Is that determined range there set correctly? I often use Infinity.

So with the "convert copy to lines" workflow, do those objects have to be remade when the set is changed?

Hi! Yes, and that is the downfall of this technique. This video is pretty old and I used Copy to lines when big shows with lots of viewport was choking smaller computers, but that is less of a concern now (better computers and smaller shows). So the preferred method is to make viewport for all views and then they will all update when you update the 3d. This inspires me to make an updated video on elevations that shows this.

I just ran across this video and found it extremely helpful creating elevations of whole sets and sets that are parallel to the proscenium. However, most live theatre design has set pieces (e.g. walls) that are at an angle. Can you suggest a workflow in those instances? Do you have a tutorial or can you suggest one that details a work flow? Thanks much for any guidance. And again, great video.

@TerryPrice Thank you very much. When I do angled sets, every unit or wall is broken down into logical hybrid symbols. I copy all of these onto a new hidden layer called ELEVATIONS where I rotate them straight on and space them out. You can line them up vertically or horizontally, whatever you prefer - on big shows I use saved views to help me navigate the layer. Leave space around each one and build your viewports from these. Update the Symbol in any layer and they sync. Keep this layer hidden unless your specifically making tweaks to it. This is my usual setup on any show, straight or angled. Great idea for a tutorial!
