Yes but that doesn't mean lack of budget shouldn't be considered. Companies like EA are corrupted by greed but not having enough money means you are limited to time, staff and quality, which is even worse for a smaller studio working on bigger projects like an open world RPG who need as much of those 3 factors as it can get including money

@@jackals1876 Iack of a budget is no excuse for poor systems, poor balancing or poor combat. Greedfall is a great example of taking a tiny budget, and creating a good playable rpg with lots of rewarding things in it. PB doesnt understand this, at all. For instance, they have been making games for like 30 years and they havent improved their combat, AT ALL

Idk if I'm only one but I think Risen 1 had best combat system in all PB games, I have no clue why they dropped this combat system in Risen 2 and beyond :/

Seriously??? I played all PB games: gothic 1-3, risen 1-3, elex 1-2. And I can tell - Elex 2 has the most blunt, meaningful and boring dialogues compared to all mentioned games. I skipped most of them, they are too wordy, they don't really tell a good story. For example Crony tasks. Just try to skip the dialogues there and tell me if you see a lack of story explanation or have a feeling you missed something.

@@fareloz I skipped not many Dialogse in the game because the humor is spot on.... I wonder if that's a localised thing I can see that the jokes get lost in the translation from German. Then again we Germans don't have humor , or so they say... All in all I liked the story the characters. Only the fetch quests were very annoying to be honest.

Agree. Combat and graphics are dogshit compared to Elden Rings, or any other souls-gae for that matter. But imho if you adapt to the clunky combatsystem of Piranha games, you can have a great experience. I for myself know, that objectively these games are 5/10 at best, but I still get addicted to them, once I start playing them. I don't know why...

I am sorry, but the even Elex 1 broke down when it came to the world. You would think a game made by a small team at least had some coherency, but even that wasn't possible for some reason. There was one quest where you had to find a murderer and a main aspect of that quest was that the suspects were the warriors of the berserkers because they all had the same test where it was about cultivating these World Hearts of the Berserkers. One of the suspects has a second quest (independent of the murder quest) and you want to know what the quest is about: "I, someone who passed the test as a warrior, don't know how to cultivate World Hearts. After all, I am just a warrior." Something along those lines. Even in a small team, they weren't able to keep their world building straight for two quests that involved the same person. How can anyone say the world is done well when there are these amateur mistakes?

@@Modie like I said it's not perfect but getting hung up on little things like that, which I understand I do that too sometimes, doesn't mean everything is shit and the way ranton is acting in this video is simply immature probably for comedic effect but still I enjoy the idea of technology, science and magic Co existing with modern technologies and futuristic elements. And then on top if that we see left overs of the old world. I enjoy the scenery more than the quests tbh that's why I'll enjoy elex 2 as well

@@Mosherkopter Is it a little thing though when one of the main selling points is the world? Having an idea for a world is one thing, but if you don't actually go through with it it destroys the immersion. Meaningful choices? What choices are actually meaningful in this game? Even the morality system made no sense. You had to be cold to make your brother understand that the evil final boss is actually evil and not a super being that should be treated like a god, but if you are cold, then you don't have a choice but to follow the same evil end boss in the end and see it as a god. These might be small things, but they are indicative of the larger problem: That no actual care went into the world building. A small team should have the advantage that you don't have to direct many people and therefore the inner consistency SHOULD be better compared to productions with 100s of people. But they weren't even able to achieve that. So what is there? The game is bad in the technical aspect, because the team was small (even though this doesn't need to be the case) and the game was bad when it came to inner consistency and worldbuilding despite the team being small. It's a failure through and through.

I enjoyed it regardless tho, liked the exploration and growing my character the idea was well enough but I enjoy playing a bad guy so I didnt notice what you pointed out. It's fine if you didn't like it, I did and there's waaaay worse games out there. Which of course doesn't devalue the problems this one has I mean some people like the shit show that is Netflix Witcher and some people don't. Just like with this game

Kingdom come deliverance is a really underrated game. The combat takes a bit to get use to but after you do its quite fun! I played it on PC with a carry weight mod because when i first started i raided a bandit fort and couldn't carry everything i looted!

@dorael_ the combat system is quite fine. It is in no way broken. Though my experience could be different as I played with controller on my PC. And its still an underrated game even though the rating has actually changed since the last time i saw it. Though hardly any reviews mention the combat.

Still are. Played gothic 1 and 2 last year for the first time and the sheer ambition on display with those games have made them age like a fine wine, much better than a lot of rpgs from that time like morrowind. Even the combat in those games were fine, its just the controls that weird people out with them. PBs problem is that they havent been able to do really good worldbuilding since gothic 2. Theyve streamlined shit too much which makes the worlds they create feel more artificial. Ill definetly play elex 2 at some point because like a lot of people say this developer scratches an itch and i get that since ive gotten hooked by gothic 2, but i doubt itll be better than that game.

@@Taireyn They've been making the same type of game for years before Demon Souls even existed. They're a low budget developer team with a lot of passion for their games and fans. Elden Ring is a lifeless BOTW clone that uses more copy & paste than a mmo. I'm not a fan of the Gothic games (too janky) but I respect the devs hard work.

Valheim is another good example. Sometimes its not only the budget but the talent (or lack of) thats the treshold. Elex world is fun to explore, though, but the rest.. meh.

I wouldn't think too much about it. Just don't play it and spare yourself the stress.

You have light attack and heavy one, you know exactly how far your weapons would reach and it's up to you to hit your shot. What 50/50 chance are you talking about? all of their budget was wasted on those random af CGI cutscenes, and even those are shit. i love gothic 2 to death but my god did they fall off with every single game that came after gothic 2. they even tried to mimic gothic 2 with risen and it failed.

Why? Because game star doesn't value an entire game on one single aspect? We are just gonna act like every Gothic and risen game wasn't super clunky especially in its combat? It's no excuse but going into it and expecting elden rings level of combat is just... I don't know eventually its kind of your own fault and clearly not a game for you. It's like if you'd be buying every ubisoft release and then complain about open world elements with question marks to work through

When I think about GameStar I think of Blizzard, PC-Games, Substance and Tech over Gameplay, German Games, sometimes Sci Fi sometimes Fantasy, maybe Simulators. I don’t think about Nintendo, Mobile or Console Games. The Game still looks like shit but that’s not my point and I have basically no clue cause I never played it. Maybe it is fun to play.

I agree that Gothic 1/2 and Risen 1 were good games. Gothic 3 was sort of a mixed bag. Too ambitious, too little time. But it can be fun. Everything after Risen 1 isn't worth playing at all, in my opinion. And Elex 2 proves this point again.

@@mikeryan1043 Oh I stopped after giving Risen 3 a try. It was honestly pretty bad. I didn't even like Risen 1 that much, but it was still pretty fun. Gothic 3 is not nearly as good as 1 and 2, but after the community patches, I still liked it a lot.

@@Jug_or_not Yeah, I played Elex 1. Wouldn't do it again. And I don't think I will ever play a PB games again unless they drastically change something. As for Risen 1, for me it has the best combat system of all their games. You can't swim, which I don't like. And I feel like the humor in the dialogue from G1-3 is gone. Otherwise it's really good, imo. Gothic 1 and 2 were great 👍🏼

@@mikeryan1043 Oh yeah same; I probably won't be buying any of their games again. I only saw Elex gameplay and thought it looked terrible. I don't think they will do a good game again. I hated how they removed the humor in Risen. The game lost a lot of charm and it was a sign of how they tried to appeal to a wide English-speaking audience. They quit their own style and now try to do modern RPGs but they honestly don't seem to have the skill to do so. Anyways there are lots of good games out there to play instead and you can always go back to Gothic 1 and 2

The amount of people who worked on the game doesn't really matter though, if the game is bad it's bad that's it.

Smh.. Before they do anything at all, the base game (base feature of the game) should be developed and refined to a T, before working on dozens of other aspects of the game. Combat is essential.. It's what you do throughout the entire game. It was probably the number one complaint people had of the first game.. Far less than 30 people can create a far better combat system.. They could've brought on a single person or two just for combat alone. I was interested in the sequel.. but I don't want to support this.

Yes, I feel you with the Elden Ring rating. I think the game is GREAT but I do not get the Open World aspect of the game (Yet - maybe that changes).

I don't think it's a masterpiece(I'd put Nioh 2 and Surge 2 above it because I like their combat more) but it definitely deserves many of the praise and acclaim it's got. I think it's just not for you because it is just well made objectively in many aspects in what makes a game enjoyable 🤷🏽‍♂️

@The Nameless Hero I find the map design and creature design comment to be very subjective. Especially since anyone with an eye can tell that even if the aesthetic is not to your taste (Dark Fantasy), the actual design of all the creatures and map are all varied and unique even though the design themselves are reused for some of the more similar enemies. You can call it "boring" but that's your taste, and not an actual criticism of the map and creature design which is obviously well made. Graphics I would say is indeed lackluster, but not the aesthetic and visual design they chose. And I find it funny you bring up graphics and design when it comes to a game being overrated when it seems like you'll die on a hill for Elex and the two games both look way more bland than any Fromsoft game. Not to mention the mechanics of these enemies themselves, which is less of a subjective point of view- The enemies are generally interesting in the way they fight. Gameplay doesn't get stale because although the player itself cannot suddenly switch their gameplay mid combo, many enemies present different opportunities and challenges for the player to overcome. And why does the game not having a quicksave a con? That's comparing apples and oranges- You wouldn't want something that just pauses Tetris so you can think up of your next move. The game is meant to be challenging and repetition in order to master it is part of it's game design. All of that would be lost if you could just quicksave in the middle of a fight, or while you're dangerously close to dying on the way to a "bonfire". And I never said I didn't find PB games to not be enjoyable, in fact I quite like the characters and the world of Elex because I really dig settings that mix magic and technology. But you're the one insisting that anyone who doesn't love PB is on crack so I'm just going to ignore that from now because I'm sure nothing could change your mind lmao For bugs, I give you that. I was one of the unlucky people to experience bugs in my playthrough but having more to offer than Elden Ring? I disagree. Elex is an RPG. It's going to have more choices because it's an RPG. Elden Ring is an action game with RPG mechanics and systems. You'll have more choices in a CYOA book than a Folk Tale after all. But when it comes to polish, depth in the gameplay, and how you actually play and respond to the open world? Elden Ring knocks it out of the park. You just like RPGs more than action games and that's fine, but to blindly call it overrated because of how adrenaline pumped you are for PB is insane to me 🤷🏿‍♂️

You mean soul when you can notice that the team of 30 people didn't even talk to one another when creating the rules of the world and everyone makes them up as they go along and write quests? Like in Elex 1 where one quest tells you that berserker warriors need to learn how to cultivate plants and in the next quest a berserker warrior tells you that he has no idea how to do exactly that with the explanation "that he is just a warrior". Yeah, totally the soul I can feel there. I guess, the soul is somewhere behind the plot holes in the writing as well.

well Elex 1 had a fantastic combat system, the only problem was that you had to change a lot of settings in order to get a good combat system (settings the game didnt even tell you existed) sadly if you just play the game without actually looking deeper into the settings (which nobody does normally) it plays like absolute trash i wanted to throw my pc out of the window the first 10 hours i played it was that frustrating

Ubisoft titles are painfully mediocre and average. But they function mechanically enough for them to find an audience and to basically be games where you can have brainless enjoyment. They fail at being creative or fresh but they work for the people that aren't really looking for anything to shock them and just want a game to sit down and pretty much kill an afternoon. You could argue the same for Piranha Bytes titles but even ubisoft at their worst is still better than a Piranha Bytes title. It's the difference between Fast Food Drive Thru Meals vs School Cafeteria food that fell on the floor as you were walking to your table.

I mean, combat is not evertyhing. Especially not in a RPG. Just look at Morrowind or Witcher 1. Heck even Bethesda Games don't have good combat. Skyrim has the best combat of every TES title and that tells something. This "review" right here was also a rant from beginning. He just hated the game for the sake of hating. Yeah the combat is bad. Faces of the characters too. But the game has other qualities and there are enough people that like that type of game Piranha Bytes produces.

You guys are bandwagoning because this video is negative towards PB, but back in the day they made two of the best RPGs ever made. Gothic 2's world is incredibly well designed, full of densely packed, thoughtfully placed content with lots of verticality. Don't judge Gothic by what you see of Elex.

The fact it took me 20 hours to find out damage/armor were flat numbers and thats why I was doing 0 damage to most ennemies

The combat was a bit bunk and they wasted their time with the voice acting, but it was certainly a much better RPG than most RPGs these days. I enjoyed it. Haven't played the 2nd one though.
