111: Organic farmer Eliot Coleman joins Dave to discuss why the idea that chemicals are needed to grow food has only ever served chemical companies, and how industrial regenerative agriculture is doubling down on that claim today, through their anti-organic and anti-tillage campaigns.
Eliot Coleman is an author, market gardener, and educator. His work on the USDA study in the late 1970's, "Report and Recommendations on Organic Farming" helped lead to the formation of the National Organic Program, setting the very standards that are being ignored by corporate interests today.

We believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront.

Eliot is definitely a treasure of our time. Have all his books and videos of Gardening naturally which was my first introduction to gardening in 1993, been hooked ever since. I also acquired many of his excellently designed tools as soon as they became available at Johnnys. I was most fortunate to have met Eliot at his Four Seasons Farm back in 1998, for me it was equivalent to meeting one the Beatles! :)

wow, I did not know what was going on behinde the scenes! I will be more alert now. I buy most of my vegetables from local organic farmers - and I can taste the difference!

Agreed,and so many nay- sayers ,say their is no difference...in vegetables and fruits. Meat and poultry definitely taste better,, especially pork.

Agree about the articles on rototilling, NOFA had them back in the 70's. Also I sure Rodale had them. Mr Coleman has helped me become an organic farmer in the 70's. People thought I was crazy.

Eliot Coleman is a jewel no one appreciates him enough im afraid. He is the MOST IMPORTANT Real Organic farmer alive. We need to learn from him as much as we can before it’s too late. God bless him

I would love to hear a conversation between these two gentleman and Charles Dowding in the UK. Mr. Dowding's "no dig" methods involve just adding organic material (compost) to the surface and not bothering to till it in. Otherwise, his system is the same (no chemicals, no fertilizers, all compost can be made on site, etc.

Hi Jason. I think that Eliot knows Charles. One of my favorite books from Eliot's library is by Denzial O'Brian, an intensive market gardener who practices no-till raised beds. She also avoids all animal manures, choosing instead to compost plants. She is a very compelling farmer.

I love listening to Elliot Coleman. Yes, he's consistently authoritative and informative. But equally, he's such an accomplished, affirmative soul, it's a delight and uplifting just to listen to him talk. thank you Eliot and thank you Real Organic Project.

What he represents is a new way of thinking by reimagining the future of this planet through connecting like-minded, so at the end we can have a quorum senses that enables a dismissal of the system you now spend so much energy fighting. You are doing admirable job but instead of wasting time fighting, let’s unite and focus on creating a new wold. Let the old system collapse on its own. It will. Because it’s time.

I live in the middle of central Ohio corn country. It saddens me to see these big time farmers working the huge fields with their brand new equipment. It's flat in this region so anyplace where someone can plant a corn field, they plant it. Any last remaining tree blocks are being bulldozed and burned so they can make more money. They all plant GMO crops using chemical sprays. I just wish they would change over to organic farming but that will never happen.

Agreed ,and the same thing is happening here on the praries, Canada.This generation isn't taught how farmers planted rows of trees to prevent soil erosion during the droughts of the 1930's and left blocks of bush for pature.

I honestly think Real Organig Project is doing far more harm than good… If ROP were to switch over into full certification instead of an add on band-aide, then I think ROP could become the gold standard that consumers reach for… As it is, you are dragging the current bunch of lazy and corrupt certifiers along with you. That gives them zero incentive to do better. ROP does nothing to discourage these current certifiers, zero competition… And as long as that is the case, they will continue to be happy certifying hydroponic and all the rest of the faux-organic growers… In this way, ROP stalls progress and diverts energy and attention away from the problem, thus allowing all that fake organic to gain a stronger foot-hold in the market (setting precedence). That precedence will come back to bite us should these issues end up being settled by the courts… It won’t matter how fake they are if we have already given them a seat at the table. As much as I hate what the faux organic side is doing, I cannot in good conscience support ROP… Sorry… You are part of the problem because you encourage it to remain and fester… Please become part of the solution… Certify only real organic and deny certification for and and all faux-organic and hydro… Become the gold standard that others want to become. Become the high bar that farmers strive to attain, and that customers trust and reach for. The only certification that means instant customer base. That’s the only way to win… Be the best, and customers will vote with their dollars. Those are the only votes that really count… You got to edge the out of their own game… An add-on lable doesn’t do that.
