Thanks for the dual updates from Elon's recent Starship talk and from Tokyo. Some of SpaceX's ambitions are probably exaggerated, but if they even achieve a fraction of what they're promising, we're still all in for an awesome future!

Musk is a dreamer. Just seems to me American capitalism has been avoiding dream development, the pursuit of dreams. Good dreams are, in my opinion, essential to Progress. My thinking is that when Starships start moving 100 ton payloads into space en route to Mars or not!!, near-Earth space industry will kick-in. There'll begin to occur an in-space "Boomtown" phenomenon. This activity of near-Earth industry may vastly dwarf whatever activity that may occur on Mars.

2:30 Clearly Elon's companies are developing some of this stuff. Expect there to be something like a Cybertruck on Mars. He's got The Boring Company for doing underground excavation. He even tossed out the idea for Hyperloop. Hoping someone else will pick up on it and make it a reality before he heads off to the Red Planet.

Fun update from Japan. I'm excited for humanity to travel to Mars. However the reality of humans settling on Mars is that they would quickly start loosing bone density and muscle mass. This will make them physically weaker than us on earth. Since Mars has 1/6 earth's gravity. A person gets weaker because muscles need less force/strength to work and the bones don't need to be as thick/strong in a low gravity environment. This will also have terrible effects on the heart. Effects would likely be even greater on those born on Mars. Over time Humans/Martians on Mars might become a bit taller, but as mentioned with thinner/less dense/ bones and weaker muscles. People that live on on Mars long enough might not be able to ever vist earth. Exercise is not enough to stop the drastic negative effects of low gravity on the body. I really hope scientists develop real solutions to prevent too much physical change. Im sure information Nasa has learned studying the effects of zero G on astronauts will be helpful.

How about a starship that lands on the moon. Then gets laid down onto its side. The engines are removed and shipped back to earth. Simple earth (moon) moving rovers scrape and push material around and then over the starship burying it. Repeat this process and link them together to get the first starship lunar base. Then a door could be cut in the bottom of the laying on its side starship and tunnels excavated into the moon creating a large underground habitat. I kinda feel like as this all progresses the mantra will become prove it’s doable on the moon first then improve it and do it on mars. Alternately, you could do the same thing without laying it on its side. It would just take more time and material to bury the bottom half of starship. All the scraping and moving surface regolith would also give the benefit of clearing a landing pad. Sure would be nice to have the ability to move starships around once landed.

20 years might be within Musk's Life time. He might live to see it and even visit Muskville. However, self sustaining requires a lot of people and stuff. What must also be considered is attrition and turnover. Colonists will suffer accidents, illnesses caused by the mars environment and the environment of the enclosed habitats. Mental health may be more a problem than physical health. With one million you will need a police force and if they are mostly Americans then their will be murders, lots of them. Some may even die of old age, or infant mortality. Children will suffer from thin and brittle bones in the low gravity. Just to keep a core fit active number of colonists will mean a constant shuttle every two years of hundreds of Starships. Good luck Muskvilleites.

Personally, I think Mars is the wrong target. Asteroids! Ceres, and the other asteroids. Mars is a one-way trip. Take a metal-rich asteroid, and turn it into a human habitat.

Update ;•) but still with chemical propulsion. Elon can make his Raptor engines ten times better than now, and they're still only good for LEO, or at max to our Moon and back again. They can be used to push cargo to Mars and anywhere else. But chemical rockets are useless for manned space flight beyond our Moon. We'll await the Moonbase. That must be done first. Any bit further will need a ship with a reactor onboard. That kind of Starship will probably never land on a planet anymore, though it could still land and launch with fission drive. A plasma drive is yet more powerfull. The reactor could also feed a real powerfull ion drive. That can enable real deep space interplanetary exploration. I heard Elon favour ion drives once. To do anything meaningfull, they just need much more electricity than solar panels can give to them. And they're fast; but not strong enough for landing or launching a Starship. We will see several different distinguished types of Starship. They are already thinking about this at SpaceX. I'd love to see if they come to the same conclusions as me. 🚀🏴‍☠️🎸
