Joe Rogan spoke with Elon Musk yesterday and asked him what it ultimately was that led him to buy Twitter. He said that he felt that Twitter was having a corrosive impact on civilization at the time he bought it, and that the conditions surrounding the San Francisco Twitter offices proved that to him.
Rogan and Musk talk about the proponents of the "Mind Virus" that was making its way around San Francisco could lead to the end of civilization. Rogan refers to people who believe in this as a "death cult." Elon agrees, calling them "extinctionists."

Still too low. It needs to be progressive - and whoever is the richest needs to pay 101% tax over the bracket limit. It needs to be literally impossible to earn more then the maximum to discourage predatory capitalism, and for the most intense greed to be punished with effective loss.

There needs to be some threshold at which the marginal tax rate is 100%. Meaning, an absolute maximum amount of income that a person can "earn" in a year, and if they go any higher than that additional income gets taken away in taxes.

One of San Francisco's budgetary problems is giving tech-lords (and other corporations, especially in finance) big tax breaks as an incentive to locate there. This comes after a half-century of forcing out light industry, warehousing, and a once-thriving waterfront in favor of offices, luxury condos and tourists.

When I joined Twitter years before it was "X", I could subscribe to Mother Jones, the Nation Magazine and other progressive publications and read Twitter like a newspaper of headlines and full articles at the click of a Hyperlink. @@mr88nyc You may be right. It's definitely not publicly traded, as of 2022, but I believe there's still a board, and stock held by employees, which can't be traded like normal stocks (RSU, IIRC?). I may be mistaken about some of the ins and outs of how it works, but I'm *pretty* dang sure he's still legally beholden to those who own the percentage of the company he doesn't.

I haven’t been over there in a few years (I’m in Oakland) but I used to work in the TL with formerly homeless people as a case manager and I don’t recall it being a “zombie apocalypse.” Yeah, you’re gonna see some homeless people and plenty of strange people like are found in all large cities, but I don’t recall it being like Escape From New York or anything. If anything it’s a lot calmer and less populated than when I lived in SF in the mid 80s as a kid. But it’s all foreign and weird to someone like Musk and so he must imagine that ALL of those people he can’t relate to are homeless and on drugs. Perception is a helluva thing.

I remember when SF was affordable and someone could work PT and afford an apartment. It’s become a nightmare because of the tech revolution coming in and driving the prices up. Unfortunately SF is on a peninsula and there just isn’t room to expand and build more housing, so it’s a perfect storm to create an indigent, poor population who barely survive. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it would be 1000x worse if the city didn’t run low income housing for formerly homeless people in former Single Room Occupancy Hotels. More than anything, the way SF is structured makes those homeless people far more visible than they would be in other cities since the cheapest areas and the SRO hotels are all downtown mixed in with the tourist areas. In other cities, the poorest neighborhoods would be more segregated and the homeless wouldn’t be so visible.
