Elton’s October 31st 1978 appearance on the BBC TV music revue showed him in a relaxed mood and wardrobe as he performed solo at the Steinway. This primarily instrumental song (Elton chants “Life isn’t everything” at the end) peaked at #4 in the UK when it was issued as the second single from his 12th studio album, A Single Man. It become his highest-charting single in his home country between 1977-1982.

I love this version of Song For Guy. He performed this before the single release. I love that there is no percussion. That was added to the song later. To me, this is the true heartfelt song. And yes, he fluffed his notes! Makes it even more special xx

The depth of Elton's ability on the piano cannot be measured.....this song which most people are not familiar with shows the range of his humanity.....the sadness he conveys through his hands on the keys is palpable.....

This is absolutely masterful. Hearing him play a real piano is magical compared to the synthesized, digital sound of his current pianos. I wish he'd go back to analog sound.

@@PositivelyPam , yes , after getting permission from the boy's mother, Elton named the song for him. He wrote the song at home on a Sunday, and said he was obsessing about dying. As he was writing it, he imagined he could see himself rising up over himself and watching himself die. 😳 The next day he discovered that the office boy had been killed in a motorbike accident around the same time he been writing the song. When he was recording the song, he was very emotional, and kept crying. However he didn't want the tape rewound, and would just keep picking up where he left off as far as the tape went. Due to how fragile he was that day, those involved in the recording were worried that the tape was going to run out before he finally got the song recorded, but he did eventually get through it, just in the nick of time!

Yes! Written for Guy Burchett. Died at 17 in a motorcycle accident. He was a courier for Elton’s Rocket Records. In the U.S I believe. Beautiful piece of music.

Beautiful song but always makes me think of my dear brother in law who took his own life at age 24. It's over 40years ago but I miss him as much today as I did all those years ago, maybe more. He was a wonderful human being, too good for this world.

@@justinstuart8382 Me too. I have a PSR E373 and i play this piece very often, cause I love it. Since the keyb has a nice piano sound, it is not comparable to the natural piano sound. And my performace playing this piece is not the same, but i have joy playing this song. Maybe I will experience this piece someday playing it on a real piano ... Sorry for my English and best regards from Poland.

Ruby Badilla He is considered one of the greatest pianists ever. He started playing at 4, got accepted into the London royal music academy at age 8, as well being administered into a GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM.
