My son plays tennis, and I always tell him there is a very fine line between winning and losing. In fact there is a very fine line between playing great, and playing like crap. Simple things like making too many unforced errors, and not taking your opportunities can cost you dearly. Emma is finding herself on the wrong side of the line at the moment, but she's playing pretty good regardless. Her situation can change quickly. Her ranking is artificially high, as are the expectations, but she is a good player. She's young and will improve.

Radacanu's ranking is artificially high because of the U.S. Open win. In reality she is somewhere in the 50-100 range. She has 3-4 hard years ahead on the WTA if she wants to fulfil her potential to be a top 20 or even top 10 player. Aside from the obvious pressure to do well she has one additional thing to contend with that no one mentions. No matter how well she does it will be hard for her to experience the same joy and satisfaction that came with the U.S. Open. I mean how do you top that! It is going to be a challenge for her to keep herself motivated.

Nowhere near top 100. British no 3 in reality as Watson and Dart both better players. By all accounts she played as well as she could in this match...as good as USO. Her good is not near good enough. She beat players off form at USO plus Fernandes fair and square. That is it. She is 100-200 rank player. That translates to losing most of her matches.

Siniakova might not rank high in singles but she won at least 1 GS in doubles last year so she's not a nobody. I feel that Emma should play in some smaller tournaments to regain her confidence, test out strategies in safer waters bc I'm sure the pressure isn't helping her mentally on the court. Otherwise, she needs to have patience and be able to combat the expectations to go at her own pace at this point.

Her level right now is the same as someone ranking between 50th-70th. Siniakova ranks 53rd. Emma has nothing special in her game, mediocre serve, forehand, backhand. She doesn’t have pace in her shots either. In rallies you could see Siniakova’s hits are faster so Emma was often under pressure. I hope the reason she lost was her fitness was not 100% like you said. Other than that I don’t know what else she can do to improve her game. Both Emma and Leylah have been 'figured out' pretty quick by the rest of the field which continues to show how deep it is. At this point, if you don't capitalize on your chance when you get it you may not get another chance. Its that competitive. The days of dynasties where a handful of ladies dominated is so far over...but it would be nice to get a rivalry or two going instead of the non stop rotating door of winners (especially with Barty gone).

excuse me, but Leylah successfully defended her title at Monterey. It is Emma that needs to put her head together. All that celebrity status has exacted a toll on her tennis. Her achievement at the US Open last year was awesome. But she allowed all that came after in terms of her celebrity status to get to her head. She's no Bouchard, obviously, but I am sure she does not want to be a one-slam wonder at all. So she should improve her fitness, train harder than ever, add new weapons to her repertoire, learn to be more tactically adept, and become more mentally tough by not expecting easy wins.

@@anthonydecastro6938 It is funny you mentioned Bouchard, actually I think there are quite a lot of similarities between the two of them (not only in their game style but in particular with regards to how marketable the two of them are and all the media attention and expectations that come with it). As a side note, Bouchard achieved quite a lot in 2014 when she got to number 5 in the world. On that year she won a title on clay, she got to the Quarter Finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and she got to the final at Wimbledon. We can even speculated that had Bouchard played a young and inexperienced opponent in the finals, she could have won Wimbledon. But instead she played an incredible in form Petra Kivitova who had by the way already won Wimbledon in a previous occasion. I just hope that Emma and Leylah will continue developing their game and will be both playing and winning finals of big tournaments again very soon. For those of us who have been following the sport for a long time, we’ve seen this story before. The more Raducanu epically fails as she has post US open, the more difficult it will become for her to mentally overcome. Every loss becomes a greater mental hurdle to climb. I get the feeling that she isn’t well liked by a lot of the girls who likely take great pleasure in taking her down. That just makes a tough job even more difficult. She was in fact only a game away from winning the match as was the case in Indian Wells. Her talents were never in any doubt as was evident in the shots she played during that match, it's only her match fitness and inexperience that prevented her from winning, but that will be sorted out the more tournaments she plays.

Realistically speaking number 40-80 is probably Emma's true ranking so the fact that she's playing close matches with players from this range shouldn't be surprising. I do think she should've won this match (and similar matches in general) however I wouldn't focus so much on the rankings since US Open's run distorts her situation too much. It's her first full WTA season and I think physically/ mentally she is not there yet, especially for 3 sets matches. The US Open title is really a little bit a Trojan horse for her. It for sure brought her fame, money but at the same time the hype seems to overwhelm her a little bit. She is just 19 years old and people's expectation are way too high for her atm.

Emma is not the same dominating aggressive player she was at the U.S. Open. Now she makes lots of UE, hits the ball back at her opponent in the middle of the court just to setup a finishing shot back that she has to try to return on the run and it usually a short floater. She now serves down the T and the returner just moves to hit it back with lots of pace to her! In addition, Emma hitting the ball with more topspin and slower pace. Her matches for the most part are all long, 3 set matches too! Emma seems to be running out of juice to fight back!

@@JustMe-jy5qk yes, and the crystal ball does not look good! a very easy draw at the US Open. a fluke win. lucky she has signed all her deals and done her photo shoots...not many more will becoming when they realize that she will pretty much be an average player for the rest of her career. She really has no weapons that places her above players ranked 100-300 in the world. @@anlace3447 the dumbest critic is a fluke win. Since 1881,nobody has fluked it until emma came along? If it's now so difficult for her to win her matches, was it a fluke at being ranked 150 to win over those ranked higher than her at USO. Bencic Olympic champ, sakkari now in top 10, Rogers home fav not to mention she had to beat 3 qualifying rounds, all not dropping a set. In March 2021 she was still a full time student, ranked 361. 12 mths later now, everyone expects her to clean up every tournament. Go chk on yr fav women player, how did they fare in their 1st year wta tour? Emma has set different records as a newcomer. Most critics don't even know her unprecedented path. How many matches did barty played to win her 1st major? How long did Venus take to do the same? How long did Serena take to win her next Slam? Everyone has their own paths. Novak wasn't great until he was 24. Anyway, time will tell. I bet yr Crystal ball is faulty

@@theawebster1505 she's already very successful and multi millionaire at 19. She can walk away fr tennis now and hv at least usd10 million to pursue her education and another career. Success isn't just being on the tennis court. If so, barty won't just walk away at only 25 yrs old. With at least 12-15 yrs ahead of her, the world is Emma's to call the shots. Whether in the tennis court or off court, her personality, intelligence and multicultural background are her asset too. Many older players hvnt even achieved what she has in 6 months. She's free to choose her career paths. Whatever it is, she will excel. Cos she did excel both in her exams and tennis tho she wasn't even a full time pro then. Emma Raducanu has got to play doubles to work on match experience. The first set was awesome by Raducanu. Raducanu went after the ball and hit with conviction. The second and third, there were nerves or hesitation. Would like to see Raducanu keep up with the aggressive play. Raducanu needs to build on her game other than aggressive baseline play. Moving forward and hit those midcourt swinging volleys.

@guts gen Yes, but the only way to get stronger is to push one's stamina. Stamina is not improved by preserving. What we don't want are injuries. I would say at the Grand Slams, singles only; especially, if there's a huge chance to go into later rounds and the 2nd week. Or, do the Hopman Cup, World Team Tennis, etc. Other players only do a few doubles events, but didn't really help. It takes awhile to build up one's game. Look at Martina Hingis, she played singles and doubles. In the Hingis era, women's tennis was starting to get deeper. Thanks to the prize money increase in the early rounds which I hope continues as it takes money to get better. Maybe team up with Osaka to play doubles? What I ultimately want is for Emma to test her shots and to not rely on her bread and butter shots.

Emma is still adjusting to the WTA tour, she will need to get much fitter as her energy levels seem to drop, Emma has all the ability, she missed that forehand frustratingly which would have put her 3-0 ahead in the final set,and she would probably have gone on to win, also she got in to a position of serving at 5-3 so she can do it, People keep forgeting this is her first time in miami, she has still to play on clay, and she has still not played one single match on Wimbledons centre court yet, Her opponent played great true but this is a match that got away from Emma.

@@MinorVoices Not really. Tennis academies have been churning out 7 feet giants for quite a few time, regardless of technique or skill. That's why you have 3 old men still being two heads ahead of everyone else, or why Alcaraz - a player who can also run and hit the ball hard, like Zverev, Rublev, Sinner, Medvedev, and the rest, but who can also play a little bit of tennis - seems an outstanding marvel. Serena Williams may have been a player more accomplished than Nadal, Djokovic or Federer, but her winning days are over - as it should be the case in men's tennis, if there was any talent besides the Big 3.
