Great coaching for one-handers: my backhand was purposely about 1.5 yrs delayed than forehand; Tried many styles of forehand to find the best for my own! Since this June , I started my one-hand backhand practices starting with the self-feed , which is exactly as what you are showing today: it is working perfectly and feel kind of effortless power and consistence ; since this month, in the game , I can attack , for the 1st time , using one-hand backhand!

This is great. How about shoulder high backhands? Any way to make these feel less weak? Or is it better to slice these?

Very well analysed and explained. My analogy would be, imagine pulling a catapult with your non dominant hand and releasing it just before hitting the ball. Similar to your breaking the hand cuffs.

I'm one handed backhand and that's exactly my difficulty, lack of power in my strokes. Then I tend to use slices, which is not so bad,but I want to put spin on it and pace. I will try and use your advice on my next training session. Thanks a lot.

You may be the tennis whisperer. Time will tell. The backhand keys for me - I have to drop the racquet head below my hand and below the ball level at least a little, strike the ball below the equator, and whip the racquet head through, up, and over the ball (just like the forehand) to hit an effective backhand drive.

I kinda sorta knew this instinctively but could not pull it off on slices.

Steve on forehand the rule is project body into ball as you uncoil. I see the uncoil briliant BTW! But as you stabilize with opposing arms is a great foundation for power. Can the advanced player also use more aggressive footwork for example? Moving here I'd catch a guy playing with partner and from a low height he'd absolutely clobber the one handed backhand. Just wondering where all that power came from. Incredible timing yup, two opposing arms for stability correct, but there was another factor that made for blinding racquet speed (resultant high power shot). Great video blessed if I know how he hit it so hard so accurately to baseline consistently. I'd say a major league backhand for certain. Great video Steve, truly! Any thoughts what else he might have perfected? This was a thing of beauty to watch he favoured b/h over f/h. Everytime! 🙂

Hi. Thanks for the kind words. The answer to your question is probably timing. But, I hate the word timing. I mean what does it mean? I'm every sentence that I've heard the word timing uttered, it could have been replaced with... Magic.. I'll make a video asap on my take on timing, and how you can find the sound, feel and power of Good magic.....I mean.... Timing 🤔😂

@@oneminutetennis sounds great. Not sure if you taught this but a wonderful aid for timing backhands (and proper footwork is very simple... Point the butt of your racquet right at the ball. You soon pick up on your footwork and swing this way. A great one hander backhand is the prettiest shot in the game IMHO. EASY power hit in the sweetspot yet so concealed passing shots down the line can totally fool the best. Stanimal and Dimitrov have such potent backhanders and they sizzle with power. Maybe in my next tennis life? I'm short so low backhands are easier for me than others. Also perhaps the most injury free shot and a wicked hooking ability. Gregor Dimitrov particularly good at this and good luck guessing where its going! Stanimal I can predict about 50% of the time. Dimitrov is a nightmare read, not convinced he knows till he hits it. Saving my pennies for a ball machine, that will be an enormous boost to my game. If I had to choose I think Dimitrov hits his backhand the fattest. Wicked shot... 👋👏

Hi. Pointing the butt of the racket is great advice. But if you try to point it for only a fraction of a second then the power is much greater. Good luck with the ball machine. I don't know where you live, but check out for used machines.... Many people sell great machines second hand.

@@oneminutetennis ok makes sense, hit the ball out front and contact ball as it is rising not dropping making it lighter to hit. Thanks Steve good tip👍I'm in British Columbia Canada snow still on courts yet but hoping for a break in weather for at least a serve practice. All high fives here as Canada has just won the ATP Cup for first time ever 🙂

Does the handcuff idea have applicability to the backhand slice as well?
@oneminutetennis2 жыл бұрын
Very much.... On Monday I'll post a video for the slice.. It includes the handcuff idea. But also another idea that I have not seen explained anywhere to add real power to the slice. It's great that your enjoying the site. www.oneminutetennis.com

A clever idea. But where’s the hip drive?
@oneminutetennis2 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion. But I only make videos on one single part of the stroke at one time. Otherwise I think the point is lost. Do you see what I mean? It's great that your enjoying the site. www.oneminutetennis.com

@@oneminutetennis Yes, I mention this bc in my experience it was learning the hip drive that really changed the level of power I can hit with.

It is a fundamental part of the stroke. We will cover it. I promise. Kind regards

The biggest predictor of success or failure for my one handed backhand is having my feet set with dominant foot over the other in time before the shot. If I'm shuffling my feet as a result of being late, the shot is substandard

Another good lesson but moving your left arm back has been around for awhile. One thing I noticed you're doing is hitting pretty much straight legged. You need to have a little more Bend in your back knee. Keep the lessons coming
@oneminutetennis2 жыл бұрын
Hi glen. I think the most important thing is how the left arm is moved back. Is it separated from the right arm by the body? Or is it pushed away? It makes a huge difference to the stroke. And sorry for me straight, non, moving legs. I'm recovering, very slowly, from a herniated disc. My bad footwork is now almost zero. 😃 If you have a cure for this... I'd love to know... My surgeon has his own ideas, but what does he know? 🤔😉😀😀😀 It's great that your enjoying the site. www.oneminutetennis.com
