Just a hone in #8 for low compression? Was that before or after it was pulled out of the ocean? It just needs a little WD40 and she'll fire up, orrrrr maybe a complete rebuild with oversized pistons. Great teardown ray! Thanks for the shoutout!

I had to quit watching when you started pulling the main caps,intead of the rod caps first,to check the bearings. Any one that doesn't know how to work on a early GM Small block(or big block,for that matter) should send it to someone that can. In my 50yrs of wrenching on engines varying from the AVDS1790t Tank engines to 2 cycle engines,Chevy small blocks are the easiest. Unsubbed

As a seventy year old, coming from the sixties and seventies, I have torn down many 283's, 327's 409's 427's oh and 350's plus other engines. I have seen much worse brought back to be some of the best street rods of the day. The heads, the block, and possibly even the crank are all very salvagable. Piston, rings, lifters, pushrods, timing set, and cam all need to be replaced. That motor is well worth the effort to rebuild it. It all comes down to time and money. Hook that motor up to a well build Muncie and you have a tire melting, flame throwing beast. Yes I am old school and proud of it. :D

Totally rebuildable. Bore the cylinders, rework that cam and the heads, lifters and push rods reusable. I've seen worse that ran for over 200k miles afterwards. Just depends on how much you want to spend, and if you know where a machine shop that will redo it is. 4 bolt main 350 is worth a lot to some folks. Just would take a few grand to bring it back. Cletus Mc would take it and send it off to Texas Speed and make a hotrod engine out of it, but he has the dough...lol. LONG time since I've seen a 350 torn down. Thanks for the vid of this one. The "rust " on the cam and lifters is nothing to worry about,the lifters can be burped,and the cam is not harmed by surface rust. As long as the lifters aren't "cupped",and the cam lobes are smooth,it can be used . All you had to do was spray PB BLASTER into the cylinders,wait a bit then roll it over. Mic the cylinders....if it's less than 0.40 oversize it can be checked for cracks and used .

I have one just like that one, except it's a zero mile crate engine with aluminum heads (345 HP) that I bought over 20 years ago for a project that I was (and still, sort of) working on. I took it all apart to make sure that all the internals were still ok, since it had been sitting so long. Everything is fine, so one day I'll put it back together again. I have several engines sitting around that some day, before I die, I may get back together. One engine I have sitting on a shelf (in pieces) is a 1963 Corvette 327 engine (matching numbers) with double hump heads, again, waiting to become whole. Needless to say, I have a very understanding wife.

Yes unless its your motor even if you don't think its worth saving, you should always keep parts in order caps with connecting rods and so on as if it was going back together My reason for that it could have been his dads project he worked with his son on even though it doesn't have value to you it might be worth it to the owner to spend the money to repair it. . If i had a 350 me and my dad worked on, i would want to keep it. The motor i can fix my dads gone.

Thanks for this video. It has been a long time sense I have taken an engine apart , probably in the ‘60’s . As you were going through the tear down I was remembering doing the same over seas ,( Vietnam), and we did the same , decide what was salvageable and what was not . Folks would be surprised to see what happens inside a motor under running conditions . Just a small crack or pin hole in the wrong place and the motor is gone . Stay safe have fun .

The only thing going for it is being a 4 bolt main. It is nice seeing old school stuff being dealt with still. As for the bearings I would think even aftermarket mfrs would stamp a date into the bearings. A weird wear pattern though as you noted and I would tend to agree with it being a backyard fix. A great video as always Ray...funny...I just watched Erics 4 cylinder diesel teardown he posted today. And both were great as always🙂

Several things a machine shop will need to do. 1. Before anything else, measure the bores and the main journals to see if machining will fix the issues., 2. If number 1 is o.k. then clean and check the block for cracks., 3. Price the repairs for the customer to see if they just want to get a crate engine instead of spending money on this. This is what happens when you leave an engine out in the weather. What a shame.

Might need sleeves if pitted to deep to fix with boring 30 over. Otherwise that block is rebuild-able. Just needs a trip to a machine shop. My block looked worse then this. Had a bore with a chunk missing on the bottom. Had a good machinist look it over. He sad no problem. Just a bit of grinding to smooth it out and stop cracking from a sharp corner. We take more then that out to make a stroker. Bored the block 28 over to match the pistons. It has run sweet for years. Far cry from when we tore it down and found bits of rings overlapped in the groves. It was running, using a quart of oil to make ten miles, but it ran. 350s are a tough motor!

That's what I was thinking. There's nothing there all that concerning except the milkshake. If that's from a headgasket or something similar it would just be a matter of throwing money at it. If it's the block itself then it's scrap iron...

80-85 block and it’s still in production actually you can buy a new one from any gm dealer out of the chevrolet performance (formerly gmpp) catalog and factory4 bolt blocks are nothing special aftermarket or main cap change on a 2 bolt block are better 1/2 (vs 7/16 on gm 4 bolt main) splayed bolts go into a stronger area of the block

Im from europe, lets face it american v8 are far better made than european. American has one short timing chain. European like audi, has an insane labyrinth of chains and tensioners and plastic guides. And it fails prematurely. My opinion.
@MichaelRoloff-yr7iq
@MichaelRoloff-yr7iq Ай бұрын
Unfortunately, as is often the case with complex matters, this is only part of the truth! V8 engines of US American provenance were built practically unchanged for a long time, because taxation and efficiency were no or hardly an issue. European V8, on the other hand, are more highly developed and conceptually superior, but also more demanding in terms of operation and maintenance. The mentioned valve train topics, tensioner chains, etc. are a bad hanger for this comparison, because you would have to fairly compare the work done by the engines! Specific and also related to efficiency.

Just hone it a little to get the rust out, polish up the cam and crank, clean up the pistons, get new bearings, rings and a gasket set, oh get original style rockers, new oil pump, clean up the heads and put her back together. I have done all that back in the day with engines that looked worse than that one. Thanks for sharing, it brought back some memories for me. I almost forgot, get new timing chain and gears.

Great video! And Eric at I_Do_Cars would be proud. and Yep this engine is totally reusable. May need to be sleeved, but with how rare the 4 bolt main blocks are it is definitely worth doing so. Gonna need a line hone for the mains. I would get a new crank, cam, lifters and pistons for this one. I would send the whole thing to a machine shop to have the heads done as well.
