Sad day for many of us who spent summers at Canterbury watching one of the greatest spin bowlers. There will never be another like Deadly. Caught Knott bowled Underwood, I remember that on my scorecard more times than I can remember. So sad for Derek’s family. Take care.

This man is killer. Hunts like an eagle. What a bowling. Absolute pleasure

Great privilege to be a Kent member from 1979 to 82 and saw the great man for those years with Alan knott behind the stumps. He was a genius, middle pace and could turn the ball a yard, an extraordinary talent.

Wonderful bowler best spinner since Jim Laker no one since in his league. Had so much ability and talent. Deadly Derek true English legend

I learned from Underwood . You dont need great arcing deliveries . Just move the ball an inch or two and push it through a bit more. The faster the delivery the harder it is to spin the ball. Good length , off stump , Aspinning seamer. I played County U18 and won the Cup and League. Best spin figures 5 - 15....and a pat on the back from the County Seniors.

What a wonderful bowler. And was Deadly. Would take wickets and tie down an end.

I enjoyed watching Underwood & D'Oliveira in tandem closing down on a good wicket. Basil is remembered as a batsman, but under Illingworth he bowled more than 30 overs in an innings in test cricket.

The ball that clean bowled GR Vishwanath at Delhi was superb , it just licked top of the off stump. 1972 series against India , England won the first test at Delhi .

That Doug Walters dismissal...the way the ball jumps! Unplayable delivery!

Which one? The 1968 or 1972 dismissal?

they were the days when most of the cricketers were well behaved and not overpaid prima donnas. great commentators and umpires too. if only we could turn back the clock. and ps i remember well as a 19yo out here in australia listening in bed to that 1968 test, when australia collapsed late after a weather break on a very wet wicket.
@graemestarkey7524 Жыл бұрын
Utter rubbish. Players are easily as well behaved. Plenty of stuff went by in the fictional 'good old days' that was ignored. Umpires worldwide are consistently better now and there are many fine commentators.

Amazing that it took so long to put a camera at each end. If it's not at the bowler's end you see nothing.
@sirbuftontufton58462 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The funny thing is they often did have a camera at each end, but only used the second one for slow motion replays of wickets, not ball by ball. Strange really.

What sort of speed were his deliveries?
@sirbuftontufton58462 жыл бұрын
Best guess around 70mph

Notice how either zero or just one English teammate congratulates Underwood on each wicket. Not sure he was the most popular man in the dressing room.

Deadly Derek was deadly mainly because of uncovered pitches.

That Greg chappel wicket was outside the line.He would have been not out with DRS

Go contact the ICC. They might strike that one off for you. After all, it's only fifty years ago ...
@sirbuftontufton58462 жыл бұрын
By and large, umpires were conservative in those days. DRS gives modern bowlers way more LBWs. If Underwood (or any contemporary spinner) had DRS, their stats would be even better.
