I like how each individual unit is more easily noticeable

Only HRE and Abbisids get them as a regular unit in their Siege Workshop. French also get a special Royal version, but only if they choose that landmark. Everyone else has to make do with Springalds and/or Bombards. I'd say only the Chinese Bombards can tangle effectively vrs Culverns. Most other Bombards and even French Cannons struggle due to only 10 range and poor hp for the cost.

Yea I'm not a fan of the pop caps I think... I'm still mashing on some AoE2... I own AoE4, but I'm still not sure if I like it. It's pretty dumb how they have the pop cap setup. If you can afford the more expensive units, buy them? Why noob cap everything? I've also noticed a lot of the maps have waaaay too many chokepoints. I'm a AoE2 black forest fan, but you can just cut through the trees with onager and open up more fronts. Some of these maps are as noob as it gets. This one is a good map. Other than that, the game doesn't look terrible, but AoE2 DE is still superior at this point. AoE1 was in roman age, AoE2 was feudalization basically. AoE3 was industrial age. AoE4 tried to remake the best of the series, which I think was a mistake when the DE of an older game is so much better than their newest game. I think they should've started off remaking AoE1 and went from there. In my opinion, trying to remaked AoE2 is too big of a mountain to climb.

Doesn't help that, even though it looks good, every game mechanic is dumbed down from its predecessor (homing arrows for example) and the UI/keybinds are shite. It looks great on the surface, but the depth is lacking. That and it's an unwillingness to adapt

@@ReuterL It's just that less mechanics bring less depth in the long run. No highground bonus, 100% hits, houses that don't block pathing are all things that mean less interaction. At least AoE4 does add an additional interaction with the hideable terrain, but it loses many others. If there were more new ones it wouldn't be much of an issue, but there aren't any others. Same goes for UI/Keybinds. There are a lot of standards over the years and AoE4 misses a lot of them such as a patrol option. It is bringing less to the table than before, which is a pity. I like the game, don't get me wrong, but more because it is new and shiny.

@@weerwolf If AoE2 was created after AoE4 with new graphics, people would point out all the stuff changed and removed and say AoE2 was dumbed down. AoE4 is just a different game.

To be honnest I really dislike AoE IV buildings style. They remind me a lot the buildings in Cossacks 3, they don't seem alive. Maybe some little banners being blown by the wind from here and there would be enough to improve this. Overall, the graphics don't feel like what I expected AoE IV would look like when I started waiting for it 10 years ago. I though it would be looking a lot better than AoE III (2007 version) and today it ends up looking actually a lot worse in my opinion. To conclude, I wouldn't say the game looks good for 2021 standards and certainly not assuming it is the sequel to AoE III. The sounds however are indeed very qualitative !

@@JSparo-TotalWarMachinima Yeah you're right, it looks like AoE4 is like a compromise of AoE3 and AoE2 (for example the gold and stone are like Aoe3 but are mined like in AoE2). If they did Definitive Edition of AoE2 they could make a new AoE more close to AoE2 and it would be great. But then again I myself don't know what they would have to do to make a great succesor to AoE2, because it is as a strategy game so perfectly well rounded and has everything you would wish for in a medieval, balanced strategy game ,covered.

AoE 2 veterans seem so blinded by their one game they forget just how much the franchise has tried different things with each entry. AoE 3 isn't like AoE 2, nor is AoM and nor is AoE Online. Ironically, despite AoE 4 getting broadly positive reviews across the board (for an overall score of 82 on Metacritic), the most frequent criticism of it by reviewers is that it didn't take big risks.

I think aoe4 highlights the flaws of aoe2. Aoe2 at the pro scene is more about execution than strategy. You follow a strict build order, go for a certain unit type and try to snowball an advantage. Killing villagers is often easy to do if you get the opportunity, usually ending the game. I think aoe4 makes you focus much more on your army, and where and when to use it as well as getting to the proper composition. That said, it feels like aoe2 can be more action packed in the late game

Not enough time to set them up. Any Longbows using that ability are locked to that animation until it's finished, unless commanded to do something else. Which would waste the ability and put it on cooldown. It's one of those things you have to setup before a fight starts, usually. If the enemy is close enough to shoot at, it's too late.

When they are charging £8 for a DLC that consists of a couple of campaigns and 2 new nations, it is clear they are out of ideas. They don't want to mix things up and are just trying to milk the community's loyalty. On the other hand, I fully expect aoe4 to fail. I have not brought it, I hate the fact they pulled features such as the scenario editor, and I think some of the design decisions are bazaar. But if aoe4 does well, it has more potential to grow, change and thrive than aoe2, so I hope it can outlive aoe2 development.

Aoe2 was a masterpiece when it first came out but 20 years of improvement just cannot be ignored. People forget how much difference there is between aoe2:de and aoe2:aok. I suggest people that criticize this game to download age of kings demo and play it. I know there is a 20 years difference between the two, but still, aoe4 definetely released in a good state. It's not perfect, but it has a good enough base to improve.

Well, compared to what? Longbows have higher damage output than any other foot archer, except for the Chinese Zhuge Nu. (Which is nearly useless vrs armored targets) I think a key factor for effective fights with English is to always maintain the Network of Castles buff no matter where one is fighting. 25% increased attack speed, then 50% with the Imperial upgrade, super strong. Sadly, it's not exactly the 25% and 50% values as advertised, but it does make a big difference with ranged units. For some reason, it doesn't look like it helps melee units, oddly enough??? But yeah, I'd rather have Longbows in almost all cases, compared to other ranged infantry. Running away from fights is one of the only advantages that the others have. Longbows are at 1.12 tiles per second, compared to like 1.25 for others. Some of those can get speed buffs where LBs lack that option.

It's obvious that the people who nitpick this game for not being aoe2 never intended to give this game a chance. They can't accept something that is different, even if it introduces a lot of good new features.

Which health regen out of combat mechanic do you mean? The English landmark, or the French Royal Knights? Every other healing mechanic happens with and without combat. Like, healing from Religious units, the Longbow Set Up Camp ability, various other buildings like docks and certain upgraded structures. I personally miss some form of hp regen from garrisoned units. A couple of those building upgrades that give regen remind me of that and I enjoy it for sure. But yeah, I'd still like some slow form of hp regen or maybe pay for replenishment or something?

@@hybralisk There's an upgrade that lets units restore health when out of combat for a certain time.

@@notorioezz this is only true for French Royal Knights. No other unit auto regenerates in any way. You might be thinking of the Set Up Camp ability. That is a manually controlled ability that works regardless of combat state.

They are generic and uninspired. And really hard to distinguish from one another. This has a really bad UI design.

Hey bro I figured it out, select farm, hover over the mill, hold shift, then start left clicking, it will automatically place the farms around the mill. It actually works for any building, if you click one down while holding shift, you can just keep left clicking and it’ll start building more of that same building around where your cursor is

True but if you compare it too irl, there wasn't really a good defence against it till at least the 1500s for England anyways with the introduction of Star Forts for seige wise.

I think that's absolutely necessary if you give civs stuff like M@A in Age1. What else do you want to do? FIght them with Spearmen? I think it's good design. You can punish greedy players with early rushes and you can idle them a bit, but it won't win you the game immediately.

@@J0nNy4BfMe Range attacks in RTS is mechanically better than melee, this is a design choce that makes range strong and melee weak above and beyond that general inbalance. I guess we'll see how it shakes out over time but I think we'll see very little dark age play unless maps are changed slightly.

It's for some harrass options for certain civs. But if that's too strong (and heavy Dark Age play becomes meta), they would either need to nerf it, or give Dark Age options to all civs. Dark Age got a bit more interesting than other Age games, but it's still just a starting age

Archer micro is hardly the be all and end all of skill in RTS. Most RTS don't even have such a thing, including the most competitive of them all Starcraft. Meanwhile AoE 2 has zero unit abilities. AoE 4 has a fair number of them (not as many as Starcraft 2 or Red Alert 3, but a lot more than AoE 2). Is that not considered skill? Does it not require skill to use those well?

They are still missing 11

I like it as it is. For me the problem with such games like Warcraft and Starcraft (Warcraft a little less) with their one million skills, previsible maps, fixed strategies and glorification of the "micro" is that this is not strategy, just reflexes and speed thinking. Of course fast thinking must be a thng, given Chess for exemple, but having those fixed strats with focus on execution and micro is something I'll never accept as "strategy"; is more of a "moba" than a strategy game actually. And is just depressing seeing the AoE 2's comunity's badside talking so much shit just because the game is "too random", "too confusing" or "too macro"; randomness makes its part of battles, being no able to macro or not necessary means you can make decisions (in this case, not generally), and most of the confusion is just for them, the ones that always had the fixed strategies, not being able to pop out the same moves every game. I agree the game has many problems, mainly on balance; but man, there is not even 1 day since launch yet.

There are no cost for repair, so it is worth to have at least 7-8 vills to counter-repair for free.

From what I have seen, still have the same great things from AOE 2, early feudal rushes vs castle age, fast castling, booming, military heavy. Added that sacred sites make religious units more useful. Has a nice complex counter system like 2. Are there balance tweaks, sure, but AOE 2 has 20 years of balance tweaks.

Yeah you’re right unfortunately. The palisade and walls is at the heart of aoe2, and the reason why I personally didn’t enjoy aoe3 or most other rts.

They have modernized them, its called the Definitive Edition. They said AoE 4 would be it's own thing from the getgo, at no stage did they mention wanting to be close to AoE 2 in terms of gameplay. The incredibly assymetric civs give it it's idenitity.

Aoe4 sucks for people that love Aoe2. But overall is a good thing. They were doing the stupidiest things with the new civs. Now they are gonna put all the "creativity" on aoe4 and we still have the best game ever for us :D. Only thing thats bad is that they are all streaming aoe4 and not Aoe2 but i think thats gonna change pretty quickly

I disagree about this. If you like the aoe2 mechanics play aoe2. If aoe4 was just a copy of aoe2 it would also be criticized. I'm glad they tried new things, some of the changes are very cool and thoughtful but my biggest problem with the game is how confusing and clunky it is.
