I was asked to engrave several cans with the laser. I had to find the settings but finally got it worked out. 50mm/s at 100% for 3 passes seems to do it. My first burn inside the new enclosure. I still have to add the window, camera and ventilation to it before its done. Also, the parts list for the enclosure door is below. Your best prices will likely be at tractor supply or another hardware store.
For templates that I have made, check out my Etsy shop. I build files for projects and tools for laser engravers.

Below is the parts list for the hardware I used to build my enclosure. If you can get the pieces in smaller quantities, the price will be better. The pieces can be sourced at most hardware or tractor supply stores. The following are galvanized and high grade steel is not needed.
(4) - 5/16 X 3 J bolt- amzn.to/3zYgT5b
(4) - 5/16 nuts- amzn.to/3ST5jkj
(8) - 5/16 flat washers amzn.to/3Psy2d5

Another option for marking the cans but still using your laser would be to cut a stencil out of heavy card stock and then spray paint using the stencil. I've uses this method before on other projects, and it adds a cool rustic look if you lightly spray the paint.

Yea, I also have 12 inch tape that works but they asked for engraving.

@@TheClackShack Yeah, if they requested engraving then you're kind of stuck. Keep up the good work, man. I love your videos.

That shiny clean metal would pop if you wiped some Cold Gun Bluing liquid (Selenium Dioxide) such as Brownells Oxpho-blue. It'll also keep the bare metal from rusting.

If you take the lid off the ammo can, it will be much more level and better able to focus. Especially in the D1 10w.
@TheClackShack
@TheClackShack Жыл бұрын
It was focused ok, the middles have a high spot anyway. I split the difference and it worked. This burn doesn’t have much detail, just block letters.

The comgrow air assist has a shorter shield so it doesn’t catch like the XTool one. Not a bad idea but leaving them on doesn’t seem to hurt.

Did you try compound wax and a buffer? I did, one side of the can it worked and the other…not as good but better. I think part of it is the cans are slightly warped in the middle.

Nice I like how they came out. Is there a reason why you did not run a test grid on the ammo cans. Do you have or can you do a video on the Jig file setup on the computer? I understand the puzzle in the laser. Is there something different you do to set it up on the computer?
@TheClackShack
@TheClackShack Жыл бұрын
Yes, the ammo cans are for a wedding and most of the folks wouldn’t know what the grid was…. Lol. The simple answer is $15, that would require me to buy and extra ammo can and ruin it with a grid. I start low and walk it up until I get the desired effect. I made an extra $15 in this already cheap job by not using a grid. I only charge $15 per burn for these, the customer provided the cans. I set my return location to keep tolerances tight and not depend on limit switches. Yes, I built a framing file for the box. I do this to all my burns to avoid mistakes on placement.

You can dust on powder coat and than re-engrave it. That will melt the powder coat only where you engrave.

I keep seeing internet people say not to run diode lasers at 100% power, because it shortens the life of the laser. Do you find thats accurate? I've been watching your channel for a month now and I trust you more than random internet people.
@TheClackShack

I can't say for sure and don't have scientific way to test it but here is my opinion. XTool says that the laser will last for 10,000 hours (support.xtool.com/hc/en-us/articles/4405624562199-Pre-sales-knowledge-for-xTool-D1) that equates to 416.6 days of continual running. If you run your machine for 4 hours a day, that is 2,500 days of running. Assuming you run it 4 hours for 7 days a week, that means it will last for 6.8 years. Chances are, some other component will fail or you will purchase a new machine before you reach the life of the laser. Also, I make money by completing jobs, if jobs take longer, I loose money. I work as fast as I can and maximize my profit. Doing so, I can afford to replace the machine. Just my opinion.

The video makes it look pretty good before cleaning (maybe it’s not as good looking up close). If the post burn does looks good, what if you just gave it a couple coats of matte clear… leaving the “soot”. I know your done with these…. Just a hypothetical question that doesn’t require an answer. Interesting video.

The finish would likely fall off because the ash is not attached to the surface. I could have engraved, sprayed with cermark and engraved again but in this situation, I wasn’t asked to make them black. They wanted white letters but changed to just engraved.

I’ve been trying for 2 weeks to get my XTool D1 to work. Lightburn won’t find the laser and the cuts and layers section just says “waiting to connect”. The XTool software “creative space” will engrave but won’t “frame”. Makes it pretty useless since I can’t verify size and position if I can’t frame. Any ideas????????

Did you download and install the config file for the machine? Sounds like it could be a driver issue. If it isn't a Pro model, you may want to download and install laserbox basic just to see if maybe the usb driver isn't in the new software. Just my thoughts.
