Who is a native speaker? This question seems to confuse - and even upset - a lot of people. Being a native speaker does not mean you come from a particular country, like Canada or somewhere in the UK. Being a native speaker has to do with geography, your familiarity with local cultural references and idioms, and other factors. In this video, I hope to answer this question and clear up some of the confusion. Hey, Adam. Thank you for letting us know that you enunciate sentences. It's a good idea to enunciate when you teach at basic or intermediate levels, but when you teach at advanced levels, particularly advanced spoken English, it's better to let students be exposed to the way Canadians speak in their day-to-day interactions, or students will be shocked when they visit Canada! You could probably categorize your videos based on level. Thank you.

I am from Asia, so I’ll never be a native English speaker 😂 but I am a native Mandarin speaker 😅… but I can understand everything you said, I can understand you and your idea, when I express myself I want I can get my idea or concept across, that’s why I learn English. this is communication, this is the function of language. Languages connect people instead of differentiate us. And learning is so fun with multiple accents and slangs around the world, I’d like to be a multilingual ❤

Hi Adam! David from Costa Rica. What you explained in your video raises awareness about the so called "speaking like a native" motto. I appreciate that you emphasized the idea of how culture plays a relevant role when learning the dialect of a specific region. What most of us non-native english speakers who live in Latin America learn can be considered "standard English" So, thank you for clarifying that learning a language includes learning about the Culture. Fluency is the key. I liked this video a lot because to me, that's what we, as teacher should teach our students. To talk fluenty and not force them to pretend to be someone else or behave like someone else (when speaking, of course). I'm an English teacher who was born and who has lived in Colombia all my life and what you've said Adam on this video is simply awesome.

Fluency is the KEY. TO me, That's what WE, as teachers, should teach OUR STUDENTS. TO SPEAK fluently and NOT FORCE them to pretend to be someone else or to behave like someone else (when speaking, of course). - I hope you don't get upset my friend.

@@teacherv.osorio5038 Well, I'm glad you think that way pal, 'cause I didn't do it for the purpose of putting you down, I didn't mean to do that, I did it because I wanted to help you, I make mistakes too, like everybody else, it's just that I used to make mistakes and the people who helped me, corrected me and that's the way I learned and I thank them for correcting me and every time I see somerhing's wrong and I know what it is correct, well, I just say it, in this case, I typed it but what you typed in your text shows a lot of maturity on your part, well, glad I helped you my friend.

Natus is the root word for Native. In this case from the womb/Birth Heard English since the womb Congrats you are a Native English Speaker.

Great video Adam. I think it is good to learn not to take everything like somebody wants to offend us. Sometimes people assume that having an accent means mispronouncing, and it is not. All of us have accents in our native languages

I couldn't agree more , nice video. In my opinion that is the beauty of the English language different accents , idioms , expressions etc. For me the key is communication or in other words to get your message across. I am a native greek speaker from Greece and sometimes is hard for me to understand native greek speakers from Cyprus because they speak a little different and that is fine because it shows the uniqueness of the language. Yes, I totally agree! Understanding that millions of people speak English with different accents and different levels, trying first of all to get the point across, and not pretend to be English or American, is an incredibly liberating thought. Because it means that most likely your interlocutors will not judge you for mistakes and accent and that they understand that learning a language is a process

Watching your videos and watching native speakers in general help me a lot to improve my accent but in fact, for me, it is not important to speak like native speakers, but what is really important is to speak in a way that people can understand what you say.

Your video really enlightened me, you know, many people learning English as a second language in a higher level some times get frustrated because they don't understand English expressions from some particular regions or movies, but as you highlighted can happen to native people too.

Completely agree with You Adam. Here in México every time we look for a job as English teachers, schools always ask us to show them a supporting document where it says we are native speakers or close to it according to the Common Framework of Reference. That's the principals' idea they have in relation to be "native speaker".. The deep knowledge of the language that one person possesses.

@@user-ci8od5yi4k No, it isn’t ! The truth is China has always wanted to swallow Taiwan up, so keep claiming we're part of them. Taiwan is very different from China. We have an independent government and we are a DEMOCRATIC country. We have freedom of speech, freedom of press, and REAL elections.
