Another example of greenwashing: here in Finland I noticed Colgate toothpaste changing its packaging into a darker paper (brownish) as if it was enough. They still use plastic packaging for the product itself + most toothpaste brands have the exact same paper part, just white. That brown part might be recycled paper (didn't check), but even so, they are still making the minimum effort. By the way, great content as always!

This is something everyone has to start paying more attention to. I agree with Gittemary when she says that we as consumers feel significantly and extremely small in front of these mega companies and makes us re think that what we as an individual can do about sustainable fashion. They make themselves as our saviors and using amazing vocabulary and talking about how they can save the day. But in reality they have done more bad than any good. Thank You soo much for bringing this into the light!! 😊😊

Recognising greenwashing is one of the hardest things I find, especially in fashion. I try to buy more second hand items but sometimes that is impossible for me and I turn to new clothes. As I cannot afford fair fashion alone I tend towards bigger brands but always select the suistanable option to at least try to make a difference. Sometimes it can be almost hearbreaking doing all this research as one gets the feeling, you can't buy anything anymore. Thank you for this video anyways, it was very eye opening (and funny). :)

H&M - Trying to encourage sustainable fashion whilst building an empire of fast fashion. My local H&M has one aisle of ‘conscious’ fashion amongst dozens of aisles that don’t boast that label. Here in Italy it's kind of a mix: tetrapak is supposed to go in paper. The idea is if box are grinded the paper pulp can be extracted and reused while the wax/plastic/alluminium will be scooped up and go with trash and burned.

I recently emailed a company that makes noodles and they are called Ocean's Halo. I was so excited to find noodles in a paper packaging that were plain ramen noodles. When I opened the box, all of the noodles were wrapped in plastic. I wrote to them telling them that it was weird to have their company's name be Ocean's Halo and have wheat noodles in plastic packaging. I'm pretty sure you can just have them not packaged with plastic in the paper box (it's just wheat and water). They just replied saying that they are working to make biodegradable plastic for all their products. But why plastic at all??
@iLoveGumDrops
@iLoveGumDrops 2 жыл бұрын
It’s positive that they replied to you at all but that’s definitely an odd choice to wrap them in plastic… the Barra brand uses cardboard boxes with a plastic window but the noodles/pasta are still floating around the cardboard box(?) if there is worry for contaminants or the like, there are comparisons to show :)

The thing about H&M is they’ve made it look like they’re encouraging a change in their consumers behaviour but actually it’s potential consumers and CSR consequences that’s driving them, not the desire to have more sustainable clothing. If they were that arsed all of the clothes in their shop would meet those requirements. If anything it’s an advert that they don’t.

Great video, really enjoyed it. About the "Paper bottle" - I follow Innisfree on Instagram and when they were launching the product last year, they showed that inside is a plastic packaging (something like we reduced the plastic content by 50% and the paper layer is to replace it). So while people who follow them on Instagram wouldn't think it is just a paper bottle, I understand why some other consumers could get confused, especially if they are in the store and don't have time to read more about the product. Korean skincare really helped my skin, but I am desperately waiting for some of the Korean skincare companies to finally start working on getting their products more sustainable.

For my drama test this week I had to write and read out a speech with a topic of my choice. Everyone chose topics like pets or videogames but I wrote about sweatshops... only my teacher read it but I felt like educating people, even if it's just one person. I'm not sure she's actually going to make changes but at least now I've made a very small impact by telling people some of the things I know. I'm trying to make a difference. I've seen a film called "seaspiracy" and it's on Netflix. It's about fishing and whaling and the impact it has. I'd recommend watching it, it's really good. It's a little scary at some points though so you've been warned. There's a scene with whaling that made me cry but overall the film is awesome If you watch it please let me know what you think. Excellent video, loved it! Gotta love the 80% transparency and the slimmer plastic cap that is still on a 100% virgin plastic bottle 😂 These were all hilarious and also sad at the same time.

Thank you for this video. It's very difficult to feel like you as a consumer can make a difference, especially since the onus seems to be more on us, rather than mega corporations that contribute more to the single-use plastics and bad practices that have taken such a huge toll on the environment. I'm going to research any product I buy in the future to ensure they're not green-washing like these brands.

Great video Gittemary! I share your frustration. Thanks for calling out these companies! We all have to boycott fast fashion companies and support sustainable ones instead. This way workers can make a living wage and we know who made our clothes#whomademyclothes. Thanks for what you do!! 💚💚

What makes me angry are products that have a vegan label but test on animals or by ingredients that were tested on animals. It just does not make sense! Also i love Lush and Bodyshop but they need to start looking into better ingredients than sodium laureth sulfate, essential oils and fragrences.
@davidthescottishvegan
@davidthescottishvegan 3 жыл бұрын
Technically according to the definition of veganism if it is tested on animals and contains animal based ingredients it is not vegan so even if it contains no animal ingredients but it is tested on animals it's not vegan so describing a product that is vegan but doesn't meet the definition of veganism means it is not vegan so claiming it is is a misleading claim.

Hey, I saw an Instagram post yesterday about how bad colored clothes are for the environment and that buying undyed clothes will help that. How do you feel about this and could u make a video about that issue? Is it still fine to buy dyed clothing from sustainable companies?
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is definitely better to buy the clothes from sustainable brands - also when they are dyed. Fast fashion and all unsustainable brands (aka also luxury brands) have no water treatment systems in place, so their chemical dyes are flushes straight out into the rivers and oceans that local communities are dependent upon. Many sustainable companies use plant-based dyes and have systems in place to reuse dyes in a closed system rather than letting them out to pollute important water systems. I definitely recommend watching River Blue, it is a documentary that goes into detail about this issue 🌿🙌

If you do buy un-dyed clothing, it can be surprisingly easy to dye them at home using food scraps. I'm pretty sure that avocado stones create a soft pink due for example.

With the h&m add, why the hell is future "eco-friendly" Maisie wearing so much glitter?! Literally one of the most common types of microplastics. Even if I didn't already know, that was the thing that made it super obvious that the whole campaign was just green washing.

Sadly we can sum everything up simply by understanding that capitalism doesn't care about anything but money. As long as the end goal of any company is to just make money, every action they take will be made towards that goal and every incentive they create for consumers will ultimately be made to make money, not a difference. As long as it's a long lasting known brand and you care about going green, eco, environmental friendly etc. just avoid them or at least avoid their 'eco friendly' campaigns. Anything they push towards the consumer will just be made to profit off of what's trendy now. Either find companies that at their core / foundation care about making a change and that's their identity in the industry or as per usual hope that enough regulation get put in place over time to make companies go environmentally friendly (which will in all likely hood never happen or it will take a lot more years before something like that would happen).

Another example: Grunbag! They say that their 'purpose is to make quality bags from sustainable and environmentally friendly materials'. My question is: in which universe tarpaulin is an environmentally friendly material?
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 3 жыл бұрын
Well, when it is upcycled and repurposed, it is for sure a great material that often ends up in landfills or by being wasted in other regards 🌿
@BetwixtDandD

@@Gittemary Upcycling and repurposing man-made, non-biodegradable materials (tarpaulin for bags, plastic bottles for clothes, etc.) is, IMO, greenwashing because you are 'legitimazing' undestructible materials that we should be moving away from and eventually banning, not finding 'new' uses for them.
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 3 жыл бұрын
@@BetwixtDandD I think we have two different takes but ultimately believe the same thing. We absolutely need to push the plastic industry to innovate and step away from petroleum based solutions, but that happens in a completely different place in the supply chain that repurposing. These materials aren’t going away, ever, and even with innovation they’ll still be around for a while. Furthermore, small companies like Grunbag and many others do not source their materials from the plastic industry, or the primary manufacturer of the product in the first place. They’re sourced from recycling facilities, and waste management programmes.
@BetwixtDandD
@BetwixtDandD 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gittemary Yes, I understand that there is a huge difference between using new and recycled materials. Grünbag is doing good in this regard. But on their site they say that they use 'environmentally friendly materials' but almost ALL of their products (except canvas totes) are made from PE or PVC coated with polyethylene, and nylon. Greenwashing and false advertising at its best.
