Another idea would be to paint the different sections of their armour different colors so that they look like stuck-together pieces of scavenged metal.

Just realised that your Orks would look Slaneshy if you painted them like War Boys and Chrome’d would just look like metal teeth. Though I love to hear an Ork yell “Witness Me!!!”.

With Orks, there is any number of reasons why the Mad Max army has samurai in it. They looted T'au armour. They saw White Scars in action, some of them liked the bike part, some the sword part. They were a roaming waaaghband the larger army encountered and adopted because they're useful. They want to challenge the warboss but need to prove themselves worthy in battle first... Did I mention I love orks?

“I wanna do this cool theme, but it doesn’t fit my current army.” Never had that problem. Just start a new army with that theme. It’s why I have 2 ork armies and 3 Slaaneshi armies.

My AoS Chaos started as Nurgle, then I thought, let's ally them with Khorne, that makes sense, they get along alright. I was kinda stuck mentally because I wanted to add the other gods but I kept thinking about the animosity that it would lead to among the troops, but I really wanted some Slaanesh and Tzeentch units. Eventually I just thought, hey they've united under an undivided Lord and now I can just use whatever, and that feels really good being able to tie themes together.

Not only do I love the skin on this particular ork, but the random for all is the one of the best things I have heard of.

Color theory can be a tricky thing and I could go on about it for ages, but a neat trick I learned pretty early in my career was that brightening and darkening you're colors with other colors rather than black and white will often improve the paintjob. One of the many reasons for this is how much black and white desaturate your colour, and how quickly it does it. If you instead, take green for example add a brighter yellow to the green it will still be closer in saturation, still look vibrant and still look brighter/like light is hitting raised parts, the same goes for shadows, though saturation tends to be a bit less important in shadows. A great way to see this IRL is looking at snow at sundown, Blue/Purple Shadows against orange/yellow highlights on the snow where light hits. This is of course an oversimplification of it all, with many more factors, but in general it can look a lot better. If you however want it to be less saturated, if that is the intent then of course going with black and white are great choices. This is just a tip worth knowing about and far from a hard rule. It can really if applied correctly level up a paint job. Also, loved the Orks, great colour scheme!

I like idea you use 3d printing in your armies. Lots of Warhammer people trying to avoid topic of kit bashing minis with 3d printed parts or even print armies. with Printers 4k and even 8k resin quality is fantastic so I'm happy to see you using it all to make your army original and different

They fit right in, different but similar enough to be on the same team. Early RT-era 40K encouraged mixing different looking figures into one force - Army/Guard could be from many different human worlds, plus the abhuman space hobbits, dwarves, ogres, and goatmen. Even different marines could be side-by-side when working for a trader. Official rules for allies mixed things up even more - orks could be allied to several different armies.

Man, the great thing about this show is that it's about so much more than painting minis. It's about art, creativity, motivation. There are thoughts and ideas here that can be applied to any hobby/discipline. I've watched so many hours of this show and I don't even paint minis! It's seriously inspiring and Jay is such a charismatic host. Keep up the great work!

Making cool things is what the hobby is about for me. I don't think anyone should get bogged down by a set scheme. (not that scheme's are always bad, just if they are limiting your enjoyment).

2:33 haha Specialty squads my friend. I am collecting a full chapter of space marines, Dark angels successor chapter with a purple and bone quartered colour scheme. Each each of the 10 companies has a theme: Heavy Infantry (gravis and terminators), Fast attack, deamon hunters (100 strong grey knights), Shock an aww (blood angels with sanguinary guard) etc. Each company is lead by a command squad which lets me put custom cool stuff in including other factions HQs. I can play them as any chapter, and they all look great together despite their diversity. Then anything that doesn't fit into this structure is called a specialty squad. Formed for a specific mission, Lost and having to survive using any means for years only to return or even just a group of miss fits who found strength in unique doctrines or combat styles. Its fun for me.

I can't belive how good that armour came out. A lot of youtubers are getting a bit snooty about wash and dry brush, but this shows it has some mileage! I'm gonna try and translate this approach to a space marine. Possibly a fairly weathered one. 😄

Excited for my Astra Militarum Army... I am gonna say that it's the sector as a whole which mixes and matches so many planets... I wrote the lore so one planet has horses and lances for feral ork hunting, and another planet full of snow and ogryns... Another planet of tyranid hunters who ride around dirtbikes and industrial equipment. The capital system has your standard blue-clad guardsmen, and the other two are full of domed cities who can't even afford lasguns and regiments of mobile bases...

Awesome Orks! Here's a tip to working with true metallic paints: treat them like they're nmm. Especially where you prefer to highlight rather than shade. Start with a darker metallic, wash it down so it's a bit matte, and follow that up with some volumetric highlights. Vallejo MCA colors work well for this with just a teeny tiny bit on the brush. Vallejo MCA colors also mix extremely well with contrast paints (add a drop or two gloss varnish for stability) so u could consider giving that a try too.

Did that with my guard more or less. Decided each squad would have a variation of my camo scheme, and it has kept me sane.

I didn't pick up the eyes being painted, even on a screenshot. Minis not really finished without the eyes giving it soul. Interesting tip playing with the metallic on grey.

Just combine the Cyberpunk-Akira theme with the used and rusted MadMax Roadwarrior theme and you’ll get a great look for that Samurai Ork

Love what you have done, I think the only way to build on these would be to paint the larger flat sections of armour as road signs.. that would tie the samurai theme in, in a big way

Revisiting my Orks has me watching a bunch of back log Orks content, like this video! Thanks! On this topic though, my Tau are desert themed Tau/Kelshan sept disillusioned by a recent conflict with the Gorgon fleet of Tyranids, and are beginning their deflection to the Farsight Enclaves. Anyway, I have the new Farsight model and have decided that a unit of three crisis units and the Shas'o himself need to be red, so they are red!

Thank you for helping dispel the hesitancy some have for third party models and bits. GW does not have a monopoly on sculpting talent.

I for one like my discions I made 5 years ago for the most part but I do retract stuff even in my media setting like a helmet visor being silver in the book but in the art but my girlfreind changed my mind to have it be gold intsead... It happens.

One thing that I am working on right now is building a red coursairs army, however, one person does have a interesting style to his Miniatures line that is perfect for both a emperor's children and flawless host army too.

I've been doing the same thing with my army; I have a good general theme in mind but I mix it up per batch of units. Like the Intercessors that are grouped with my Sargent all have yellow arms to match the Sargent's yellow head, somethiing unique to that group.

For painting metals, I had a lot of success doing demi metals. It's a standard citadel dark mid highlight, but about 2 parts metal and 1 part of an equivalent grey

If you're doing a Mad Max Ork army you need some more Chrome. Maybe add in a couple of kitbashed copters to be the Gyro Captain or a Pursuit Special in there

I kitbashed My Supressors since i cant stand the moon shoes and wanted more bulk for a body to better fit with the massive weapon. I have the body of inceptors and the arms and weapons of the supressors. I also based them very similar to you since i also dont like the flying stand. Great work! 😄

The idea of an ork tribe inspired by Japan, weebs, and anime is... simply glorious. What about the banners? Are they just red flags or might they have logos or icons, be they grim or silly? Mechs that look like "Big O" and "Evangelion". Using looted Noise Marine blasters as melee guitars like "FLCL". Kommandoz styled like Ninja Turtles. Weird Boyz inspired by oni, DBZ, and/or Akira. Pain Boyz dressed like the nurse from Pokemon, experimenting on squigs to make them actual Pokemon. The possibilities are endless.

eh samurai and post-apocalyps goes to gethere like pb&j. just look at samurai jack or a little movie called Six String Samurai. It combines rock a billy, the apocalypse, and a guitar playing dude with a katana and is great fun.

Orks replace their teeth regularly and probably don't eat much sugar, so I think its pretty likely they'll have decent teeth
