We get a lot of questions from podcast listeners and customers at Outdoor Legacy asking if they should buy a scope or a handheld monocular first. Or maybe they already own a scope but they aren't sure if they should upgrade to a nicer scope or buy a thermal monocular and keep using their current scope. Every situation is a little different but several of the same general type of questions keep reoccurring and we understand why....night vision and thermal optics aren't cheap, they are confusing for many people. Everyone wants to spend their money wisely, so they have the best possible setup that will insure them the best chance for success in field. No matter if you don't own a single night vision or thermal device or you already own more than one but you're thinking about upgrading, this podcast has great information that can help offer advice on the things you need to consider before making that next purchase.

*** Why Hunt Hogs? ***
Our journey into wild/feral hog hunting started like many others living in rural communities. We didn't start hog hunting for fun or sport... we did it because we had to. You see, hogs cause millions of dollars of damage and destruction each year in rural communities and our situation was no different. Hogs were destroying our land and that our of friends and family. The vast majority of hunting stories that you hear about on this channel are hogs, boars and sows, taken from family land... this problem is personal for us...

*** Why Hunt Coyotes and Predators? ***
Coyotes and Predators, similar to hogs, cause financial stress for many families in rural communities. Coyotes kill livestock, plain and simple. Ranchers have battled coyotes killing cattle since the early days of ranching and it costs them dearly. Cattle ranching is a business, the cows aren't pets, every time they lose a calf to a coyote those families lose a paycheck. Cattle ranchers hate coyotes just as much as Farmers hate hogs! We hunt coyotes to protect the livelihood of our friends and neighbors that depend on their cattle business to feed their family...

Monocular / binocular first and most important. On average outing you spend much more time scanning than shooting. In fact sometimes if you don't see anything out, you will spend all evening scanning and not even take the rifle off the shoulder. That's where to invest and a great night vision scope can be had less than the cheapest thermal scopes. Much better id with a decent IR scope over the cheapest thermal scopes too.

Great info. Just getting into night ops with my .357 bulldog air rifle. Got my caller , now right at the point where this conversation is key.

Jason told me to get the thermal monocular after i had night vision scope. I agree with him 200%. It takes seconds to scan a field. Ill be getting a thermal scope next.

Great video. I think y'all explained what works the best, very well. People on the fence want you guys to flat out tell them what to do, and you guys are starting to push people off the fence instead of trying to talk them down.

The thought of looking through the scope and seeing a human form is chilling and is against all safety practices. That's why a monocular for scanning is imperative . Safety first.

You can get by with out night vision scope of any sort if they start off with a green or red torch light. So a handheld thermal still should/or could be first item to purchase.

I would drive where your hunting from Houston if I can join you or check out the optics. Sounds like fun, I have a IR laser and holographic sight but that’s it.

Curious to know if y’all think keeping the scope on the gun and just panning it on the tripod while having it paired to your cell phone and using the phone as your hand held scanner might be the way of the future. That way a person could add cheaper scope&scanner money together and use it for a higher end scope... Hans...I’m not saying you’re slackin on your yt channel...but you’re slackin on your yt.. P.S. next Thursday is not April 17th, u didn’t fool me!

So just to confirm. I don’t have any night gear. So first purchase should be thermal scope followed by thermal scanner when money allows? Considering infiray CH50, Rico RH50 and FH25R or E6 plus V2

Know it's years on but for benefit of others, I think takeaway would be thermal scanner, nv scope best to get going with.

I once had some kin who had a thermal, he said you can see through ladys tops with em. Is that true? Boy howdy that would be a heck of a deal if so. Either way great show, and great question for next week!
