Welcome back to the final installment of my special series of interviews with my kids. So far, you’ve heard from my firstborn, Hannah, my eldest son, Hunter, and my youngest, Anthony. Today, I’m chatting with my thirdborn, Angelo.
Angelo and I share very similar birthdays - only four days apart - and he’s the one who’s most like me emotionally. As I would have been, he was the hardest to pin down, but now that he’s back from college, we sat down for a great conversation. Angelo’s life started eventfully. He was born about five weeks early, right before 9/11, and was the only one of my children who was breech. Unlike his older siblings, I never know what to expect from Angelo in terms of his school and career journey, and it’s always interesting to see where he ends up.
In this episode, Angelo and I talk about his early days, experiences in private school, developing self-awareness and empathy, how his academic outlook has changed between high school and college, his career aspirations, how he developed his philosophical outlook, and more. Thanks for your support, and enjoy the episode!
Episode Highlights:
- The unique circumstances around Angelo’s birth
- Early childhood memories in Tucson
- What it was like to transition to a new school in the sixth grade in Austin
- Benefits and drawbacks of attending a private school versus a public school
- How your socioeconomic background influences your perspective on relationships and interactions with people from different walks of life
- The impact of distractions and unhealthy coping mechanisms on Angelo’s academic performance in high school
- Angelo’s journey of adapting to college and discovering what works best for him
- What it was like to have senior year in high school and first year of college during the peak of the pandemic
- Angelo’s decision to attend the University of Colorado and major in philosophy
- The challenges and adjustments in adapting to the environment as an intern at Charles Schwab
- The significance of not being stagnant
- Angelo’s philosophical outlook on life
Confession: Recognize that you have the power to choose your outlook on life

Dr. Tassone you do a wonderful job of pulling info out of each child relevant to each one. As a parent I would be so grateful to realize that the private school actually did pay off for your son and when he reviews this interview many years from now I think he will see it too. Your son reveals that as a child of upper middle class parents he was given privileges that others are not ( in the form of experiences and dinners out and clothing purchases) I think this shows growth in that he realizes he had this while others did not. I think this will enhance his compassion and empathy for others. Your son is obviously thinking about how soon he will only have his own resources to fund his life style choices. I wish him the very best. My own 22 year old son is set to graduate from Georgia tech in the winter. Great interview!

Enjoyed it. Especially the Sisyphean talk at the end. Thinking that life becomes what we literally think…it was the beginning of my exploring Buddhism in more depth, way back in 1980ish. Best belief system I could have found for myself…40 years later.
