Drew Thornton is the FOH Engineer for Billie Eilish and since the industry shut down in March, he started this project named A Sum of Two Busses. He will be diving into his front of house rig for Billie's live show. While using some virtual soundcheck he will be walking you through some of his tips, tricks, and approaches while demonstrating interesting things that the Allen and Heath's DLive console and Waves SuperRack has to offer.
His goal is to make some fun and interesting videos focused around live sound mix engineering, the Dlive, Waves Soundgrid and share some tips, tricks and theories regarding live sound.

Coming back to this video 2 years later, I just tried this on my SQ5 last night because my mix was missing some glue. Decided to try driving the master buss into the red via the makeup gain on the master buss compressor and I cannot believe how good it sounded!

That's actually exactly why people still love the Midas Pro series. The way that line of desks breathes and pumps is just amazing. And dLive was the only desk that came to mind when I decided to switch to another system (for various reasons, none of which were sound related), since I NEED this. That moment, when all comes together and becomes more than just the sum of it's parts...To me, this is what a desk should do. It is a summing device, so make it awsome at that, digital or not. I was told by a Pro series developer that some of the Midas guys went over to A&H after MUSIC bought Midas. And I think you can actually hear that. I was not a big fan of the A&H stuff. The GLD and the other desks of that generation were spec sheet monsters and had some great ideas incorporated, but they just fell short in the sound department. But the current desks...oh boy. Those are some awsome machines. Combine that with a great company spirit, a great ecosystem, a contemporary UI and awsome support - and there you have it.

For the last few weeks Ive been driving the LR of my newly acquired dlive into the red. I wasn't particularly worried, but I must say, it is nice to have some independent confirmation for what my ears were telling me. Great vids dude.

Really interesting investigation, Drew! I would love to chat with our friends at Allen & Heath about this because it seems to be, like you pointed out, a conscious design decision rather than an inherent limitation of the digital summing architecture. Perhaps an effort to make the gain structure of the desk "feel" more like the analog summing buses of yore. Thanks for sharing.

The bit depth allows for so much headroom that we basically can never exceed it's limitations. It is very clever to tune the result of the compensated gain change. If it didn't sound better itd be a problem!

Woah super surprised by this result! Loving these videos Drew thanks. One of the bands I work for bought a dLive system before this whole no touring thing happened. I’ve had it at my house doing VSC’s so I went ahead and tried this just now, mind blown 🤯. Mix glue magic. Is this intentional? Weird how +9db into -9db seems to really be the sweet spot for me too. Might have to hit up Bangs and see if he has any info about this.

If you apply Dave Rats DCA/Group method for driving your groups in and out of compression you can relay make the dLive shine over other desk that hate red lights. You should not be afraid on red lights on an A&H qu, sq & dLive. They are unlit any other digital board on the market.

I'm very surprised by this outcome, Drew. One of the big advertising points for Dlive is "Virtually infinite mix headroom thanks to 96bit accumulator". It doesn't seem like you're pushing that far into the red, but of course the waveforms show the effects. I would have expected basically no difference between the various pre- and post-fader moves you did here, unless you were pushing more level into a compressor.

arock no compression no bus treatment at all!! Just that eq I mentioned in the video. And that’s the crazy part, I believe they have crazy headroom, but at 9db into the mix bus it doesn’t come out of the red. Very fascinating!

@@asumoftwobusses6304 Since Keith Johnson (A&H SQ Product Manager) said that the SQ uses the same internal architecture as the dLive, I could see using the same method when mixing music in the studio. (I'd bet using stem busses of different instruments and summing them in the SQ using the compressors/Tube Stage would be an interesting test.)

This looks more like a bug than a feature to me. The holly grail of digital summing is to make it as transparent as possible. What can we see here is some clip limiter without any user parameters, that at least according to official Dlive advertising is not even supposed to be here. I'd much rather have a transparent summing with L2 inserted, that I can at least bypass if I don't like what its doing.

Pantikan to each their own! Totally hear ya. Regardless I still think this effect is far more transparent than an L1/L2, and this demonstration is hitting much harder than I would suspect most people would go on any digital platform. Hence why I would disagree on it being a bug.
