Lampard and Gerrard have played under some of the best coaches in world football, so I would think they been exposed to many different tactical approaches. In the grand scheme of things neither of them have been given loads of time in their respective jobs. Generally Everton and Villa are not easy jobs. Both huge clubs that have underachieved for years and do not have the same pulling power as the top 4/6.

Right and then you have guys like Carrick who I'm very intrigued to see what he can do. A fantastic player who spent at least a few years as an assistant under Jose, one of the best coaches in the world. So kind of a combination of both, not anywhere close to climbing the ladder like Potter and Howe, but still didn't go straight to a prem job.

@Failed Aragorn he's been a failure up to this point. Frank's time at chelsea was poor... not ok. If he'd achieved at west ham what he achieved at chelsea fine.. but its still chelsea. Go to real madrid and do what he did and see what they do. I hear your point about not classing him a failure... but still he has failed at his body of work in the premier league. Frank was lucky to stay up last year and that form carried on into this year. Using the same analogies that these two used... if someone comes in at everton and keeps them up this year... and keeps them up next year... success or failure?

Spent too much at Derby which bankrupted them, did well one season at Chelsea and then spent loads on dross and spent at Everton but bought or loaned in everyone's cast offs...poor manager. Gerrard got backed at Villa and spent loads then upset the dressing room and was found out tactically

Lol, you're so right. I've always wondered how such a so called legendary player could have such basic limitations. In the 2010 WC Fabio Capello also moved him to the same wing with Ashley Cole and he kept drifting out of position and disrupting the formation and failing to track back. Joachim Lowe the German Coach noticed this and the German team began to overload that left wing position and poor Ashley Cole found himself having to face two or three German attackers at the same time because Gerrard didn't understand the meaning of tracking back. Someone once said that he had the positional sense of an amoeba and I agree 100%.

so many 'experts' said Lampard or Gerrard would be better appointments for NUFC than Howe because 'young players would want to play under their childhood heroes' - just goes to show having a reputation from your playing days is no substitute for managerial craft that comes from time and experience in the dugout.

Per Simon's point, look at the difference between Villa under Emery vs Gerrard. Same group of players under Gerrard hurtling towards relegation; under Emery Villa are 5 points from being in the top 6. In my opinion, all down to superior coaching, man management and tactical know how.

Would be nice to see british managers who come out of that framework to try their hands more at coaching abroad and actually approach management from a coaching perspective that you see the likes of klopp, pochettino, potter, Ten Hag, arteta and Pep (in the beginning) be associated with as opposed to trying to rush into roles before getting their hands dirty and learning that aspect of the craft.

As a Villa fan, the issue can be boiled down to SG's lack of coaching, tactical awareness and man management. He can talk the talk, but he needs to go get experience and learn from his experiences.

This is true. Gerrard should have stayed at the Liverpool Academy and worked his way up to being an assistant coach under Klopp. This would have helped him to build the fundamental skills and tactics for being an EPL Manager.

Pep has said that he could not have done at Leeds what Bielsa did with the limited resources and players. By the same token, I would say that Gerrard and Lampard could be given all the riches of Pep's Man City, take his position tomorrow and they would fail. Mills said that Lampard did okay at Chelsea. He wasn't awful and wasn't great...that's what Mills said. He said that Gerrard was a failure in the Prem. He was. Not sure why Mills is getting so much grief.

Think saying lampard is a failure is too harsh. Don’t forget he managed a top 4 finish at chelsea with a transfer embargo and played kids who hadn’t really proved themselves in the premier league. Also in his 2nd season they were in first place in December. Was he ready and fully equipped for that job? No absolutely not. He lost the squad and was too rigid to change tactics. Saying he is a failure is way too harsh.

Love Simon to bits but he called Steve cooper a perennial loser and although there is plenty of time for things to go wrong at Forest starting tonight I think the way he took adversity on and managed to turn the situation around some what to get them to mid table is commendable. Maybe the time simon said it he was somewhat a failure in club managerial terms but the great thing about life and the job your in is you can turn your fortunes around and he did that with Nottingham Forest. Time will tell if he can sustain that but Frank and Gerrard have to use this as character building. They did that as players and had many set backs and went again. I’m sure they will reflect and come back in another capacity maybe take a job in the championship and work their way up. But never count anyone off in life cause you never know when that charge is coming!

That's bit harsh calling them failures as young manager's. Name me a manager in history of the game in their early years in management that didn't do mistakes? They would be called failures, if they've been in management for over 10+ years and keep doing same mistakes time after time. Judging them already as managers is madness yet there's been managers out there who's been in game for some time and haven't done enough in their own management careers.

If you took away their playing careers, and forgot who they were, they'd be regarded as a couple of EPL managerial failures so far. Playing and managing require two completely different set of skills, and former players shouldn't be given plum managerial jobs on the basis of their playing careers.

So many ex pros don’t do the hard yards learning the trade and just jump into a big team and they are completely out of their depth. Many have played under supreme managers who make the job look easy at times and so they reckon they can come in and do the same as they have seen it first hand

Brilliant British managers of the past had to work from the bottom up. Bobby Robson, Brian Clough, Alex Ferguson etc big name players who plunge straight into top clubs usually struggle statistically. They might get one off decent seasons but egos get in the way.

You cant fake tactical nous, lampard has the same basic principles since derby. He is a bonafide failures, also goes for his coach team. Reminds me of southgate. Maybe everyone that is trained by the FA and has licenses there were being taught the same philosophy. Solksjaer took his license with english fa as well. All three have identical passing patterns especially around half way line and passing it among the cb. Identical

Frank needs to coach the youth teams. He needs players that look up to him and take every word in. Kids will give you that. Then he needs to grow from that rep to produce the best young players and (if he gets the chance) recruit them to his next club once they have come up. Frank is good at tablet spotting tuchel is good tactically with the talent.

Aside from the comments from the hosts and underneath mine, it never ceases' to amaze me how the best managers have never really achieved much success during their playing days. Klopp, Tuchel, Ferguson, Clough, Busby, Shankly etc. Just because you were an elite player doesn't make you an elite manager.

Elite players, rarely make elite managers. It's the same in most sports. The best coaches are usually, somewhat failed/less skilled players. Klopp, Guardiola, Wenger, Tuchel, Howe. There is always exceptions to the rule.

Please judge them on the the job they did in their last appointment. If you base it on success then they failed. Both Lauren and Hardy need to set their heights on the lower league and stick with that team for 4 to 5 years and taking their team from league 2 to the championship. Then build that team to get promotion to EPL, that's what good managers do. If you get relegated so be it, just win promotion again. Some unexperienced managers getting easy opportunities in the getting the job and when it's turns sour they pick up a tidy wage packet. Start a lower league and make a quality team and you can avoid the stigma of .....that's another fine mess we're in.

Fine players though they were, neither was the 'complete midfielder' vaunted by their admirers. Both had weaknesses. To reprise one of my old catchphrases: Gerard played alongside three of the best midfielders of his era in Alonso, Hamann and Mascherano. Four if you include England honours and turn a blind eye to his marauding antics which stunted Paul Scholes' performance (i.e. strictly speaking, he was only 'alongside' the maestro Scholes during kick-off formation). Lampard found his way into the England side next to Gerrard and successive managers stuck with that tired-and-tested losing formula for something like 500 games. Great achievement, all those caps. My estimation of them as players (which, despite my candid insights, was already high) increased in both cases at the twilight of their careers. Pep Guardiola cannily heeding my advice that Lampard had great impact sub potential. Gerrard finally opened the door to Mr. Positional Discipline when he adopted a sweeper berth. Estimation further raised when they gave short shrift to the media pundit sweet trolley during brief ex-player purgatory and opted to return to the coal face as managers. Furthermore, a specific Gerrard anecdote: he refused to be drawn on Liverpool sentiment during a pre-match interview and stated he was 100% committed to his work with Villa. They're at the start of their managerial careers and I believe they both have a lot more to offer. Neither are failures, they're both winners. Winning is good but never giving up is more important. Giving up rarely furnishes a victory. The never-give-up quotient is greater than the winning equation. I believe these two have that in their character.
