In "No Maintenance Required", Anthony finds out the hard way that doing no maintenance to his equipment comes at a price. After the intro and before the ending, Taryl goes over what it takes to swap out a Honda engine from this Whacker compactor over to a new Briggs and Stratton 6.5 hp Vanguard engine. Taryl has the know-how to get the job done right. So sit back, laugh, and you just might learn a thing or two! Now there's your dinner!!

I see there’s a lot of back and forth on quality matters between the Honda and Briggs. Don’t get me wrong, I like Honda engines, very reliable for many years, but Honda has NOT made ANY improvements to that engine, or addressed the common issues it was having. On both Vanguard repower videos we’ve now done, both customers are more than satisfied with the Vanguard. Especially with the fact it warms up quick (Honda does NOT), the air filter plugging up often, and also the fuel getting into the gas. In my 40+ years of experience in this field, there’s always a company on top for awhile then someone else slips in for awhile so on and so forth. It’s a very competitive market. Like anything. It’s your job as a consumer to keep yourself informed and not just blindly stand behind something that isn’t what it used to be. And There, my friends, is a banquet Dinner. Thanks fer watchin.

When you're an international company like Honda making billions every year on parts, the old leadership in the company sticks to the old gravy train. The engineers do what they're told. Not talk about what they could improve.

Briggs has come a long way from the old L-head 5hp (with the hard to get to carb bolts) to what they offer today. Being a dealer for over 40yrs, I like brands that have good parts and warranty support, and Briggs has that.

Parts are now being made in China and assembled in the USA. Screw Communist China 🇨🇳. Anytime that I can avoid buying anything from them I do. That’s not an easy task but I still try. I don’t mind buying from free countries like Japan, Germany, or S. Korea but I’m not supporting Communists if I can avoid it. Diahatsu makes excellent gas engines but their compact diesels suck.

This happens so much with these plate tamps. If you don’t use water while using these machines they will generate a lot of dust. Guarantee that machine’s air filter got clogged with dust that the guys using most likely removed the filter. This will destroy the piston rings and eat at the cylinder walls. Combined with your original diagnosis of oil and gas mix then add dust. Ask any equipment rental place, these machines are often returned with the air filter that has been removed or tampered with.

Well Hello Taryl, Glad to see Briggs Stratton doing good, smart set-up shutting off gas with killing spark. I want to say I really enjoy watching ur videoze. . . I'm thinking that with a small angle grinder and drill I could make a valve grinder making sure the valve was at a 45 degree angle to the grinding wheel. . . YUP, Honda did a good job w engines but when 1 thinks they R good 4ever, nope not gonna happen.

I was kind of gritting my teeth in this video Taryl and crew, you're the only one that I know of that will trade in a Honda engine for Briggs, everybody else wants the Honda engine and not the Briggs. Briggs used to make a really good engine but after they pulled out of Brillion Wisconsin they've built nothing but junk for the last 25 years or so.(Chinese made with plastic parts in certain models)I have one of the very last"L"heads ever built and it's on a snapper push mower, that's a 5 horse Briggs IC engine. Its a 1994 model.(Briggs pulled out of Wisconsin in 1992) I have a Briggs Vanguard 18 horse twin on an LX 288 John Deere lawn tractor and it blew a head gasket and I repaired it using copper head gaskets I haven't had any problems since, this is a very common problem with the Briggs Vanguard engine.(other Briggs types too)

ever since honda started making their GX series in china they are trash now too. all of our trash pumps, compactors, concrete saws, air compressors, the carb goes to shit every single time. have equipment with briggs that sit under the same conditions with no issues. not sure why the carbs on hondas are complete trash they just are. its honestly sad because everything else about a honda is great. doesnt matter how good its built if it dont run IT DONT MAKE MONEY!!

That wacker will never do its job again like it used to with the Honda 😆😂 poor little wacker what did it ever do to you guys. You are correct about the needle leaking fuel into the crankcase I believe, it is very common for the Honda’s to leak in that way. If used in a commercial environment it pays to put a new carburetraaaator on OEM about ever other year or so. It’s hard to know for sure though how much use they actually got out of it. Customers always tend to think that they take care of their equipment even when they don’t. Who knows could have never had the oil changed since new also and from the looks of it could be some dirt ingestion too. I can tell you for a fact it’s not easy to wear one of the commercial Honda’s out that they can take a lot of abuse even after years of use.

When he's talking about gas getting the crank case from vibration is why you should check the oil before every use of small engine equipment. I know no one does, but could save you some big $$$. Also should turn the gas off when transporting small engines. Just imagine that carb float bouncing up and down with the trailer letting all that extra gas pass by. Depending on the engine, the extra gas is going right to the crank case.

What did the air filter look like? I'm thinking that since it's covered with cement dust...another possibility would be that the air filter had a hole or didn't seal well, letting lots of concrete dust into the engine which is absolutely like sand paper to the cylinder bore... Or, maybe it had a paper air filter and the air filter got wet and disintegrated? I was always under the impression that the Honda's were bulletproof? What make the Briggs a better engine?

I reckon that Briggs will rattle itself to bits, more oil caps to loose, I reckon the dipstick will shoot out after all the vibration Wacker plates /. construction equipment is abused and works in the harshest of conditions Maybe if the operator was shown to check the oil and isolate the fuel and check for excessive oil on stick ( fuel within) maybe just maybe and engine could be saved I cannot wait for the follow up for the fertiliser spreader... think it would have been better to service the Honda and fit a new carb and maybe check the ignition coil The wet clutch reduction gearbox is there for a reason ... that wacker type clutch will struggle in certain inclines

I know a guy who had a push mower that he thought was shot. It was hard to start and all that stuff. He gave it to me and I checked the oil and sure enough there was n't enough in there. I drained what was still in there and put some fresh oil in and now it starts up one pull. I called him and told him too. He has a new mower he has occasional problems with and borrows it from me. Really since it was his mower I tell him he can keep it if he wants to because it was his and still runs by some miracle after that lack of maintenance. I have no idea what it did if anything to it when it was that low. If he did not know me he probably would have thrown it out. That just shows how much some people know about maintenance. It is kinda frightening and also sad.

Wow in the car world Honda is one of the best engines out there. Can’t believe in small engines that is not the case

*_I'd say B&S isn't the preferred replacement but, you gotta go with how much the customer is willing to pay for the repair. My guess is no matter what engine these compactors use, they're gonna go thru hell due to the vibration factor._*

Wait, What?! 100%true,Briggs is a good engine, probably won't see a difference, except for oil usage, an yeah, the fuel shut off built in is nice

Being that that unit works in a dirty environment could it be possible it was sucking in dirt/concrete dust to wear out the cylinder wall ? How many people using small engines on construction sites run them into the ground and then just go buy another one. Do preventive maintenance. What's that.

I need some Help ! I bought a used riding mower $50 at a yard sale. Briggs 17 twin. New items I have put on, Battery, coil, air filter, plugs, gas filter, and oil. Had the carb rebuilt an put in new reg. fresh gas. Starts up an runs great. Seems to have plenty of power. But if it stalls or I turn it off it will not start. Seems to spin over alright. After it cools off it will start up an run again.

Read on another thread that using iridium spark plugs cured the problem for several people. Good luck

Taryl, I know this video is 4 yrs. old now, but I have a Wacker compactor and I want to change it over to the same Briggs engine that you used. Can you provide me with a part number or model number so I can order one? I watched the video twice and also scanned all the comments but could not find any mention of the engine part number. Thanks
