Episode 1: Alison Gives Advice with David Cho

In this pilot episode of a podcast about giving advice, it’s only fitting that Alison is joined by someone she goes to looking for it - longtime friend and Home Movies darling: David Cho. They discuss with callers the importance of being yourself, posting photos when you’re feeling yourself, and reminding yourself “it’s not about me” when it isn’t. Alison and David also talk cast iron skillets, Costco blueberry muffins, and storing fresh herbs. Call 856-502-4816 to solicit advice on a future episode. Production by Redd Rock Music.

They are not talking over each other. It’s a technical issue. I’ve heard podcast episodes where this happens and the owner would make us aware in another episode that there was an issue with the audio.

You can hear that there’s a lag in response too that’s not normal. I think David’s audio is 1-2 seconds behind Alison’s

My genuine review and (un)solicited advice: I love Alison Roman and look forward to watching this podcast develop. First episode and it's going to blossom into something as successful as all her other ventures. One thing I'd love to see improved is letting guests speak without interruption. Maybe it was being in seperate rooms over a video call, still finding the flow, or just the comfort level of Alison and Davids friendship, etc. In the intro segment David kept having points that were being interrupted and spoken over. That balanced out a bit when the caller was on the show, but it was tough from a listening point of view in the beginning. I expect the host to guide the conversation and interview the guest, giving them the freedom to bring their advice and experiences to the show. Watching on KZfaq helped, but if I were listening in my car it would get a bit too chaotic to hear what was being said. I'm sure that will even out over time as the podcast gets it's footing and again I look forward to that journey into excellence.

I will actually walk this back. I saw the comment about how there werent these issues on the audio version and gave it a listen. It's true. It's a lot easier to cut audio in and out so the conversation sounds fluid, as all podcasts do. That might be more difficult in video, I don't know I'm not an editor. The first example, where Alison jumps in to make a little comment about Davids advice giver needs to practice some self love. In the video it's just talking over David and David takes a second to realize and stops talking. In the audio version, the editor just cuts out Davids unfinished sentence and cuts in Alisons comment so it's much easier to hear. The magic of editing helps a lot. I'm curious if that didn't happen in the video because you can see mouths moving and therefore it's a challenge to cut out the audio of one person and now have it look weird. I'm sure they'll find the solution to that issue, like maybe a full screen cut to Alisons video so that you can clean up the trailing off on Davids and vice versa. Either way, it works much better on the audio versions (go figure it's a podcast) in this first episode. I'm sure the video versions will be just as clean in the future.

I checked the version on Apple Podcasts and it’s synced up fine, so I’m not sure what happened to this video version to have it seem like they’re talking over each other!

I would have loved to hear what each of you were saying , but unfortunately it was impossible due to the constant talking over one another. Please do more of these videos/podcastss, but allow room for each person to speak so your listeners can hear you! 💚💚

I really enjoyed this inaugural podcast with David Cho as guest. Fun to watch Alison and David on KZfaq but the audio was better on the podcast as the interruptions were edited. Yes, I listened twice! Good luck with this new venture, Alison

I almost didn’t recognize David without his cap! I love when David appears on camera during Home Movies. His awkwardness cracks me up. I hope that Dave and Dan keep making appearances.

BTW re FRESH HERBS : the ultimate way to keep fresh is chop the roots off, put them in a cup of water (like flowers) and store in the fridge covered by a bag. I keep coriander fresh for legit 3 weeks on the reg with this method !!!

Thanks! I knew I’d read something like this somewhere. I need it for now as I’ve a huge bunch (with roots!) and will be away for a few days. Heading to the kitchen to ‘bag’ my coriander. I’ll wash and save the roots in the freezer for separate use. They’re awesome too!

I listened on Apple Podcasts and didn't notice any lags or overtalk, and the more David content the better! I definitely appreciated the foodie questions and answers more than the dating and professional advice. There are plenty of other experts and podcasts for those topics. 😀Unless that kind of advice is infused with Alison's personal stories, like from your pastry chef days or how you got your job with BA, for example, then it's not really any different than any other advice show. Someone calls in to talk about publishing? Talk about making your cookbooks! Tell us how you food shopped when you had that tiny kitchen. Tell us every single thing you ate on every trip. Tell us what goes into making Home Movies, some fun BTS stuff. Tell us how you curated your new store. Boom, there's your first season.

It’s not always a man. I worked at the VA for twenty years and had multiple evil bosses. Almost all of them were women and each one was worse than the last. I left with an emergency quad bypass. I wish I’d never gotten that job. I was great at it and it almost killed me.

To everyone commenting that they are talking over each other- if you go listednto the actual audio version of the podcast, it isn't a problem after the editing. I think they just wanted to share the video version here, which has to be in real time.

I genuinely adore Alison and would love to hear more about her experiences working in kitchens, writing cookbooks, opening a store, writing for NYT. But regular career advice, like how to deal w a micro managing boss.... doesn't seem in her wheelhouse and kinda cringey to be frank.

The best podcasters are using equipment in the same studio so there's no delay. This was hard to listen to, and I only heard 5 minutes. Hopefully, Roman's amazing video production team can help iron out the kinks, and podcasters will learn not to talk over each other.

Exactly right! When I was in advertising, I thought what we did was important. It wasn’t, even remotely. It put a roof over our heads and food on the table and I got to work with amazingly talented people. People who teach, people who repair hearts, like the person who repaired mine, people who work in food-banks - they’re the people who really matter.

Thought for a minute that their audio feed must be out of sync, but realized that Alison is just interrupting and talking over David a lot. Annoying as a listener, and more than a bit rude as a podcast host. Hopefully just growing pains in transitioning between casual friend talk conversation style to interview/podcast style discussions.

A very discernible difference between these two. Roman: wants to be in control. Or feels she does. We never have the control we think we do. She will be retired and irrelevant in 15 years. Cho: understands what’s real. Cho is right, most older people do have a broader perspective and realize what they considered important at the time was mostly irrelevant. One doesn’t get real perspective until 45 or 50. That’s when you realize it’s mostly behind you and that it’s downhill from there. Only the truly delusional think they still have any relevance after that age, to the current young generation.
