Hi Everyone! Fresh and Rested from the FEST, Episode 238 finds Andy and Tom discussing the second compilation hits package from Paul, "All The Best!" from 1987 and it's UK vs US configurations and our earliest memories with it. We think it holds up rather well and a brilliant marketing and promotional campaign ensured the album sold well in the homeland (#2) while not doing as well in the US (#62).
It was a pretty pivotal moment in Macca's career coming after some bad critical reviews with Broad Street (84) and Press To Play (86). (Even tho we still love them). He was also pushing a new single at the time with 'Once Upon A Long Ago.'
We discuss this and ponder other potential tracks that could've gone on it.
What are your memories of "All The Best!"? Let us know in the comments below!
Ta Ra,
All The Best! :)
Andy and Tom

Love All the Best! It came out at the perfect time for me as I was just getting into the solo Beatles in 1987. Most of Paul’s back catalogue was out of print at this time as Capitol hadn’t reissued his work on vinyl and cassette (only CD which didn’t help me since I didn’t have a CD player yet). Going into any record store at that time you could only find Press to Play or Broadstreet . I remember my reaction to seeing this in the McCartney section the first week in December 1987 and being so excited to have some classic McCartney on record. It definitely held me over until I bought my first CD player in July 88 and I was able to finally get some of his 1970s work. Thanks guys!

Maybe I’m Amazed (live version) is probably my favorite Paul song, so to learn it was only on the UK edition (studio version) just blows my mind!!

Hey Tom and Andy, Thanks for the shout out!!!! When I graduated from 7th grade my older sister got me the US version on cd. It was my 3ed Paul McCartney cd Flowers being the first and Tug of War being the second. I loved it and as you Andy and Tom felt I had everything which was good because that Summer I was going to see Paul Live for the first time. I bought the UK cd about 16 years ago because of the difference between the track songs. I also have the cd concert sampler of this album (US version) with a second cd of selected songs some from Off the Ground and others from Pauls back catalog. Fantastic episode I really enjoyed it!! It looks like I have to now look for the UK Lp LOL. TO GET THE MOST SONGS LOL. Keep up the Grest episodes the time change Is Good morning noon or night I’ll always watch take care

This is a fantastic compilation! It has the best cover of any of Paul's compilation and one of his best covers ever. I love the little logos for each song, I wish he had kept that as a tradition for his other albums, that was brilliant. I was in the UK in 1989 and brought back a UK CD so that was the first time I heard "We All Stand Together," and "Once Upon a Long Ago." C Moon was included since it wasn't available anywhere else, and Hi Hi Hi was on Wings Greatest.

An outdated collection now but in 1987/1988 it was most welcome. My first Beatlefest in 1990 I bought UK edition of the album on CD. Great show as always guys. We will share a glass in August at the Hyatt Ohare- Jeremy

I remember coming across the U.K. CD version of All the Best! At Peaches Records and Tapes in Fort Lauderdale. I always went straight to the McCartney section because you can get lucky and find imports and sometimes bootlegs. Was surprised to see the U.K CD and immediately handing over my $30.00 for the CD, then I found out about Once Upon A Long Ago when I bought it and was able to find the CD single in Miami, drove 35 miles to buy it. All this before the internet. What memories!

Great show, guys - thank you! I actually bought my first copy of "All the Best" (U.S. version on CD) when it was released in 1987. I soon after found and purchased the U.K. version on CD as well due to the vast differences in set lists. Also Andy, I purchased the Record Collector magazine covering all of Paul's releases - it is VERY comprehensive...a MUST for all McCartney fans!

I favor the studio ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ over the live version! Wish Paul had put ‘Waterspout’ And ‘Once Upon A Long Ago’ on his greatest hits packages. Great discussion guys! I prefer ‘All the Best’!

Both Once Upon A Long Ago {lomg version} and Spies Like Us made an appearance as bonus tracks on the Press To Play cd when the Paul McCartney Collection cd's were issued in Europe in the early 90's. I bought the Once Upon A Long Ago import cd single when it first came out.

Yup, the only was to get Once Upon in the US was the 93 PTP Paul McCartney Collection as an import which IIRC were pretty pricey. More than the average CD.

I am in my early 20s and this, to me, was still very relevant because it was a great and easy way to get Once A Long Ago and We All Stand Together. This was years before the 7" Singles came out, and the remastered versions were made available.

Your right about tv appearances influencing chart success. In the Uk Johns disappearance to the usa contributed to none of his new singles post move getting into the top 20.Whatever gets through the night peaked at only 36,for example. George disappeared from Uk tv/media post Concert for Bangla Desh meaning none of his singles post 1973 get into the top 30 until Cloud nine singles. Ringo also disappeared from the Uk and hasnt had a hit here since 1974. Paul was always on tv during this time and it probably explains why his chart postions were much higher

Very interesting to hear what the album meant to you guys as new fans! I’ve actually never heard this comp, the only comp I have is Wings Greatest. This record store I love always has a Japanese Paul the Best on display, think i’ll pick it up soon!

All The Best was only 62 in the US charts, while Wingspan was 2.

I became a Macca solo fan in 2005 so Wingspan was my intro to his solo stuff. I think it's a fab but flawed compilation because there are so many songs that were not hit singles that were certainly worthy of being singles. Also in regards to Once Upon A Long Ago I first heard that song in 2013 when I got the 93 Press To Play cd from a library. Back On My Feet I discovered in 2021 when I got the Once Upon a Long ago cd single, as Andy alluded to it proves how abundant Paul's career was with riches that you had so many singles like Once Upon a Long Ago that are masterpieces yet they're forgotten about.

the top US/UK 10 hits missing are: Mary Had A Little Lamb, Hi Hi Hi, Maybe I'm Amazed Live, Girl's School, Wonderful Christmastime, Waterfalls, Take It Away, The Girl Is Mine, Spies Like Us and FourFiveSeconds. Others that are missing in my view: My Brave Face, This One, Hope Of Derliverance, Let Me Roll It, Venus And Mars, Arrow Through Me

Well, 'FourFiveSeconds', 'My Brave Face', 'Hope of Deliverance', and 'This One' wouldn't go on this as it was issued in 87.

@@2LegsAPaulMcCartneyPodcast I know I know. But a reissue of it would make it possible. Like with the red and blue, or for Elvis 30 one hits, they just put 10 other well known tracks on there on spotify with no big deal.

Press was a top 20 hit that should have been on All the Best. Getting Closer, Venus and Mars/Rock Show, Spies Like Us, Take it Away, Press, Helen Wheels- all top 20 hits.

The last worldwide hit of Paul McCartney was Hope of Deliverance and that is crazy. Flaming Pie, Young Boy The World Tonight, This Never Happened Before (Lake House song) and others should be hits but Paul embraced his Beatle person. It is kind off his fault. The other thing is the fact that huge hits like Ebony..., Say Say Say, No More Lonely Nights are forgotten. I don't know why.

All The Best was Paul's last big seller here in the UK, it went 3 times platinum and after this, his commercial fortunes like plenty of other artists of his vintage started to decline. Interestingly none of Paul's compilations have any, pardon the pun, legs like Queen's, Elton's, and ABBA's that have had great longevity on the UK charts. Once Upon A Long Ago was Paul's last UK top ten single and I guess that will remain so until he throws off his mortal coil. It's another discussion, but how Paul has handled his post Beatle output is questionable, especially as the archive series is like a barely breathing homo sapien at this point. I've said it before, just release everything in 2 CD or 3 CD sets and vinyl equivalent and get what hasn't been archived out there so old and new fans can get easy access to his post Beatle music.

The obvious miss is Listen to What the Man Said. By the way, the album was called All the Best not All the Hits.

Who called it “all the hits”?
@triplejazzmusicisall1883
@triplejazzmusicisall1883 4 ай бұрын
No-one. That was my point. I should have made that clearer. For me, for example I do not consider Spies Like Us one of Paul's better songs and that might be why he did not include it. The title suggests the album will contain McCartney's best music not necessarily the hits. Songs of course can be both and as for this compilation album I have always thought it an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable listen as well as a great way to familiarize oneself with Paul's solo career.@@2LegsAPaulMcCartneyPodcast

Sorry but Mull Of Kintyre was an all time classic by Paul. About 10 years after the release it could have been on the US version aswell. Why should it be excluded there? Its one of "the best".

Wasn't a hit in the US tho so that''s why it was omitted. The whole US/UK market thing for compilations now in hindsight is rather silly. Throw all the tracks on there!
