In Poland, roughly 50% of the population does not believe that homosexuality is normal. As an openly gay man living in Warsaw, Tom Shay'an is reminded of this everyday.

Alicia Basically... I live in a town in western Poland (not that conservative compared to the east) and in the middle of the day I was walking down the town square. A grown man started yelling at me that he was gonna „beat the shit out of me" and that I deserve it etc because I was wearing mom jeans lol He considered it unwomanly and said something about my parents raising me wrong. He used like 19819 curse words and was very aggresive. Nobody reacted and it was in the middle of the day with many people around. I'm a 5'1 teenage girl...

In Poland people strongly believe that gay people have some characteristics 😅 like if man doesn’t have this really “sharp” and “male” look, does care about himself (like hair, skin, etc.) he’s considered to be gay or at least “not male”. That’s sad. For lesbians the stereotype is being a feminist 😅, being vegan, having colourful hair and/or short hair. Sadly we don’t have any sexual education in Poland so people mostly just don’t understand and don’t want to understand what is tolerance and why we all should be tolerant.

I go to the Polish equivalent of high school and I am harassed very often despite the fact that neither I nor my boyfriend do anything wrong. Their excuse is that it may disgust some people but we never do anything intimate in public, we don't even hug. It all started when we were sitting together on the train and I put my head on my boyfriend's shoulder and someone from school took a picture of us and then posted it on the Internet. Since then a lot of people have been harassing us, we told teachers but their warnings don't work or they don't give a damn about us. We plan to leave this country someday because the chances of things changing are small, but for now we just have to survive.

I regrets that I didn't just go away then, but I was stupid, shy and younger. I were thinking "It's not that big deal" "He is in my age, he is not going to something like that", but that was big deal for me. I can understand perfectly his feeling. I am not from Poland, I am from Italy but last summer when my boyfriend and I were in Warsaw I remeberer that while we were wolking in a mall near the palace of culture and science my boyfriend gave my a kiss, a young boy who were next to us looked us with disgusting. I understood that Poland is a very conservative country and I feel very sad when I hear stroy like this.

@MCADHD666 VOL2 pardon me? Its a different type of disgust, the man knew exactly what he was saying when he made that statement. Also its disgust not disgusting in the sentence he wrote

This was not good that they called you disgusting and you have the right to be upset but you also need to see the situation from another perspective. Your parents want to raise you correctly so you would have a good future. They want you to teach you to be a good and normal person with a husband and kids who will give the family descendants. You need to understand that the way you want to live is wrong and you will notice it with time. Christianity will lead you on the right way even if it is hard to do how god wants u to do it is worth it and you will have 100% a good life. If you reject god now you won't be happy with time. You will notice that something is missing in your life. If this moment comes feel free to go to Church.. I like talking with lgbt people if they are polite, even if I am against lgbt I would like to understand them and their story :)) Remember: the choice is yours

I can't agree with his statements I understand he has bad personal expierience but it is not representative for the whole society. I have many, many friends who are gays and many of them are occuping high social status and have zero prolblems with they every day life on the street. Even more in the country society is much more open than in a big cities where the life is more stressful abd you have bigger chance to encounter with patology like he described with his personal expierience.

Polish people are not bad,but a little slow, it took thousand years for Poland to accept Christianity(until10th centuryy) it will take time for them to accept gay rights.

France and Uk accepted Christianity in 5th or 6th century and in UK homosexuality was decriminalized in 1967 and it was never illegal in Poland.

Recognice you are part of a minority, and that most of people would not like to live the way you do. Keep your private life private, you don't care about straights, why would they care about you? Being the "victim drama queen" always attracts negativity. And support traditional values with space for exceptions like you. And be a contributing part in society, not a burden. Then they will value your diversity.
