In Poland, roughly 50% of the population does not believe that homosexuality is normal. As an openly gay man living in Warsaw, Tom Shay'an is reminded of this everyday.

Alicia Basically... I live in a town in western Poland (not that conservative compared to the east) and in the middle of the day I was walking down the town square. A grown man started yelling at me that he was gonna „beat the shit out of me" and that I deserve it etc because I was wearing mom jeans lol He considered it unwomanly and said something about my parents raising me wrong. He used like 19819 curse words and was very aggresive. Nobody reacted and it was in the middle of the day with many people around. I'm a 5'1 teenage girl...

In Poland people strongly believe that gay people have some characteristics 😅 like if man doesn’t have this really “sharp” and “male” look, does care about himself (like hair, skin, etc.) he’s considered to be gay or at least “not male”. That’s sad. For lesbians the stereotype is being a feminist 😅, being vegan, having colourful hair and/or short hair. Sadly we don’t have any sexual education in Poland so people mostly just don’t understand and don’t want to understand what is tolerance and why we all should be tolerant.

I go to the Polish equivalent of high school and I am harassed very often despite the fact that neither I nor my boyfriend do anything wrong. Their excuse is that it may disgust some people but we never do anything intimate in public, we don't even hug. It all started when we were sitting together on the train and I put my head on my boyfriend's shoulder and someone from school took a picture of us and then posted it on the Internet. Since then a lot of people have been harassing us, we told teachers but their warnings don't work or they don't give a damn about us. We plan to leave this country someday because the chances of things changing are small, but for now we just have to survive.

Germain Martel Just like gay people, the Muslims are a minority, what you just said sounds a little racist. Muslims face racism, gay people face homophobia and so on.Therefore if we want to make the world a better place we have to be more open to those around us regardless of their background, beliefs, race and sexual orientation. As a side note, I know many Muslim people that are very open minded. They know about me and we are good friends.✌🏻

I have been in Canada and i used to live in Poland, is about mentality, Canada is the opposite of Poland. Poland is a wonderful country but if you are gay feminine you might have troubles in the street sometimes, i say it because of my experience, the bus and the tram are dangerous places since all the attacks that i suffered took place in that situations, this country is not socially advanced regarding inmigration and gays.

And must say, that in the UK ,they are also not open to foreigner people anymore since there are too many inmigrants in the country and i saw in the news many times attacks to spanish people in England while these people were talking in Spanish, however in Spain, we do not bother people from other countries since we are used to it and we live from tourism however we are having issues from people coming from north Africa that are making trouble to the country and the situation is changing for worst

Polish guys are gorgeous. I had a Polish boyfriend when I lived in NYC. Funny thing is he hated America and eventually went back to Poland which broke my heart. Yes, I am a man if you are wondering, and gay. I would love to visit Poland one day but not sure if the gay scene is great. I don't know if they would like me because I am American, Latino, and gay. @@radoslawpazder7291 If any foreigner comes to any country - they need to behave and be respectful. That's just obvious. Also Poles should respect other people who come visit. What is not respectful is assuming that all Poles think the same and are the same. That is fortunately not true, cause that would make this country a real hellhole.

This reminded me of this one time, when my cousin (who I considered safty space), outed me, in front people who clearly weren't safe. They were saying stuff like "If you would have slept with me you wouldn't be gay anymore" and I wasn't sure if he will do something to me, or he was just joking. I regrets that I didn't just go away then, but I was stupid, shy and younger. I were thinking "It's not that big deal" "He is in my age, he is not going to something like that", but that was big deal for me. This guys are living in small city where I go to school, so I still seeing them sometimes and they accosted me few times. They know my name, they know where I'm go to school. It scaries me.

You are not the only one who suffered those attacks, i am from Spain and i used to live in Poland, i had sometimes homophobic attacks verbally in Poland in the streets and the public transport for me this was not normal, since in Spain rarely we have those issues, in Spain people do not care. I had to buy a bicycle to commute to work because i was affraid to take the bus. Attacks can happen anytime, but not always, depends of who's in the bus and if the person is under alcohol in which case it can be worst.

It makes me cry when I see what's happening in Poland. Sending lots of love to you and all the people who are being constantly stripped of their rights to love, to live and be their true self. They fear you because they're not brave enough to give love, to express their real needs. Hatred is easy, following the crowd is easy.. Standing against it is not! I am not from Poland, I am from Italy but last summer when my boyfriend and I were in Warsaw I remeberer that while we were wolking in a mall near the palace of culture and science my boyfriend gave my a kiss, a young boy who were next to us looked us with disgusting. I understood that Poland is a very conservative country and I feel very sad when I hear stroy like this.

This was not good that they called you disgusting and you have the right to be upset but you also need to see the situation from another perspective. Your parents want to raise you correctly so you would have a good future. They want you to teach you to be a good and normal person with a husband and kids who will give the family descendants. You need to understand that the way you want to live is wrong and you will notice it with time. Christianity will lead you on the right way even if it is hard to do how god wants u to do it is worth it and you will have 100% a good life. If you reject god now you won't be happy with time. You will notice that something is missing in your life. If this moment comes feel free to go to Church.. I like talking with lgbt people if they are polite, even if I am against lgbt I would like to understand them and their story :)) Remember: the choice is yours

I can't agree with his statements I understand he has bad personal expierience but it is not representative for the whole society. I have many, many friends who are gays and many of them are occuping high social status and have zero prolblems with they every day life on the street. Even more in the country society is much more open than in a big cities where the life is more stressful abd you have bigger chance to encounter with patology like he described with his personal expierience.

Recognice you are part of a minority, and that most of people would not like to live the way you do. Keep your private life private, you don't care about straights, why would they care about you? Being the "victim drama queen" always attracts negativity. And support traditional values with space for exceptions like you. And be a contributing part in society, not a burden. Then they will value your diversity.
