Burned out 10+ years ago. They let me work from home now, which is all I ever wanted. I still hate my job, but now I can hate it in my pajamas & spend the lunch break playing with my dogs.

I cried for 20 minutes before i left for work today. I think it's time to go.

44 years as a software engineer with the last 20 years at the same company. I started in a team of 18 sr. level software engineers, that over time was reduced to just me plus seven inexperienced off-shore programmers. My average work week was 72 hours, and I spent a good 15 hours a week re-working failed projects by the off-shore team. My VP changed my role to developing training materials, including CBT courses for off-shore programmers. The week after I started my new role, the head of Q/A called me asking why the Q/A error ratio for my old "team" dropped from 98% to 40% and upon discussion I was informed I would have to resume my old duties along with the new. I submitted my resignation letter 10 minutes after that meeting, turned in all keys and company materials, alerted system security to remove my access, left work to grocery shop and get on with my retirement.

When you ask those questions, it's time to go.

The commute also, that is my # 1 annoyance.

I put in my 2.5 weeks last week. That Wednesday when I told my boss was very emotional for myself. I love where I'm at, but I know that they are unable to pay me what my skill set is worth. I was only looking for a month, but this opportunity jumped at me and it is positive all around. I now plan to finish my next 2 weeks by wrapping up my projects and making sure our customers are supported during the entire process.

You literally gave me the courage to stand up for myself at work and leave. (I work in a trade) I was always the “yes man” and eventually got taken advantage of. I was overworked, stressed out and they never respected my time off. They would have me on call on Saturdays and just the anticipation of my phone ringing ruined my down time. I felt like I was always on go with no rest. Finally got fed up and moved on to a new company. It’s only been two weeks but I feel a lot better now.

I hate the fact that I LOVE my job. And I absolutely love the paycheck and HO perks. But management has turned it into pure living hell with their unattainable goals, "zero tolerance" policies, missed/late payments, pressure and abuse 😢💔

For me unfortunately it's all of the above. Havent had a 1:1 with my manager in 7 months. Company technology is bad, our help desk is a helpless desk, my team...hardworking but indecisive (part don't follow the standards, other follow them blindly and most interpret them differently), not adding value to me, no upward movement, company laying off the past year, under compensated, and morally cant work for oir client. Been job hunting for 8 months now, but the job market is in the trash right now. At this point just going through the motions and "working my wage" Sorry for the rant😢

There is one easy equation to know if you jobs sucks. There are 3 basic factors: - people (co-workers and managers) - what you do - how much they pay. If only 1 is right it's time to leave. If 2 are right (any of the 3) it's usually fine. If 3 are fine, you hit the jackpot. To put this in simple wording. You can do shit with amazing ppl for nice money. You can do great stuff with pricks for nice money. You can do great stuff with amazing ppl for shitty money. But you cannot do shit with pricks even for great money. This will hit you long term. Also you cannot do shit with great people for shitty money. And cannot do great stuff with pricks for shitty money :D. Easy. At the moment I'm doing total shit, for decent money ... and people vary from project to project. Some are amazing, some a pricks.

As someone who has high functioning autism I kept being put in work roles that weren’t right for me. I never felt I was doing anything meaningful or challenging, yet employers and coworkers were constantly abusive and HR was always useless. Sometimes working for others just doesn’t work

Last week I started to have panic attacks before going to work. This was always my dream job, but now, three years later I don’t feel I have what it takes to be here. I feel that, to grow and be recognized, I need to donate my whole life to it. Work everyday past working hours, work during weekends, abdicate a relationship to be able to move around for work… I’ve been giving my best, but it is consuming me. It is time to leave, I know, but after so many CVs sent and no interviews scheduled, I wonder if life agrees with me…

I left my previous job because of my boss mainly and her decaying health, because she began forgetting a lot of things, throwing false accusations, had terrible mood swings and so on (she later got alzheimers) I was the youngest and the most "spoiled" as in she wouldn't pick on me almost at all, while she insulted everyone else and even choked a co-worker in front of me (the co worker was retired and working because she needed the income and her grandson she raised had cancer so she felt like she had to take all that BS because nobody else would hire her 😞). I would constantly complain about these issues and would get a "what are you? Their lawyer?"... I threw my resignation one day after an argument and it was just like out of a movie. I am pretty proud of that still 😅. Here it is a 20 day notice so I stayed and trained the one that was supposed to replace me. I then realized that the main reason I wasn't picked on was because she couldn't afford to lose me. She asked me 3 times to stay and begged a co-worker to convince me to stay. The new guy was paid almost 3 times as much and he did max half the work I did... Life lesson right there. I was too blind to see my own worth, was overworked and underpaid greatly. My co-workers are amazing people (we are all friends still and keep in touch) and we helped and learned a lot of things from eachother (still do). That is one of the good things a toxic work environment can bring. However... I would not make the mistake of staying so long somewhere just because of the people. I work now for a multinational company, my salary is considerably higher, my workload is decent and I can afford to take some time off as well, whereas my previous boss would panic when I would ask for 2 days and she'd call me in both to ask about something... I am also working from home now, which is amazing and even got a promotion within like 7 months. 😊

I took a job that I almost immediately hated. There was a lot of back biting for everyone. I quit one week before my six months when I would have gotten extra pay. I simply could not take another week. I never regretted the decision.

As soon as my blood starts to boil, I knew to leave, at one year I used to quit at the end of the month just after payday so I had a month to find another.

Ive been working for 50 years. I'm just plain sick of people. I am sick of the people I work with because they are all useless children who do nothing but talk about sports and their favorite video games. They get promotions, I don't get promotions because My Boss's Boss's Boss does not like me (I commented to someone that I was not fond of the car he drove and he has hated me ever since). I have more experience than anyone else in the entire department, including the (quite useless) managers, but I can't even get an interview when I apply for other positions. I'm sick of fighting for respect that I never get, I am sick of fighting for opportunities that are always denied, I am sick of outperforming all of the other people but never get a raise or promotion. I just want to retire and be done with the hoard of fools. Sadly, I will be stuck at this job until the day I die because I simply can't afford to quit.

Held 2 jobs during 2018 and 2019. One was a full time year round factory position.The other was a seasonal full time assistant manager retail position. Factory position was 4 10 hour days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. But only 1 half hour break for the entire shift. Any employee that had testosterone in their body, was listened to. If you didn't, your head was full of fluff and stuff. I'm NOT stupid and I understood a lot of what was going on with bad parts being produced. The icing on the cake was when I got hurt, and couldn't continue doing the job I excelled at, the attitude from them was very cold. And very upset that I refused to go back to the job that hurt me. My retail job has treated me well and I have moved up the ladder that I'm now in a salary position. They have supported me on my upward journey. I also have found another seasonal position do that I can make this job that fulfills me work. The pandemic gave me the means to be able to depart from the factory life and be able to focus my life on my dream career.

Every time in my career when I have “jumped ship” I increased my salary by 25-30%. Not kidding. But sometimes stability and routine (not moving to a new city) take precedence.

My understanding (from what I have read) is your manager is often the reason that people leave their jobs.

I have been working in the same industry for 47 years. It took one job for me to figure out EMPLOYERS DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOU. I have switched jobs more times than I can count. I usually last 3 or 3 and a half years. Unless it's really bad then I leave sooner. I have been screamed at assaulted when my manager grabbed me by the arm. I have cried an ocean full of tears. I am currently working at my final job. I can fully retire November 8 this year. That is if I make it. The current company is systematically getting rid of one person at a time. There is one employee ahead of me that they are currently riding her to death. Then it will be my turn. But I have already decided I am not giving them notice. I plan on walking out during the busiest time of the year. My royal F you. People don't ever ever be afraid to leave the emotional abuse is just not worth it.

I am very focused on making things work and calling out things that can and should be fixed, especially when these won't cost anything. Therefor I am not great at spotting when I should just call it a day and find a better/different place to work for. The one consistent sign I won't ignore though if I am thinking about unaliving myself on a daily basis for more than a week or two. My sense of humour is quite dark but if these thoughts are recurring on a regular basis... it is time for a change

My fiancée had a love/hate relationship with her job. She loved the job but hated the "management" (picture yourself a manager that says out loud that she doesn't like "people"). She didn't have performance reviews for years, no flexibility whatsoever and she needed to drive 105 miles. Long story short, at my employer I saw a vacancy that would perfectly fit her. Made use of the referral program and she got instantly hired. Yesterday she told me, wished that I did this 4 years ago....

I didn't know how long past 'it was time' it was for me until I started my new job last week. It was hard to work full time and spend the energy and time to pursue the next one before quitting...but it was 100% worth it.

Yeah I knew it was time when my Rheumy found out I had mild Scoliosis and the stress was triggering it, it isn't even noticeable but it is located near a nerve and it hurts like a mofo when it flares. I was in so much pain I got 2 weeks of bed rest and a shit ton of pain killers that had me walking like a zombie. Work asked if I could still log in from bed because we are remote... Started updating my cv that day. They also made me login to receive a KT one day while on leave from meniscus surgery on both my knees.

There are certian things that are objectivly toxic, just like there are things that are objectively wrong in society (like murder), there are absolutely work place equivalents. Just because 2 sociopaths enjoy working together does not make them not sociopaths and not toxic.

I left my job not long after I was required to return to the office after working remotely during Covid. It was a toxic environment, in office, I was in for nearly 10 years,. After being home and not having the same stress with co-workers, I knew I had to go. You learn quick horrible people are nicer in e-mails, and team zooms, they’re only nasty in person, when no one else is around and there is no proof.

Once I start to experience Sunday dread, I start looking.

oh I have a good one, I would love you take on this... Lately I have been finishing some more elaborate and complicated tasks than usual. And the department director has been reviewing my work with comments as "very well done". However, this week, while I was discussing my ideias for how to approach a new task to one of my bosses, she replies "lately you've been receiving good praise for you work. I don't understand why..." I really don't know how to approach this...all I want to do is send her off and quit... to many of these attitudes, not worth working hard for this!! The problem, is that the paycheck and benefits are actually better than most jobs out there...

5 months ago, I was ready to resign because of a bad boss. Thankfully, the new department leader talked me out of it. He intervened. He took me out of that manager's team and transferred me to a different one. Now I can say I am doing better.

I like that work culture is changing in the US. Ever since the Dodge v Ford Motor Co. lawsuit, companies have been, more or less, required to focus on producing a profit for the shareholders. It is a terrible precedent that never should have been set. Obviously, shareholders deserve a cut of the profit, but a company should always be allowed to invest back into its workers and its products. Unfortunately, that legal precedent has compelled companies to care more about their profits than their employees and products. This new generation is pushing back on it though, and I am glad to see that happen. I also want to express the sentiment that, even as someone who believes in capitalism, that precedent was against the spirit of actual capitalism. Forcing companies to uphold a specific model is not free market behavior. A free market would likely shun such companies, but the fact of the matter is that we have no choice because the government made that choice for us.

I'm dealing with a manager who doesn't listen to me. Its a family owned business, recently got chewed out for asking him to address some toxic work culture caused by a family member of his. I haven't even been there a year, but already its messing with my mental health.

When the work issues can't be left that the threshold it is time to go.

As the main breadwinner for a family of three (now four) putting in my notice was nerve wracking, but my wife pushed me to start looking as I wasn't bringing my best to being a good dad and good partner.

Fun story: I gave a month's notice and trained my replacement. Last Thursday was my last day. Today, they texted and asked me to call them to help them scan and save documents. SCAN AND SAVE. 🤦‍♀️

When I was working in Personnel, I would tell the trainees, if you can't say anything nice about the company, maybe it is time to go. When I reached that point, I knew it was time to go.

Barring any legal roadblocks, September 4th 2024 could be the beginning of a lot of job hopping in the US as most non-compete clauses won't be enforceable anymore. So companies will have to start paying people what they are worth and treating the right, or their workers will be able to shift to the exact same kind of work for someone else.

Hmm took me awhile, (Decades), to really internil;ize a thing my Father said. 1. Try and get your Bosses job. 2. If yoou don't want your Bosses Job, perhaps you need to be a Hireable employee to another company. ( I am aware that not all job workers work for those reasons. Perhaps the reason is it helps fulfill some other goal in their life not related to their work life. I would work 2 jobs sometimes. one regular 40 Hours job then on my days off I would work a part time job to save a certain amount of Money. Then quit the part time job. This helped me get 90 days of Income saved up). I Guess having clear measurable goals helps to clarify if it is worth it to chose one course of action over another for me.

Especially for those that will need to maintain employment income if they were to quit would be asking themselves, “what color is their parachute?” And that’s not a plug for the book with the same title lol, but the book can be used as a good guide. When leaving a job, do you have the skills, network connections, aptitude, etc to get right into another position? Even if the job market is good, will a transition be quick enough without free-falling?

When I was coming home every night crying, because I had such a horrible boss, and one of my co-workers was always shouting at me, that's when I knew it was time.

I started at a new company. Only about a month in. Yet in that time. They changed the rules to where I and other people In the other stores can't engage with Co workers. Only with customers. We have to stand all day which isn't a big downside. But if we don't sell something no matter how hard we try then we risk a write up. I'm already burnt out from the sales and not being able to engage with the people I work with. If I do then I also risk a write up and or being fired. I do Doordash as a side job. But if something happens I can make enough every day to be fine but it's not a guaranteed job as it can become slow out of no where

For me, I started to look at job postings casually, mostly content with where I was and hoping for a promotion, especially after passing a big certification test. I noticed right away that the pay rate for my skills and geographic area are at least $20k more than what I was making. Alas, the place I worked denied me a raise bc it "wasn't in the budget" and then they started shutting me out (mostly due to a POS c-level who was a liar and a manipulator) so I kicked my job search into high gear and got out of there. During my notice period they announced that my replacement would make $20-45k more than I made, despite having the exact same responsibilities - wonder where the heck they suddenly found the budget for that? And also that the new employee would have the terrible person as their supervisor instead of my fantastic supervisor (bc terrible person is gunning for her too), so I guess that extra salary is warranted. In any case, I'm very glad to be in a new job that pays way better...probably more than they will actually pay the new person in my old position.

Also work on moon lighting so that you have multiple sources of income. Also your FU money should be a taxable investment account because otherwise your loosing your money to inflation and it really ought to cover you indefinitely combined with your side hustle. The reason I say indefinitely is that you should be able to drop your life style to the bare minimum and your dividends/gains/side hustle should cover you indefinitely, that should be the goal.

I love my job, but I might need to find another position because my employer is in contract negotiations with the client, and if I get a pay cut as a result after my pay hasn't kept up with inflation I'll be forced to go. Gotta keep food in the fridge and the expensive prescription kibble in the chihuahua bowl 😭 I'm trying to stay positive and look at this a a new opportunity, but this is the only job I've ever had that I haven't hated, let alone loved.

I apparently don't mix well with the masses plus I am a serial procrastinator so always busy though not accomplishing enough. But with a family to support, I tend to stick with employers offering stability and decent benefits. Fortunately the field I'm in pays well and since I've worked primarily for large companies in the hospitality industry the culture and perks have usually been good...........but I have colleagues - several who started at the same company I did - that are retiring now as senior directors and VP while I'll be working until I no longer can. Choices. Make them while you still have them. The only thing that matters in life is sharing it with those you love. I will never regret a day missed in a c suite..........but will always wish I had more days with my now teenage children. So, what does this have to do with this video? Any job that consumes most of your life is not worth it. I mean if you can do it while you are young to setup working for yourself at a better pace later that's great - but for a lot of working families - if not most - I don't think that is a reality.

I just got a promotion. My boss, who previously held this position and is training me, told me about the quarterly bonus. My counterpart added to the discussion. I was excited because I did not realize there was a bonus in this position. I've been with my company for 15 years. So, I reached out to HR today to get more info and was told if it wasn't in my offer letter, then we didn't offer it to you. OK, but WTF? I have been stewing all day. I'm not sure I can get over this. Help me understand. I am burned out and thought this promotion would be a refresher. I am now completely deflated. My motivation is at negative 11.

How do you know? When you go to sleep and dream of ways to get the a'holes you work with fired - it's time to quit.

Since I’ve been on sick leave I’ve been thinking and acknowledging that I should not work in a certain department at my job since my values do not align with the co-worker/manager who also has been manipulating and abusing to me. I asked for this thing: “please I am sick, please allow me to retreat from this work and allow me to focus on the work I do for my original team.” This is the one thing which might have made me to stay and just work in peace.
