Bad art advice that everyone thinks is good

There's lots of good art advice out there...things that almost everyone agrees is good. But Its not necessarily mandatory for everyone, and people shouldn't be forced to make art for any agenda. A community of 'selfish' artists creating whats true to themselves adds beauty and variety to the world. An ENTIRE community of artists catering to every single popular belief from the same perspective, creates a boring, lifeless world with no color. I'd rather live in the former.
Don't get me wrong, its great when individuals or even groups of artists create for a cause they are passionate about. However, too often people constantly nag every artist they see to create for X morally justifiable reason. The only job an artist must do is to be themselves and share their unique vision with the world. In the case that it is aligned towards a bigger cause, it should be completely up to their decision. Its similar to how trendy it is these days to claim that every 'influencer' who doesn't speak out against a topic, is in support of it. This needs to stop but first artists need to become aware of whats going on.

exactly what's been on my mind for the past two years. I love doing self portraits, or drawing characters that look like me, but then I feel like I'm not drawing enough white people, or men, etc. But when it comes to people who inspire me, I love that their art is the same thing every time, the creativity comes in the form in the ways those same things are portrayed, using perspective , composition, and lighting.

Same face syndrome can be a great time saver when you're working crunchtime. Plus there's nothing wrong with drawing what you've mastered and doing it well time and again. But it does bother me a lot when people draw art of existing characters and it has the same face as all their art and looks nothing like them... and/or their unique facial features are erased. I think the worst case of this I saw was a Maleficent art by a very popular artist that had the button nose and huge eyes+lips+rounded cheeks that was the artist's usual face style. On Maleficent, it just looked wrong. You could tell from the colours and design details who the character was supposed to be, but that was about it.

@@ShinyPrimarina yeah, I know, but there are rude people that do it in the worst form possible. I think if you don't like the art you should just scroll. If the artist specifically asked what do you think about his art, then you can say all what you want. For example, not that much ago, a japanese artist drew Encanto's characters, and a lot of americans started bullying him cause of whitewashing, it got to the point that he deleted his post. They felt entitled to judge his art, maybe if they said it nicely nothing would've happen, but that wasn't the case. So, long story short, all the latinos, joined forces to just make that people to shut up, cause there is nothing wrong with the way he painted them.

I understand that! I love me some good fanart, it doesn't need to be well drawn most of the time, but there was this time I saw an artist that draw Bakugo and deku from MHA very well drawn but it was two very alternative looking guys without any of the actual features of the characters, (deku didn't had the scars nor freckles nor the haircut and Bakugo seemed like a Latin guy both with a ton of piercings and tattoos and an undercut hairstyle) so I couldn't count that as a fan art since it could be just two random guys that happen to share the same name with those MHA characters I saved the image anyway because it was really cool but for me those two weren't Katsu deku

One I've encountered is definitely the idea of "did you draw that by yourself? you didn't copy? wow" this is especially harmful when you're encouraged to ignore reference and draw from JUST YOUR IMAGINATION no matter what.
@reginaldforthright805
@reginaldforthright805 2 жыл бұрын
No that’s good advice. People aren’t impressed by copying because they know anyone can do it. If you draw from imagination, you bring your own unique sensibilities to a work. If you’re using reference, you’re essentially a human photocopier. Depending on how much you rely on it, but most artists rely too heavily.
@reginaldforthright805

@Good For Nutting well, let me put it this way. A good artist doesn’t need reference at all because they understand perspective, light, color, and other general principles that allow them to invent whatever they want. You only should need reference as a student, and when doing exercises to maintain or broaden your skills. just think how much richer and more expressive art would be if people stopped using reference for everything.

@@reginaldforthright805 You're right. Velasquez, Rembrandt, El Greco, Bruegel, Leonardo, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso.. all shit. They all used references for basically all their work, such noobs. Now, here's something for you to take home: All that is contained in your "imagination" is just a catalogue of references you have accumulated since birth. So, there's no such thing as not using references for anything. Everything you think, picture, visualize, preform, is just an amalgamation of references. All the most innovative, alien, disruptive images you've seen, they are just a bunch of references put together, which you can easily trace back to its origins if you are old enough to have come across them before and IF, and this is the big IF, you are not a complete moron.
@reginaldforthright805
@reginaldforthright805 2 жыл бұрын
@@anameyoucantremember lol please don’t be ridiculous. There is a big difference between the kind of internal synthesis you are describing and copying reference, just like there is a big difference when writing an essay between synthesizing books and articles and plagiarism. Broadening the definition of reference to encompass everything only muddies the waters and is a childish rhetorical ploy to excuse lazy and incompetent hack work. Of all the artists listed, I think only Velazquez comes close to dependence on reference in his famous works. Leonardo would be the opposite - a clear cut example of someone who draws from imagination using constructed geometry which is only nominally similar to whatever model he might have in front in him.

For the same-face syndrome: One of my school's life drawing instructors who is very well-liked tells us all about the master he learned from who is now like in his late 90's, and our instructor shows us the master's figurative art and the reverence for this master rubbed off on us students. Then one day a student from another dept sees the master's work and says "All his faces look the same." And we are like, "How dare you -- ?" And our instructor says simply, "He's a classicalist..." Yoshitaka Amano has same-face whatever too, but that's because he *mastered* one face that looks gorgeous so may as well use it to its full extent, right?

To add onto the “same face” idea - there’s also a difference between having a distinctive style of face and same face syndrome, and I think a lot of people who comment about same face syndrome don’t seem to understand that. Yes, but the thing is that Disney can make very diverse facial features and it still looks like Disney. For example, one of the reasons many people appreciate Encanto is because the characters all have unique features. Rather than just the thin button nose, petite face shape, huge round eyes, thin eyebrows, etc. that they gave like all female characters, Encanto characters have a lot of diversity, and the style of the movie is still very clearly Disney.

Step 1- stop listening to what other people want you to create and start creating what you WANT to. What forms make you alive or inspired? What colors feel the most expressive to you? Are you more interested in landscapes or figures? Maybe abstract or surrealism? How can you tell YOUR story through your art? Maybe you can tell the story of feeling depressed or overwhelmed because you feel restricted by people telling you what you can’t do. Make it dark or colorful if you want, the main objective in my opinion of art is to make someone feel or notice something. Make a series doing all of the things others say you shouldn’t do, artists tend to rebel against the grain, so I say embrace it.

The idea of diversifying art is really interesting to me. I personally try really hard to draw lots of different kinds of people. I've just never been able to find satisfaction in drawing one kind of person. That being said, I don't think there's anything wrong with people having one thing they just really enjoy drawing. I think it's honestly a matter of where people find beauty. I have a wider approach, looking to find and represent the beauty I see in a variety of different subjects. However, some people choose to dive deeply into one subject, choosing to explore the vast amounts of beauty that one kind of subject can convey. Both have their own incredible uniqueness and importance and niether can objectively be set above the other (unless one is working in a field where expectations require one over the other). It's like the idea of a "jack of all trades" versus a "master of one." Both are valuable, and the decision to choose one path over the other is personal and should be respected.

Theres a lot to be said about how certain groups are overrepresented, how some toxic beauty standards are repeated in art, etc, i think those are all really important topics to learn about and talk. but when it comes to applying it to the individual it really falls flat and isn't right. we need to just let ourselves live, exist, and create as ourselves and not apply sweeping societal analysis onto indivudual artists. if we want more diversity, we shouldnt police people who are drawing whats important to them, we should instead continue to pressure broader political change to empower more people who are underrepresented in art to create art and be able to tell their own stories! its ridic to put all this pressure on random internet artists. support the art you want to see. as freedom spreads thanks to the internet, diversity is becoming more and more prevalent with each year so we should celebrate how far we have come, and keep pushing forward little by little. :) I love your stuff and your talks are always down to earth and insightful, thanks for all you do :)

The point about diversity kinda touches on something that I find very important as a transgender artist. Try googling "trans people in animation/comics/etc." and you'll get dozens of articles about representation on the screen, lots written about trans characters being written into popular shows and comics. Which is great!It's a wonderful thing that gender expansive people get to see themselves in media more and more. That said, it's frustrating that that google search doesn't also give you dozens of articles about the trans people *creating* art. There are plenty of us out there; all of the best trans rep in media I've seen has been in small indie projects by trans artists themselves, and this stuff just doesn't get the same number of eyes on it as the big animated shows on netflix or cartoon network. The answer to making more (and better) diverse content isn't to just write more diverse characters into your shows or comics without shaking up who's writing and drawing those characters. The answer is to get more of us working in your studios and telling our own stories.

The "you should draw this" is definitely entangled with audience reactions, which aren't really about the work. If they're saying that, it's most likely because they aren't responding to the work as it is, so they pulled a "quick fix" out of their head that deals with some bit of surface polish: "change this, add that, remove those". If the image already communicates coherent information in a clear way, the majority of the audience stops nitpicking about the technical stuff and instead gets excited talking about what the work just told them. It's true in all media. And that's distinct from genuine technical criticism, which tends to come from a career mindset of "for this type of job, you'll need to have a certain kind of skillset." But I'm not even sure the technical stuff is quite what it used to be. Everything in digital's a little more like programming: find the formula to make that type of image, then reproduce the formula. So, even though we still "draw", the overall workflow tends to be increasingly conceptual - knowing that something's possible counts for more than having deep experience in it. Like, having better draftsmanship speeds things up, but doesn't set you apart like it once did. And industry is aware of that dynamic and is following down that rabbit hole towards automation - they can design a different face on everyone, so long as they have some underlying CG work supporting it so that the animators don't have to master a lot of different faces and the computer does the hard parts. And if an AI can come in and make the final images based just on high-level instruction, the job changes into herding the AI.

It can make you feel like you’re never drawing enough of some things or too much of other things. This has been something I’ve been dealing with personally over the past year or so. I started drawing less and less and overthinking everything I made 😔 Taking some time away from social media to refocus my energy on making the things I want to make just for the sake of making them with no judgement has been so helpful 😌✨

Sometimes I get up in my head about my writing because basically all of my characters are bisexual men and all of my current WIPs are dark stories with the same sorts of fantastical elements. Visually, all of my character designs are solid (in my humble opinion), but on paper there are a lot of similar themes across their personalities and even sometimes their plots. But like, this is MY writing. If I want to explore the same sorts of themes in different ways, it's because those are the stories I need to tell. I don't need to tell the story of a Muslim woman in the modern day or how to disassemble and reassemble a car. It's not my place to write about those things when there are people who are much more equipped to do so. I love the sentiment made in this video that we bring diversity into the world just by existing as we are.

I get so tired of people telling other artists to be diverse or whatever, people can draw what they want, and if it feels like they are only drawing something because someone is telling them to (of course as long as it's not commissioned or something like that) then they aren't really being "diverse" they are just drawing something because people are telling them it's morally wrong to only draw people who look like you. Which it isn't, drawing people who look like you show your culture and things you relate too so other people can understand it.

Honestly, thank you so much for saying this. Ive heard countless times that same face syndrome is a bad thing in art and you need to change it, and, to be honest, it really makes me feel bad about my art. After hearing so much bashing of other artists and people saying that something is the only right way to do things and everything else is wrong, it’s nice to hear some reassurance

I don't get why people dog others about same face. I see Japanese artists with thousands of followers have simple anime art styles, and they have the same round anime girl face with eyes devoid of pupils. Their art looks so good and it's literally same face. Also I’m not dogging the style. I love it. My art style is literally the same, but less “refined.” (Narue_496 on twitter is one example of this style but not exactly the artist I’m remembering in my head).

There are so many artists I love that suffer from same-face syndrome. It's not a huge issue in most cases, but I do still believe in challenging oneself to work on moving beyond relying on building more or less the same face for every character. Sure, don't be so hard on yourself that it saps your energy to draw, but don't just settle and chalk it up to "style." That's throwing in the towel. And alright, nice haircut.

Its crazy the more people say same face syndrome is bad the more they dont make any sense. The reason why characters features look similar are because its a specific style a artist is trying to achieve or is going for. I'm a designer and a digital artist so now ppl saying your art suffers from same face syndrome is like someone walking up to the apple brand and saying 'your iPhones suffers from ''your products being consistent throughout to be RECOGNIZABLE'' syndrome. ITS COMPLETELY STUPID.

I just really like that every artist have this little touch they give unintentionally to their art. Sometimes it's their style, sometimes it's just the way they use brushes etc. Every artist has something that makes them unique, like you said, and no body can take that away from them. Some peopl don't think they have an artstyle but other people look at their work and see their style in it. It's strange that you can never predict how other people feel about your work but you know hoe you feel about it. And nobody can take that away from you. Even you when you're having a bad day

That part about asking yourself who you want to be has never meant so much to me. I use to spread myself so thin trying to please people that I would dread having to draw. Once I stopped trying to be everything and asked my self what I wanted I've never been happier drawing and my goals are slowly being met in a nice steady way (though I'll admit I'd like things to progress faster lol)

So grateful for this concise and practical advice, while I don’t draw humans typically, I can definitely apply your advice to my own work. In art school, I felt like I wasn’t edgy enough, and I would try to drum up some sort of angst to reflect in my work. All I achieved in doing this was creating a feeling of disingenuous discomfort in myself, and some pretty shit art. I ended up switching to business school (which I hated) and not drawing or painting for years, while this jittery pressure inside me built up as I battled needing to create but feeling like I wasn’t good enough. One day, I couldn’t take it anymore and just started drawing and painting things that I liked in the illustrative and bright way that spoke to me. I’ve found joy in creating images again, practicing my craft- and it feels like *me*. Your words resonate! Seeing this video today feels like a gift and a reminder that there’s room for all of us in art, particularly as I adore your work and really look up to you as an artist who does what he does joyfully and really, really well.

I feel like that with things like "how to draw". I have seen a lot of tutorials saying you have to paint or draw like this and some even saying if you don't do it like this, you are doing it wrong. Heck, there was a speed painting I watched over a year ago of a guy painting really realistic in ditigal and he did put down any solid colors, he went straight into the painting and painted in a way that someone who paints with oils would. He got so many people saying his vidoe was fake because he didn't do things in a certain order or didn't do certain steps, like placing down solid colors. How an artist gets to a finished piece shouldn't matter. Yet, people get so hung up on that. Samething with what people make. Let people make what they want to make. As for the same face syndrome, I think the only time it matters is what type of art style you are using. If it's a stylized, same face syndrome is going to happen. If you are doing something realistic and even more so, drawing a certain person and all your real life subjects look the same, I think then it's an issue. I think that is the only time same face syndrome is an issue. Other than that, most artist literally use the same face on thier characters, but change the hair or eyes and nothing else. I don't really have an issue with that and even more so if said person is animating or making a comic. It's just easier at that point to have a default face you can draw over and over again and just use different hairstyles. But this is just my opinion.

This view on same face syndrome really opened up my mind! I used to always think that same face syndrome was automatically bad because how was I supposed to create multiple unique characters if I only knew how to draw one set of facial features? This video made it click for me that same face syndrome is limiting for *me* and *my* goals, but that doesn't always apply to everyone else. I want to be an illustrator and concept artist, so it's vital for me to know how to draw many different body types and facial structures, and I really enjoy doing that! I consider my style overall to be quite feminine, and I prefer to use rounder shapes for the bodies of my characters. Someone could say "hey! you need to make your style more masculine because the men you draw are too soft!" But I don't need to listen to that because I know my style suits my own goals!

I agree with basically everything in this video besides the example of same face syndrome when it comes to Disney specifically. It's not like they're a small company who needs to scrape by like others. They have the resources to make different face shapes. And when talking about their success, Pixar's biggest hitter Encanto has made record breaking feats, all with different types of faces. So I don't really see why Disney can't do the same.

Being unique is all about being yourself You, are unique. Just like i am, and everyone else on this planet. Have you ever stumbled upon art that you didn't particularly enjoy? That is because it didnt fit YOUR style. When you draw a illustration, lets say portrait. One of the worst things you can do is get hung up on a aspect of it and think "That's not how *INSERT FAVOURITE ARTIST HERE* would do it" Make it your own, make it however you feel like making it. If you're a beginner, and are afraid of not doing a good enough job, do it anyways. If it comes out "Horrible" then you can use it to learn on your mistakes and then come back in the future to maybe give it another go. "Try to be diverse by being you" If anyone calls your art wonky or weird, they probably have no idea what art is about in the first place (There are a few exceptions where this does not apply, but that is your call to make at the end of the day)

Ahh thank you for making this video!! I needed to hear this. I’ve always had an inner conflict with myself thinking that I’m not being diverse enough because I always draw pretty people and that I needed to draw more “realistic features”. I always felt discouraged because I felt like I was being morally wrong or something for leaving out average looking people by drawing idealized, perfect features. After some self reflection I realized what made me fall in love with art - making my own characters look how I want them to look, and not what I think would others would approve of. I remembered that I’m doing art for my own eyes not for anyone else, so I should stick to what I want to see

The fact that there are successful artist who appear to have some of these "weaknesses," doesn't necessarily mean they are not weaknesses. Harry Potter is successful and well loved, but that doesn't make the world-building good. If your only point was that these "flaws" won't necessarily keep you from finding success, that is true, but it doesn't follow that everyone wouldn't be a stronger artist for growing past those "flaws." Sometimes you don't NEED to do something, but it would be GOOD if you did.

I've been trying on and off for a few years now to draw more after not doing it consistently for years - and it's only by drawing the same subjects that I'm able to figure out what works for me (that and like, consistency is key). learning all of these things have given me a major release of stress and negative energy but another thing, may or may not be related, is that no one is original. something that always holds me back from creating anything really is not being "special enough" or "original enough" but realizing that no one really is, and that even i personally love artists who aren't super duper original themselves has shifted my mindset. you dont have to be original, or really you can't be anymore, but you can be interesting or unique. dont let someone tell you you're unorigional or boring because thats for you to decide, do what you love and do what you want.

This was a great video that I really needed to cement some new ideas that have been mulling around in my brain. I'm just starting out on my "art journey," and there is so much information out there and so much underlying pressure. There's almost no widely accepted concept to just do art for arts sake. There's this pressure of "do it for the gram, how are you going to make money off of it, this art has to be good so other people will like it." Not everyone feels this way obviously, and there are a few bright lights in the community (you included) that say screw it. I'm coming to understand and internalize instead the messages of "spend time being creative just for creativity's sake" "your art is for you and no one else unless YOU want it to be" "let your art come out however it wants to" "give yourself time to learn and grow and enjoy the process" "it's not a race." Starting to approach art and creativity with that mindset has been really helpful. I've also had a few people lately help me realize that with my creativity, I don't have to BE anything to anyone, and it's really freeing. I can just do it for me and me alone. You see a lot of criticism over same face syndrome, and I used to feel the same way, but lately, I've been feeling like, "Hey, if you want to draw the same face for 4 years before moving on, NO ONE IS STOPPING YOU. or in my case, if you want to draw shaded circles for the rest of your life because you're good at it and it makes you happy, NO ONE IS STOPPING YOU." There's so much pressure to do something that other people will like or to chase after acclaim, or to even be constantly improving (which is not a bad or unhealthy goal at all) but for me, as a hobbyist, the purpose of my art is to have fun, relax, and confront/overcome my fear of failure. I'm just going to take it one page at a time and enjoy myself--that's one of art's great purposes! And I love that you kept bringing up the concept of "bring to the table what YOU can bring" and that you don't have to be anyone but yourself. It's so needed these days, and it was great to hear that in several different ways.

You hit the nail and hearing you speaking about all that helped me admit I was affected by such feedback. To name a few: 1) why are you using the same "formula" for the face, try to get the likeness of a person? 2) why are you drawing female anatomy only, it looks pervy? 3) and the last one is the worse, because I formed this idea in my head myself - painting is superior to drawing and I have to focus on colors and paint instead of drawing. But drawing with pencil and inks is my strongest skill and I have loads of fun doing that.

Bro I totally agree and its def something I struggle with from a teaching and critique perspective. Often it feels like some people are not okay with simply not liking something and moving on and I was some people. I understand the feeling of wanting to like something but sometimes it is what it is. There's no point in trying to make an artist do what you like. There's so many artists who I legitimately follow whose work I do not like to some degree. I want to like them but they do certain things that make me like almost scoff at the work. At the same time though it makes the work interesting because I can still see the value and skill in the work anyway. Its refreshing BECAUSE THE WORK ISNT ME OR SOMETHING I'D DO. That's definitely a new eureka moment for me. I'll find myself having a list of cons about pieces of work in various mediums and I'll forget to remember just like I have creative freedom, and exercise it every time I create. Others do to. Everyone's not going to think the same way you do about art. Its one thing to share what you do differently with others and another to try to make it seem like you're way is the right way overall when its not. I even had to catch myself with thumbnail of this video. FOR ME I don't like same faces on every character I draw. I purposefully try to practically make distinct silhouette of the head or face whether it be subtle or jarring. Its a part of the work, a very important part of it for me. But for some that's not where the sauce of their work is, they don't care about having different faces and that's totally fine. We all have different focuses and purposes to what we do.
