Very helpful video! I am suffering from the wrist pain and even shoulder pain cause by the trackpad. After using my middle finger, it does relieve some pain. I am still adjusting to it. Thank you so much for the tips and suggestions in this video.

Insanely useful video. I can't believe I'm using a broken NOMAD wireless charger as a wrist pad. Middle finger is taking a while to get used to but it reduced the pain in my arm as soon as I gave it a try so I will do my best to get past that learning curve. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in ergonomics on a rather niche Mac accesory.

Do you have a video to show how much of the arm should be resting on the table in front of the trackpad? Meaning, how far in front of one should the trackpad (and wrist rest) be?

@user-fh1vn5hu4w10 ай бұрын
Super informative video, I was stressing about the risks of using the trackpad since I find it so useful on a mac, your video helped a lot. One question, my trackpad is placed further in on my desk, so my entire arm is planted while my wrist is usually hovering, is that better or worse?

Agreed about the Macbook Pro trackpad. I have chronic significant pain now in the palm area right under the thumb next to the wrist from it. Any suggestions welcome. It even "cracks" a little when you move the thumb.
@vincentcjs Жыл бұрын
the area between my thumb and wrist started hurting after using the trackpad for ~ 2 months. I realised that i have to lift my thumb in the air to avoid touching the trackpad. in contrast, using a mouse, my thumb is rested on the mouse pad or on the mouse itself. Over time this can strain the thumb and cause issues. I switched back to my mouse and my thumb stopped hurting after a day. IMO the best placement of the trackpad is between the keyboard and yourself, just like the macbook's placement. that way you can rest your hands on the side of the trackpad and move your hand to the keyboard and trackpad quickly.

hi! not quite sure if this was covered here but in relation to using one's middle finger as a primary pointer -- does it follow, then, that for scanning/browsing (the typical two finger scroll), one will now use the middle WITH the fourth finger (next to the pinky)? or do we shift back to the usual (old) pointer plus middle finger for that? would appreciate any response to this. thank you!
@ergonmx5658 Жыл бұрын
If you can the index finger and ring finger are going to be the best ergonomic practice for two finger scrolling. The index finger should be avoided for gestures. Thumb and middle are best for zoom.
@Tobin_Dax4 жыл бұрын
Where do you rest the hand when you're not moving the pointer? Not sure if I should just let all my fingers sit on the trackpad, or rest my hand on the side. Also, do you use the middle finger for clicking as well? Thumb seems like it might make more sense.
@ergonmx56584 жыл бұрын
Rest your hand in a loose handshake position with fingers holding your hand in supination.
@alvaromartinezmateu21757 ай бұрын
Isn't easier to just using your thumbs to manage your cursor with the rest of the hands and arms resting, and then moving your hands, etc, to use the keyboard or make a gesture in the trackpad or touchpad in your laptop? Even for left-clicking and dragging stuff, you can still be using your thumbs.

i have a problem with the pinkie finger, as can see in the video yo never rest that finger and stay in the air for to long and thats evoke some kind of pain after long hours of work, any suggestions?
@ergonmx56585 жыл бұрын
I would either encourage you to "tent" your hands. If you are using the mouse with your right hand for example: with your hand in handshake posture, you would relax the meatiest part of your palm on the desk, then you will use your fingers to tent your wrist into a 45 degree angle (pronation direction) over the mouse. The resting contact will be right next to the bottom right corner. With the mouse isn't so important to keep your fingers from extending out as when you're typing so you can get range if you perch (understandable when using a trackpad). .
@xensieg5 жыл бұрын
@@ergonmx5658 Thanks, yes, i use a trackpad, my solution, was elevate the trackpad a few inches, then my small finger rest on the desk. appreciate your advice!

I'm looking at a trackpad vs Kensington rollerball. what you thought on these (I have an MX Master 3 and it causes me issue on my radial nerve and fore arm)
@ergonmx56583 жыл бұрын
The Kensington rollerball will typically encourage better posture and motions than a trackpad. I’ll talk about trackball mice such as the Kensington next vid! Thanks for the idea :) and hope to address your questions. I recommend having someone look at your technique and coach you through mouse use techniques and selection based on your specific condition. I can only guess what you’re doing based on what you’re telling me which won’t do it justice.

Hi, I have started to use a trackpad one month ago with new iMac and I today I’ve noticed a very hard pain in my hand. I am a doctor and the symptoms are obviously of ulnar neuritis. I understand your point about the wrist but my problem is probably linked with shoulder stress. Do you know any way to reduce this stress? Maybe to put the trackpad out of table? Thanks a lot.

Great review. How do you think about the ergonomics of Magic Mouse?
@junessarendon50586 жыл бұрын
I have one and use it on a daily basis as i am a graphic designer. Wouldn’t recommend it because it’s too flat. You end up putting strain on your wrist. I eventually needed to go to the doctor because of wrist strain. Couldn’t work for a couple days as i was in sooo much pain. Doctor had to put a cast on my hand.
@ergonmx56585 жыл бұрын
Magic mouse is also very hard to use properly! It has some of the features of the trackpad built in and so that's gotta be why they designed it so flat. You should apply the same ideas mentioned in this video but also be aware of how you grasp the device and to actively lift the hand when moving the device. I've gotta post on that.
