How long does it take for the pothos to grow? In today's video I take you from propagating a pothos from cuttings to how it grows after 48 days. I also show what to do if you experience root rot, mold and other issues. My pothos plant started to deteriorate in the middle of the video so I tried to save it using a few home remedies.

This video was 2 years ago so possibly you're not living in the same spot. I don't want to freak you out and not sure if someone has already mentioned this to you, but you really shouldn't have so much mold forming. You know the feng shui reason for plants is because plants tell you about your environment. Yours has a lot of moldy air. This happens. Some climates are like this. However, it's not generally ideal for health. If you want to get the mold to be lower, then you can add fans in your house and also look up other videos related to moldy air. You can then propagate your pothos to monitor whether the mold is decreasing. Because moldy air - for sensitive people - can cause all sorts of weird stuff from allergies to just overall less health, I thought I would mention instead of ignoring that in your video. Good luck with all your baby pothos.

Erica, you probably have discovered this already, but for the benefit of those watching this video for the first time: Since your cachepot (the red cover pot at the end) was significantly bigger than the net pot you used, adding a single layer of LECA at the bottom of it, and resting the inner basket on it, would've increased oxygenation and help curb root rot. I loved the video and already shared it with a cyberfriend who wants to rescue her late Granny's pothos!

I think what happened was that the cuttings used up all oxygen in the water and suffocated. Like others recommended, transfering to soil early is probably a better option. I do appreciate your hydroponic take on it when potting, and I personally have gone that route. But the problem is, as soon as the the roots find the reservoir, they will build up a "nest" there, and that part of the roots will sooner or later rot (still water, no additional oxygen). This problem can be solved if you do a proper hydroponic setup: either having a pump to circulate and oxygenate water or using kratky method. Anyhow this much maintenance only makes sense with some other plants that are picky with growing condition, pothos is not one of them. Regardless, great video showcasing what could go wrong with propagating cuttings in water. You really pushed the limits here, good job and thank you!

This is overly complicated and the long time in water makes it so likely they will rot or grow mold, just as they did. Put cuttings in water. Once they have roots at least an inch and a half long, put them in soil. No need for rocks or fancy pots (though drainage and a saucer is always helpful). Give low-to-medium light and water whenever soil dries out. Easy peasy. Pothos are hardy suckers. The one I propogated in November is still making lots of new leaves and very healthy despite my cat ripping pieces off of some of the leaves (it is now higher up!).

I think the mold happened because it’s been rainy weather and I didn’t have enough air circulation around the plant area. Mold can happen in soil as well. I’m not completely sure of the cause, but if it happens the best thing to do is cut off the moldy areas as best as possible. 😊

Thank you! Actually I haven’t fertilized this plant yet. You can try using super thrive (I linked it in the description) but usually I don’t like fertilizing plants until around 6 months old. I’ll use whatever fertilizer I am able to get (usually miracle grow but any nitrogen fertilizer will do). For pothos, they’re not heavy feeders on fertilizer, so there’s really no need and I find sometimes it harms the plant more than it actually helps it grow. but it’s good to try to experiment with what works best for you! I saw this video and decided to grow Pothos in water. So I took cuttings and put them in water. After three weeks, the roots had developed and even a new leaf had emerged. I decided to fertilize it now, so I ordered some NPK 20-20-20 fertilizer. I took half a spoon of fertilizer and mixed it with a liter of water. Then I changed the water with the fertilized water and even sprayed some of it on the leaves. The next day I noticed that the tips of the roots were starting to brown. I don't know if this is due to the fertilizer, but I'm really worried. The leaves seem to be healthy, but the roots are turning black. I think this is root rot. Can you please tell me what to do? Give it some more light! And try changing out the water to filtered. Usually after 3 days should have small roots already if it’s getting proper light ☺️

Thirty percent of the roots should be outside water. Your water level too high.

not enough air circulation, i bet. i doubt it’s a disease. you needed to wash out the jar very well, and the stems. hydrogen peroxide would’ve probably taken care of this. also, cutting the stems and not allowing them to callus can cause this.

Thanks for the suggestions! I did add hydrogen peroxide later on and now I do it with most of the plants I have in water. ☺️

IT TAKES ABOUT 7 TO 10 DAYS, AND IT TURNED BROWN, BECAUSE YOU PUT THE STEM IN THE WATER, YOU NEVER DO THAT JUST THE NODES, AND YOU CHANGE THE WATER EVERY OTHER DAY SO IT DOES NOT GET SLIMY
