There has been a little commotion surrounding the relatively popular KZfaq creator sponsor, Established Titles. People have started to think they might be a scam. My only problem is that it took people this long to figure it out!

Nah, it was obvious... and pretty funny. The "lords" loved to gloat about their piece of paper. I actually have noble blood dating back over 700 years to Scotland and England. All honorary ties ended up getting cut after the War of The Roses... we were on the wrong side. That said, who in their right mind wants to be a lord? It's just bragging rights that you were born into a pampered inbred favoring system.

My problem is that we know people are dumb enough to fall for this cause they fall for those Indian gift card scams all the time. Pushing this on people feels akin to pushing people towards a scam artist who knows they're taking advantage of people. Everyone is in one the scam except the people being scammed. That's why laws exist to protect dumb people from intelligent fraudsters who would scam them out of money. This is no different from stealing from old people who don't understand you don't need to go out and buy gift cards for Microsoft.

@crispybatman480 The lord shit is the main part of the scam and the most important thing. People didn't fall for this scam because they wanted trees planted. If people wanted to plant trees they'd just donate to a charity that does that. Everyone who bought this shit was interested in the cringelord title. All the marketing was based on lying saying you'll own land in Scotland and that this somehow makes you a lord. I saw dozens of these ads and I don't remember any mention of planting trees. All of these ads start by the youtuber pulling out the piece of paper doing the soy face going on about how they're officially a lord now and you can become a lord too.

When I was little I was really into wolves; not like...sexually...I just thought they were cool-- and I hate that I just felt the need to clarify that. ANYWAY, I liked wolves, and for many years of birthday and Christmas presents, I would get a piece of paper with a picture of and information about a wolf that a family member had "adopted" on my behalf. Even in my r3tard3d 8 year-old brain, I never once thought that I had actually adopted said wolf, and could show up to whichever wildlife conservation that held it and say "hello, I've come to collect my son": even at that age, I had the understanding that it was simply a ploy to get people to donate to the wildlife conservative, and the "adoption" papers were a cute gimmick to give as a gift. So I actually watched the 20+minutes in question, and this was basically my reaction to the first 2/3rds. If you thought this was actually making you a laird you need to sue the school district you attended. The last point seemed substantial though - they seem to share AH's confusion regarding the word 'donate.' One might easily realize that the 'Laird' talk was puffery or novelty value only while still believing a portion of the proceeds was going to a good cause, rather than straight into a Hong Kong bank account.

It's actually more like those Indian scammers who con old people into buying gift cards and giving them the codes. They are frauding people out of money just the same. Just because some people are smart enough to realize it's a scam, doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of people dumb and/or old enough to fall for it. Crazy how many callous people there are out there who don't understand or care that the average person is an idiot capable of falling for one scam or another and that's why we have laws to protect them from more intelligent people with no morals or scruples who would gleefully take advantage of the feeble minded. People who would happily do that are kinda sleazy scumbags and will likely rationalize their awful behavior in one way or another, but it doesn't change that they are awful people who take advantage of their fellow humans for personal gain even though they don't need to. It's a choice they make cause they can and want to.

I think the best comparison is when Penny Arcade did a Kickstarter a decade or more ago. Their lowest tier was "we'll shout your name while we chase a duck" - obviously it was their whimsical way of saying that you wouldn't get anything for your donation. That is until Kickstarter told them that they'd promised it, so they had to deliver on that promise - which is why there's a 2-hour video of one of them walking slowly after some confused ducks for 2hours reading pages and pages of random usernames. IMO, that's why people feel "scammed" about the titles, they always knew it was BS, however they expected the company to at least just do the token gesture effort of upholding their end of the BS/fun-silliness. The whole thing just comes off as just a step too cynical.

To be fair, the UK has a metric ton of weird archaic laws that are technically still on the books but overlooked or overruled in practice. The scam works because it's not out of the realm of possibility that owning a foot of land would entitle you to some completely meaningless title. And I suppose the other reason it works is people's misguided faith in official-looking forms and documents. Even if it were true that owning a foot of land made you a Scottish Laird, unless you live in Scotland you'd still be paying for a fancy piece of paper. You can call yourself a lord, with or without an official deed; people will just consider you a weirdo for it.

You have to dig DEEP into the fine print to learn that, not only can you NOT call yourself a "Lord" as Scottish law specifically prohibits this when purchasing such small amounts of land (which you have to learn by cross-referencing actual Scottish law), but you're not even buying land in the first place. *You're spending $50 - $200+ for them to **_MAYBE_** plant a tree on a plot of land they allegedly own.* Oh, and for the piece of paper.
