Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:
- a frontal impact test, 50% of the width of the car is striking an oncoming deformable barrier, also travelling at 50 km/h
- a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid full width barrier
- a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door and the robustness of the centre airbag is evaluated
- a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole.
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled as well as AEB pedestrian and cyclist tests.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking car-to-car scenarios, occupant status monitoring (including seatbelt reminders), lane support and speed assistance technologies.

This is some really advanced AI, it realized it had to hit the one cyclist in order to get exactly 69% in the test. Nice

Very strong car. The windscreen did not break in the side pole test. I also noticed side airbags in the rear seats. Well done Ford. A smaller and more affordable version of this car is needed for global markets.

@Sink we're living in an age where giant companies are no longer willing to play around with creating new brands and identities and would rather use brand recognition from an already existing line to make products under. we saw this with the mitsubishi eclipse too, and it's not exclusive to the automotive industry either.

Not smaller just a smaller battery and minor adjustments for some weight reduction! I would want all the boron steel this car comes with for safety reasons, this car has an incredible weight but the roof has the strongest roof load rating of any EV in IIHS test and that while factoring in the cars weight!. That's apparant in the side pole test. And rolling over is one of the deadliest ways of crashing. Although the high weight is a danger to other cars or the driver if they meet another similarly heavy vehicle so something has to be done with the weight, I would buy this car with 4/5 of the range really... But for US market they drive long distances so to replace a Ford on the US you need long range I guess....

Compared to Hyundais, this car is strong and rigid, it is worth 5 stars, unlike those Hyundais. Side pole test, it even seems, like it hits much lower speed and damage is almost none, compared to Hyundai tests.

Rigidity is not exactly a good thing in a crash. It means more of the kinetic energy is transferred to the occupants. The last thing you care about in a crash is the condition of the vehicle, the only thing you care is the end result of the occupants. Both the Ford and the Hyundai did very well doing the latter. Tests were done at the same speed for all vehicles.

is it just me, or does it look like the airbag inflated twice? 0:48
@HemiPowah
@HemiPowah 2 жыл бұрын
Dual stage airbags do that. It's usually only a few ms apart so it looks like a continuous inflation but other times like you see here its staggered.
@nickbien
@nickbien 2 жыл бұрын
@@HemiPowah Oh ig it's just the first time I noticed that. Whats the point of having two inflations milliseconds apart?
@HemiPowah
@HemiPowah 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickbien There's a few reasons for this actually. Modern "advanced" airbags try to vary inflation speed and power based on impact severity and whether or not the occupant is belted in, etc. Two inflator squibs fired together equals higher bag pressure, a slight gap between them can provide lower pressure and a longer duration for the bag to provide some amount of protection.

Anyone notice the front airbag deploy, deflate, then redeploy? Interesting!
@borisdemelo
@borisdemelo 2 жыл бұрын
Most airbag systems in modern cars have what’s called “second generation” or multi-stage airbags that can control the rate of inflation based on the severity of the impact. It’s design to avoid injuries caused by deploying at full pressure in one go. So what you’re seeing is the explosion being controlled in stages to keep the airbag at a certain peak pressure.

@@borisdemelo Yes, I know about Dual stage airbags. However this is the first time I've seen an airbag in any of the safety institutes videos do it.

How many cars are destroyed as part of this process? And what happens afterwards to all the mess? Totally understand the importance of car safety but is there no way of doubling up on tests to save a fortune on cars (while obviously still saving lives).
@spacebound1969
@spacebound1969 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately you must test one at a time so as not to damage test results. However these cars are likely sent to scrap yards afterwards and most components that are undamaged are likely able to be saved and resold. The battery and any directly unrepairable components (windows, bodywork, etc) are the exceptions.

Would the frontal crash test give a different result when you have heavy objects in Frunk.?

Good question. I would guess that a dense mass object with a tight fit in the drunk would aven impact on how much / fast the front crumble and take up forces... On the other hand, here is no heavy engine... But really good question 👍
