Ah, I think many Portuguese students learning English fall for the "constipação" one as well. It was always an awkward moment when the English teachers didn't speak Portuguese and had no idea it was simply a false friend. 😅

There are many false friends between Spanish and Portuguese. For example the word "salsa" (parsley) in Spanish means "sauce" (molho in Portuguese). Also the word "espantado": in Portuguese it has a positive connotation whilst in Spanish it means scared, ashamed or appalled. As for my experience, I've used many of them, for example, at a fish market in Portugal I asked the clerk to give me some fish and I asked him to clean it. He told me "Sim, vou tirar as escamas do peixe". I wasn't very experienced at the time, so I only heard "tirar... peixe" (to throw away in Spanish) and I was very confused.

It's not really a false friend example but I find it pretty funny. One time I say to a non-portuguese friend I invited over to my place "Se quiseres podes descalçar-te" (which means "you can remove your shoes"). She pauses and looks at me completely surprised: "I'm sorry, what?!". She thought that I meant "You can take your pants off" because pants in portuguese is "calças", but the verbs "calçar" or "descalçar" only apply to putting on or removing shoes, respectively. A bit of an awkward moment there but we laughed so much after 🤣

Additives to food...aditivos...In Canada, we say that preservatives have been added to the food...it would be a mistake to say in Portuguese that "preservativos" have been added to the food...that will definitely cause a stir and cause people to lose their appetites. One common false friend in the opposite direction is when Portuguese people want to translate the portuguese word "resumo" and say "resume", when in fact they should say "summary", for example. People from other nationalities get really confused when they hear a Portuguese saying something like "so, in resume, this is what I mean...".

While "pretender" and "particular" are correctly used as your examples, I do know I have used those words as well in the sense of the false friend, so watch out. "Pretender" has many uses, one of which is also "to fake/pretend", granted it is more uncommon. "particular" is also a synonym to "específico" which is basically the same as "particular" in English. So while listening one shouldn't assume outright that's what they mean, I, as a native Portuguese, would not misunderstand should they be used in those "false friend" contexts whatsoever.

Ice cream is "sorvete" (not "gelado") in Brazil. "Gelado" means "chilly", "icy" in Brazilian Portuguese.

This video is about european portuguese (it's in the title) and not brazilian portuguese. Here in Portugal the right word is gelado and not sorvete. The word for Icy" is also "gelado".

In portuguese the word "gelado" means ice cream: "Queria um gelado por favor!" (noun), but it also means frozen: "O rio está gelado!" (adjective). "Sorvete" is an ice cream made of water and fruit. 👍

@@Confetisdesigns Ok. But don't ask for a "gelado" in Brazil. People won't understand that you're asking for an ice cream. As a wrote above, 210 million Brazilians use the word "sorvete" for ice cream. I know, this video is about Portugal Portuguese (spoken by 10 million people). So sorry if the word "sorvete" upset you.

Não sei se é uma coisa minha, mas a palavra "before" sempre me sugeriu "depois" quando é precisamente o contrário: "antes".

I think no one mentioned proposion and proposal, meanining proposta de negócio and declaração ou pedido de casamento (wedding proposal). Very common mistake.

Hi Liz, I don't know where you learned your Portuguese but you are over emphasizing the sh sounds in the s. I'm native Portuguese speaker and I would never never use the sh in the word costume and many others like it.

Another false friends: i) "atual" which means "current" (and not "actual"). "Actual" translates to "real", "verdadeiro" in Portuguese. ii) "eventual" which means "casual", "probable" (and not "eventual"). "Eventual" translates to "final", "último", "derradeiro" in Portuguese.

Where did you get those meanings? Something "actual" means "recent/in trend". And "eventual" means "ocasional".
