@@hiqhduke - That made my ears perk up too, but after I replayed it I took it to be a non-literal usage of the word business. I agree Dr. Lynch is a gifted speaker who explains his work at a level someone with a liberal arts degree can understand.

@@hiqhduke Have I missed a controversial issue about the business aspect of science? Point me to an article that covers what you’re talking about. Not being snippy or looking for a debate, I just don’t understand what you’re referring to. I think scientific research does generate profit and depending on what entity is funding it, it could fall under the category of a business. Still, I don’t think Dr. Lynch was using the word to drive home a specific point in this instance.

@@eduardolima6191 There's a superiorly produced podcast in Sweden where I still am alive, which comments regime media. It has become one of our largest alternative media. With 1/100,000 voluntary funding of that the regime media takes from tax payers. Production quality is important. I mean, I wouldn't go to the cinemas or to a concert if I didn't think it was one of the most bestly (oh, English!) produced things to see. There are so many things to choose from for the audience. The question about neutron material being lifted away from the star in the exact words you used was exactly what I've been wanting to know for as long as I've known about the concept. Thank you for asking that question. Similar questions I've always had: black dwarfs, leftover iron cores, does the gravity crush the surface into being smooth? In similar wildly hypothetical wording, if you could like stand on the surface of a black dwarf would it be smooth or not? If it's crushed metal would it be reflective if you shined a flashlight while standing on the surface and could somehow see, would it look like a mirror or just like metallic rocks or something else? If one could just somehow stand in the first moments of the big bang that we know about without harm, what would that plasma feel like; like a gas you could easily move through, something you swim through like water, or something else? I hear the universe was opaque and there was no light so you couldn't see, but also that the plasma was orange? Does that mean hypothetically if you had some light it would be like swimming in bright orange heat? Or just open space gas that's hot? Point being that as someone with this weird thought process, your question was so appreciated as was the answer.

One thing that is kind of puzzling is when I hear how hot a pulsar is, and how dense a pulsar is, is not heat atoms moving? Does this mean, even how dense a pulsar are, there is still space to move for the atoms? If that is the case, when there is no more space for atoms to move, will then an object then cool down and be ice cold?

That was the old 300 foot telescope at Green Bank, where Dr. Lynch does his research. It collapsed in 1988 when a component failed and compromised its structural integrity. Did someone say pulsars?!
@martinalladin8981
@martinalladin8981 Жыл бұрын
As far as what is actually generating the pulsar beams, I'm simply a layman so forgive me for any ignorance I might exude, could it be possible that in the heart of the pulsar itself, gravity is so intense, that it warps the fabric of space-time so much that in its interior that fabric actually folds back on itself and some form of quantum tunneling takes place. Meaning, the Jets are possibly produced by the fabric of space-time curving back on itself overcoming its version of the Culban barrier, and some form of zero-point fusion is occurring in the core?
@mrbamfo5000
@mrbamfo5000 2 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't space based radio telescopes be ideal? The bigger overall size of a radio telescope makes it "see" farther and clearer, which is why they sometimes link multiple earth bound radio telescopes together. So if they had several of them out at Lagrange points, and link them, they'd have a huge telescope. While I'm for anything moon, it seems like it would be much simpler and now with reusable rockets, much cheaper, and an overall better product because if you link 3 of them up you'd have a huge radio telescope.

Another great episode. I have to admit, I wish I was better versed in the actual science and mathematics behind these conversations to better understand them. I think your ability to get your guests to explain these complex concepts in a way that the average person can understand must be related to your being a science fiction author. The best authors are able to distill vast amounts of information in ways that their readers can understand it and see the story in their minds. Being lost in a good book should feel like you're watching a movie rather than reading. I think it must be a very similar skill to be able to get guests to distill their ideas into something more easily understood, but without losing the impact of their work. Speaking of writing, I wonder, what's your thoughts on the new Dune movie? Are their any particular writer/series that has influenced you the most?
@JohnMichaelGodier
@JohnMichaelGodier 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric. I haven't yet been able to sit down and watch the new Dune yet. You'll see why over the remaining days in October over on the other channel. I've been busy. I hope to get to it in early November. As to writers that influenced me, the biggest influence is Arthur C. Clarke. I've managed to sort of follow his career model in that I started by writing hard sci fi, but then branched into KZfaq. He branched into television shows like Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. Other influences are Carl Sagan of course, but also James Burke, and with interviews Art Bell, Dick Cavett, and many others. With voice delivery, I can credit Orson Welles, Bell again, and Rod Serling. So there have been a lot of influences on my mix of style across the board.
@usnairframer
@usnairframer 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnMichaelGodier Certainly a who's who of sci-fi writers and influences. Without a doubt the one that stands out to me is Carl Sagan. I see people like you, Isaac Arthur, Brian Keating, David Kipping, and others all carrying on his legacy of bringing science to the masses in a way that's fun and relatable. I remember watching reruns Of Cosmos growing up and wishing to be a part of that world and see the stars. Unfortunately, that never happened for me, so now I just fix helicopters and paint aircraft, but I can still feel like I'm a part of it by keeping up to date with channels like this and your main channel. Another question, that was not addressed, why is it anything left after such a star explode? How come not everything disappear out in space? And, all those neutrons that will explode by themselves, how come they do not use the opportunity to explode during the explosion? I guess the diameter of the star is much larger during the explosion and then the gravity lower? In my opinion a good opportunity to simply explode then?

So how sure can we be that the universe is mostly empty? The reason I say this is because if we currently have reason to believe that it is infinite then there must also be an infinite amount of matter making the universe far from empty. Also does vacuum fit the definition of nothing?

I imagine the top layer of material would not be neutronium, as it would be under much less pressure. In the way that water at the surface of the ocean is under much less pressure than water deeper down.

Ahem. I just realized. For no particular reason. I was just laying on the ground listening to this, while pondering the internal structures and fluid dynamics of a star, looking up at a cloudy sky. Every single star's core is a slightly oblong-spherical black hole, surrounded by 6 perpendicularly arranged and counter-rotating megavortices shaped like footballs*[where most of the nuclear fusion actually takes place], giving rise to concave hexagonal star patterns at the north and south poles(in stars, this pattern would most likely only be detectable by slight variations in magnetic field strength, however in some gas giants, it's a plainly visible in regular light spectrums). I could be dead wrong, but it seems intuitive. If I'm dead right and some snobby physics major wants to go "duh, such n such proved that already", just know that I'm not a physics major, and idk who you're talking about. I just intuited and interpreted a vision from the ether is all.

On the subject of aliens. Wouldn’t there have to be a planet exactly the same as Earth to produce something like us? Not just geologically but also anthropologically with exactly the same planet history? Seems unlikely. Maybe every life form leads to human consciousness eventually? Again seems pretty unlikely. Ouamuamua is very interesting though I’ll admit!
@mrbamfo5000

Consciousness may only be "human" because we're the only species we know of with it. But, maybe it is what life reaches for. There are people that believe there will be aliens that are humanoid in form because the form itself is an efficient design. There's a name for this theory, don't remember it though. I don't buy it, while there could be other humanoids out there, I'd think gravity would have a large impact on body type.

@@mrbamfo5000 Thanks for the reply! Good post. Yes I agree. We are under an immense pressure from our atmosphere and Earth's gravity. I think humans would be unrecognisable after 1 generation if we went out into space. I would love to hear your view on Avi Loeb's claim that Ouamuamua was in Local Standard of Rest so we can't track it's origin?
