What do you think is orbiting Tabby's Star?

Frustrated. Because our current technology can't confirm whether or not it is aliens or dust or a massive f***** planet. Or maybe something in between. I can't remember correctly which of your guests when the subject was something among the lines of it being 'impossible to travel such distances to verify' he replied that he doesn't believe that because believing it would assume we understand everything about physics and we do not. I hope someday we can unravel the mysteries of the universe and travel far beyound our galaxy.

What about an ice-shell planet with geysers spewing water vapor, or a swarm of large comets? Would that account for the lack of an infrared signature? Those possibilities have been considered and are problematic, I know. However, it’s my shot in the dark guess. I suspect something is wrong with how the data is being interpreted.

@@alvarofernandez5118 The nickname given to the UAP phenomenon encountered by a number of US naval fighter pilots and radar technicians in the 2004 Nimitz incident. Pilots encountered objects that could seemingly instantly accelerate to hypersonic speeds, engaged in signal management (active jamming), among other things. The objects themselves supposedly looked like oversized tic tacs as they had no windows, no wings, no rotors and no exhaust. It's considered one of the most credible UFO/UAP events to ever occur, and it is a major factor in why the US military started looking into UFOs/UAP again and eventually established an Office for investigating UAP. It was the attention generated by the Nimitz incident (and another bizarre incident from 2015 called the Roosevelt incident) that grabbed Avi Loeb's attention and lead to the formation of the Galileo project. Very weird story. Here's a pretty good summary, though a LOT has occured with this story since the video released, such as confirmation from the pilot that the object in the first video was lost due to jamming and NOT due to losing signal lock: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idaVhtNymMuZZnU.html Video talking about the jamming debate in regards to the Tic Tac video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y81dYNOgqM7daH0.html

@@JohnMichaelGodier I'm a bit earlier in the Gen-X generation and by the 80s there was already a pretty widespread "internet" that was being used by junior high kids on up to adults. In the mid-80s a bunch of my friends (we were all in our pre-teens and early teens) were regularly on message boards and transferring small files (very slowly) with each other. I never really got involved in it, but when a more approachable internet kicked off in the early 90s when I was in undergrad it wasn't really a surprise or even all that different. The main difference, and this was really important, was that it was vastly more accessible and easier to use.

What if the object orbiting is shaped like a giant dinner plate that is also spinning on an axis. Occasionally when it comes between us and the star we see the flat portion blocking more of the star. Other times we see it on edge, still there but blocking less of the star. Its axis could be predictable too. Just a thought.

Wonderful episode! Loved it. I like the idea of listening to the star in radio bands. Like you said, if there's an enormous industrial effort to mine the star then one would think a great amount of communication would be involved. But what if we detect nothing? Could that mean that radio communication is old fashioned? We currently don't believe quantum entanglement can be used for communication, so the idea of a futuristic "emissionless communication technology" seems implausible at this time. So whether the hypothetical aliens are using radio or laser coms, it seems like we'd be able to pick up some kind of emissions resulting from their communications.

An Error bar is constructed around a data point by analysing the measurement uncertainties associated with the equipment and instruments used - including any possible human sensory uncertainty. All the individual measurement uncertainties are summed to get an error for each variable or parameter. This is why you can irregular error bars across the range of data points.

@PetraKann
@PetraKann 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnMichaelGodier I was bamboozled by errors bars when I wrote my thesis. In fact on an 3 axis graph you can construct a 3D error space (usually a cube or rectangular cuboid). Without error and uncertainly analysis quantifiable measurements and data are essentially meaningless. It would be like saying I am 1.9m in height plus or minus 4m or measuring the weight of a bacterium using a bath room scale - you would get 0 kg plus or minus 0.1kg (or whatever the accuracy of the scale is). This was the case with the early measurements of the Cosmic Background Radiation. The equipment and detectors were simply not accurate enough and lacked the precision/sensitivity to resolve these tiny temperature differences in the sky. I hate statistics - it can validate your measurements and support a model and it can also expose it as nonsense. Keep up the good work. Your channel is one of my favourites on KZfaq - one of a kind. The question I have since this does seem to be something repeating, implying orbiting, why would these peaks a small part of the orbit apart not be merging due to shared gravity over the decades. These are not in some semi-stable orbital configuration like Lagrange points. Something similar to saturn's shepard moons maybe? The changes in the size of the dips makes me wonder if the period seen might be a beat frequency between different orbits rather than a single orbit/source of dust. This could potentially explain the multiple dips that don't change relative position and the differences in how deep the dips are.

There is the rather terrifying aspect that it could really be a dyson swarm under construction still even if unlikely. Such could quickly be used as a solar system annihilating death beam. Potentially resulting in everyone else who sees it to build their own as a deterrent leading to a galactic scale MAD situation. Intellect tends to predict aggression more reliably than pacifism in most evolutionary examples we have and even in neural networks.
@mikebulmer9823
@mikebulmer9823 2 жыл бұрын
@@RiversJ that is a terrifying prospect. I tend to figure if there is intelligent life, the odds would be good that there is one with an even bigger head start that could have already built one. And if they were of the inclination to wipe out other species, it would make sense to just start hitting every planet out there already. Again purely conjecture, I guess I just tilt toward the "man I hope they are friendly, because of not we are in trouble"
@RiversJ
@RiversJ 2 жыл бұрын
@mikebulmer9823 It isn't necessarily the case that they're building a star system destroying death beam but that's what it would look like from the distance and having no method of communication all you could do is assume the worst and build your own and hope to heaven and hell no Novas ever trick your early detection system into firing at another system in error for they would surely retaliate.

@Tulak Hord The latter option you outline there cannot work realistically speaking, even if you sent a trillion invaders with a massive armada over a 100ly distance to invade another system, over the centuries the target system that is within a few centuries of tech level of you, would vastly overpower your now outdated forces on arrival. The thing about stellasers is that with 80% of the output of a G type star, you can destroy just about anything that isn't a neutron star or a black hole and does Not require any technology beoynd what we currently have. Building a starsystem wide dyson swarm is one of the most powerful weapons you can possibly build and is inherently visible at light speed to anyone within the side of the galaxy from you with large enough telescopes (we could build planet sized ones already if we wanted to).

Here's a hypothesis no one has considered yet... Think Morris Code... But from an alien perspective. They wouldn't have a "code" like ours. But what if it's a sort of bright/dim visual projection? An "alphabet" of some sort. As far as we know from our own history and evolution, so far, all creatures here on earth have developed some form of communication. What if what we're seeing is a "Morris" type language being visually broadcast to the galaxy at large. A shout in the vast void saying, "Here we are!" It would be interesting to have a linguistics / code experts go over all the observation data of Tabby's Star and determine if what we are really seeing as an alien type of Morris Code.

Probably not much. Tabby's star is 1400 light years away and James Webb is going to look at nearby stars in infrared. Hopefully we will be able to spectrograph nearby atmospheres but not that far.

Mining could cause the dimming, but I don't think the regularity of events almost to the hour would be a consequence-- that kind of regularity is ballistic orbits, regardless of whether the orbiting object is built or natural. It is a tiny amount of information, but this establishes a couple facts-- 1. periodicity, almost certainly due to an orbit. 2 patterns that vary predictably within a range. I like a double planet of two Jupiters with a massive ring system around each, sometimes side on to us, sometimes face on. And sometimes trading material, tearing up passing comets and asteroids. Etc. If we only need sixteen Jupiters I think a 'temporarily' stable pair of Jupiters with a ring cloud constantly in flux might do both the wild variability we see and the hinted regularity. This would sometimes give us ~1% if two Jupiters were in transit and their rings either consumed or edge-on, and significantly greater dimming if the rings were both face on and/or new material recently added. In between dimming levels when rings are canted at some in between angle. Tides in the rings would be regular, but given our piecemeal observation schedule would appear sporadic due to the long duration kaleidoscope nature of such a system. (Could also be mega-Jupiters). Regardless, precession of multiple rings in some sort of harmonic pattern might explain this. Sometimes we would see all edge on and/or not in transit, the dimming of the star is very minimal. Other times some at a partial angle, face-on while in transit, dimming moderate. Sometimes face on, dimming greater. Or a ring system around the star (and not a planet) with gaps that let light through at some angles and not others, especially if there are multiple rings at angles to each other like one of those Renaissance globes, all precessing from our point of view so sometimes aligned and sometimes not. The question is working out their harmonics. And of course, a ring world of varying breadth, or several ringworlds. Or a system of built rings around each planet in the system, with all the above precession and movements. I am on pins and needles to find out!

Suppose its alien in origin but instead of being one large object its numerous very small ones the size and/or similar properties of dust traveling together. The civilization can harness the energy while at the same time allowing the rest of the light to get through instead of blocking it. In such a case, one of the only ways of confirming this is to physically go there.

I don't know much about this, but in our own Sun-Earth-Moon system we have no solar eclipses most of the time, partial eclipses part of the time, and total eclipses only rarely. I understand that part of the reason for this is that the moon's orbital plane is tilted a bit from the solar orbital plane. Could we have a star, a planet, and an occluding object in orbit around the planet where the occluding object sometimes passes in front of the star and sometimes doesn't?

@@jimreaper1337 , I'm willing to concede that you might be right. However, suppose a large asteroid hits an inner planet, somewhat like what happened to Earth. You would get a strong ring system that gradually coalesces into a single moon. The axis of rotation of this system might not be aligned with the orbital plane. The result would be what you describe as bobbing. Some times the ring system might occlude the sun from our distant viewpoint, sometimes not. Possible?

I think what’s happening is that it’s a solar system in its infancy. They are observing the formation of planets in the stars “dust rings”. The reason the dips become shallower is that the planets that form are colliding with the other planets creating smaller dips. The large dips are the larger planets before they collide. The question is the dips either large or small, are they identical to the dips in the past?

It's possible, but there are two points against that. With protoplanetary disks you usually have lots of infrared. The star warms the material and the disk glows in infrared. No infrared was seen at this star, so whatever the material is, it must be cold. Also the material absorbs blue and red light from the star at different levels, indicating that the dust must be very fine, on level with smoke. With collisions, it tends to be bigger. The other point against it is that the star's motion and characteristics are consistent with that of an old star. Protoplanetary disks tend to be phenomena of young stars. As to the size, the dips are smaller than they were during Kepler but there is evidence of periods of large dipping in the 1930's and 1970's. So it's variable, whatever it is. At the same time however collisional models are the best we have right now.

Is it plausible, there is a second object, further out or closer, but much bigger, with a periodicity of 8.6yrs? Therefore, when the original dusty objects are transiting from our perspective, this second object or objects coincide the 4.3yr periodicity originale observations?
