If you do favour Tony Martin & Ronnie Dio over Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath then you are not a Black Sabbath fan - you are a Tony Iommi Band fan. Black Sabbath IS Butler/Ward/Iommi/Osbourne & any other line-up is simply NOT Black Sabbath.
@martinhallback5815

@@rosiemason-rk4cm Lets agree to disagree. Many (most) bands have numerous line up changes over time. Doesnt mean its another band. Iommi is clearly the most imortant member of Sabbath. No other member comes even close. Geezer was there in most line ups also including with Dio and Martin. Dio and Tony Martin era Sabbath is still Sabbath.
@rosiemason-rk4cm

@@martinhallback5815 Okay - I'll agree but I most certainly do disagree with you. All Tony Martin ever did was to make Black Sabbath sound like Europe. How you can put albums like Tyr over Sabotage is simply beyond my comprehension. In all fairness it has been said that Iommi did indeed want to change the band's name but his record company wouldn't let him & he was under legal contract to them. He did indeed change the band's name to Heaven & Hell but the album "13" should not have been a Black Sabbath album because Bill Ward was missing.

@@rosiemason-rk4cm There you go again telling people what you think Black Sabbath is and isn't. Keep your anti-Iommi opinions to yourself man. Black Sabbath is/was Black Sabbath through the 80's, 90's and even when they were forced to call themselves Heaven and Hell. Just because you are stuck on the early albums doesn't mean that anyone else has to be.

Dude! Enjoying your video reviews this evening - first watched you ranking AC/DC, then Priest and now Sabbath. But holy fuck, when you ranked 'Born Again' ahead of the debut, I had to say something! During the AC/DC video, you poured scorn of fans ranking 'Powerage' ahead of 'Back in Black' on the basis that yes, maybe we've overheard the BIB tracks but they're still classics - and I actually kinda agreed. I prefer Powerage but can acknowledge that BIB is probably better. But then... THEN... you rank 'Born Again' ahead of the debut, completely ignoring the same criteria. Ignore the fact that they blew the studio speakers when mixing the album and therefore fucked it up to the point that Gillan cried when he heard the final mix... there's no way anyone would rank any of those songs ahead of what's on the debut. All friendly chat, btw, still lovin' these reviews my friend!

I gotta go with their debut as their best. (And Bill Ward agrees). Then again, I first heard it the day it came out. Needless to say, it had an impact. BTW, Evil Woman was not on the original American release. Because it just doesn't fit. They also messed up the order of side two on the later releases. Heaven and Hell? That's a Dio album.

Heaven and Hell is pure Sabbath. A new Sabbath, but a masterpiece nonetheless as were many of those 80's albums. I love the first one but Tony was a much better guitarist by the time Sabotage came out and throughout that period of H&H through Dehumanizer. Just listen to his playing on some of the 80's tracks like Falling Off The Edge Of The World/Over And Over, Zero The Hero, Heaven & Hell, or Digital Bitch and compare them to his solo's on the early albums.

@@rosiemason-rk4cm I disagree. Black Sabbath put out many albums with many different lead singers and all sounded like Black Sabbath because of Tony Iommi. Tony's riffs, his tunings, his emotional and painful sounding solos and his sense of Darkness pervaded every Black Sabbath album. Ozzy was only there for a small portion of Black Sabbath history and discography. He didn't even write much material compared to Tony and Geezer. I did always miss Geezer though when he wasn't on board for a project.

@@rft2001 Rubbish. With Glenn Hughes's dreadful whinings on 7th Star & Tony Martin doing his best to sound like Joey Tempest, with some "Black Sabbath" albums I would never guess they were Black Sabbath in a million years. I agree that Geezer Butler & Bill Ward contributed massively to the overall Sabbath sound but a different singer is a much more blatant & obvious change in sound. Black Sabbath is Butler/Iommi/Ward/Osbourne & any other line-up is something else & that is the end of the matter.
@rft2001
@rft2001 Жыл бұрын
@@rosiemason-rk4cm You obviously are not a true Sabbath fan if you can't pick out Tony Iommi's distinctive guitar playing. I was there for them whoever was singing and most were, at least technically, better than Ozzy. In many ways, Ozzy held them back although they did produce some of their best albums with him, including probably their all time best, Sabotage. He couldn't sing over the riff and was a virtual trainwreck as well by the 2nd half of the 70's. He couldn't hold his drugs and alcohol the way the other guys could. Tony wanted to break out of the early sound. Ronnie, Glenn, Ian, Ray and Tony Martin could do that. Even when he went solo, Ozzy needed Bob Daisley to write for him. Ozzy is a colorful and loveable frontman, but he is not a songwriter, nor is he a great singer. Glenn Hughes is a much better singer than Ozzy, although I will admit that he really didn't gel with the Sabbath sound. I saw all of the incarnations live and on most of the tours, Black Sabbath put on a better show than Ozzy did thanks to the musical integrity of Tony Iommi who didn't want Sabbath to become the joke that Ozzy became over time.

Tbh, Never Say Die gets WAY too much sh!t. It's such a great album, I think it's in my top 3 possibly my number 2 right behind Sabotage. Hell I may like it more than Sabotage because I think I kind of overplayed that album at a certain point, so whereas I'd say Sabotage is their crowning achievement I do think I like listening to Never Say Die more. Gotta say though, I have a hard time getting into the post-Ozzy Sabbath albums because they tend to get a bit too "80s metal" sounding, like the production of speed metal bands and almost glam type production. I can dig some thrash metal bands (mainly just Metallica not gonna lie, can tolerate some Slayer too but no Megadeth). I'll hear some solid songs from their post-Ozzy stuff, but I don't really get into the singers they began choosing. I do like some of the stuff with Dio singing, mainly Mob Rules, but none of their albums post Ozzy era really can compete with their first 8 Edit: I think technical ecstasy is their worst Ozzy era album but I still say it's better than most of their later stuff. I think Mob Rules may be better than that one but I don't know.

I remember back in the late 80's when they did an industry poll and found that playing Sabbath songs other than the familiar songs on Paranoid, turned off the key demographic that advertisers wanted more than any other band. Especially the post-Ozzy Sabbath. That demographic was yuppies. They hated Sabbath as did much of the music industry reps and executives. So while hippie bikers, metal heads and hardcore Sabbath fans requested that radio play more Sabbath, they were afraid of alienating the advertisers and yuppies. I used to love to play Born Again to piss off the yuppies who are now still with us in their newest incarnation as "hipsters."

Without Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath is not Black Sabbath. The band even eventually admitted as much themselves by changing their name to Heaven & Hell.

No, they were Black Sabbath throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's. Sharon forced them to change the name in the 2000's as she hated DIO who wouldn't bow down to her. Although Geezer, Ozzy, Bill, Ronnie, Vinnie, etc. were all Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi is the critical part of Black Sabbath as he was there for every incarnation and carried the band for so many years. Just because you are so stuck on one phase of the band doesn't mean that everyone else has to be as stuck and regimented as you man.

@@rft2001 Yes, they do! How many original members of a band can be replaced before it is no longer the same band?

@@rosiemason-rk4cm Depends on the band and who the remaining member(s) is/are. In regards to Sabbath, Ozzy, as great as he was, was replaceable. Was Floyd still Floyd without Syd or even Roger? Mostly yes, but they lost something especially when they lost Roger. Was Priest still Priest without Halford, yes, but he was missed. Don't get me wrong, I really missed Geezer on those tours that he missed but I found Ozzy to be replaceable, especially in the case of Dio and having seen how poor Ozzy had been in the late 70's. Dio rejunvenated the band. I loved Ian's time but he wasn't the perfect fit. Same for Glenn and Ray's short stints. Tony Martin was a capable Dio clone although he lacked Dio's songwriting, charisma and vocal ability. That said, I still very much enjoyed those tours and albums (with the exception of the horrible "Forbidden") but I'd rather have had Dio, Ozzy, or even Glenn or Ian up there.

@@rft2001 Bad example for me - I never liked Pink Floyd though I wanted to & tried to. I always found them a very pretentious, twatful band solely for pseudo-intellectuals. I used to have "Piper" but gave it away to a work mate who was a fan of the band. I still have Ummagumma, Relics, Animals & Meddle but, try as I might, I could never get into them or enjoy their music. In fact it has had an unintended & opposite effect on me as I have forced myself to listen to them that much that I now find that they annoy me whereas before I simply didn't like them. Same with Queen - I cannot stand Queen & have long considered them to be the rock band for people who don't really like rock music but I'm going off on a tangent here so back to the point. With any re-incarnation of a band you have to ask yourself this; if any line-up had been the original line-up then would the band have still "made it"? I do not believe that Sabbath would have made it without Ozzy nor do I think that Priest would have made it without Halford. Indeed, Halford was not the original vocalist with Judas Priest. I have heard a version of "Junior's Eyes" with Ray Gillen & it was good. Hughes, however, I find very nasal & screechy (especially on live recordings - can't listen to "Burn" live) & I cannot stand the man. I like Sabbath with Dio, I have H&H & Mob Rules on vinyl as well as CD & have Dehumanised (the song "I" is my favourite non-Ozzy song) & The Devil You Know & they are great BUT they are NOT Black Sabbath. I Think Technical Ecstasy & Never Say Die are brilliant albums that get unwarranted criticism.

@@rosiemason-rk4cm So you really don't think that Black Sabbath would have made it if Dio was the original vocalist? I think that they would have not only made it but might have been even bigger with a technically better vocalist. Now, you could make the case that maybe Dio's style wasn't right for 1970 but I think that Iommi, Butler and Ward would have been huge with him or any other vocalist. Iommi's dark riffs and tortured solo's along with Geezer's heavy bass and Bill's contrast of bombast with sensitivity would have gotten them along no matter who was singing. I will say that Ozzy performed that function very well and more authentically than any other Sabbath vocalist because he lived those lyrics even if he didn't write many of them. Ozzy also had a charisma of his own. The only other Sabbath vocalist with real charisma was Dio (I won't count Ian as he just didn't have time to fit into such an established band). I agree with you about Queen but not Pink Floyd. I am a major Floyd fan and I love music across various genres but love psychedelic rock in particular. That is one reason that I love Iommi's music as he always had some element of dark psychedelia in his playing. I consider Born Again to be the greatest psychedelic metal album ever. I've never heard Ray sing "Junior's Eyes." Now I'll have to look for it. I'd love to hear that.
