When Scream was released, it became a runaway hit that audiences fell in love with, due in large part to the fact that it was self-aware of the horror genre and paid tribute to the classics that came before it. Scream 2 was no different, as Kevin Williamson (who wrote both scripts) infused his stories and characters with the spirit of almost every era of horror that preceded them. The Scream franchise seemed to be on an upward trajectory with the marriage between him as the screenwriter, and Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) as director.
All of that fell to the wayside though when the studio interfered and tried to rush a third movie into production. The hastiness of their decision would throw a wrench in the formula, as not every participant was able to collaborate on the same schedule, and all of the sudden Williamson was out of the project. Sadly, he took all the great storytelling with him, as his knowledge and savviness of the genre was the key ingredient that made these movies pop. Instead, the studio roped in a contract player (Ehren Kruger) and held a figurative gun to his head while he churned out a non-sequential, cliché ridden retread of the original. It wasn't his fault though, as the studio had created an unrealistic deadline. Despite the odds, they were all able to make it work, but It came at a cost.
Missing was the nuanced banter and horror-laden slanguage that populated so many scenes in the first 2 movie. Replaced instead by a ham-fisted, reflexive narrative that was more self promoting of Hollywood than any actual horror movie. But even though the hidden easter eggs and well-hidden homages aren't as plentiful, there is still some call back to the elusive horror movie trilogies that didn't get enough love here. Luckily you have me, because I did all the research for you and I'm here to fill you in on everything there is to know about Scream 3.
