When Scream was released, it became a runaway hit that audiences fell in love with, due in large part to the fact that it was self-aware of the horror genre and paid tribute to the classics that came before it. Scream 2 was no different, as Kevin Williamson (who wrote both scripts) infused his stories and characters with the spirit of almost every era of horror that preceded them. The Scream franchise seemed to be on an upward trajectory with the marriage between him as the screenwriter, and Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) as director.
All of that fell to the wayside though when the studio interfered and tried to rush a third movie into production. The hastiness of their decision would throw a wrench in the formula, as not every participant was able to collaborate on the same schedule, and all of the sudden Williamson was out of the project. Sadly, he took all the great storytelling with him, as his knowledge and savviness of the genre was the key ingredient that made these movies pop. Instead, the studio roped in a contract player (Ehren Kruger) and held a figurative gun to his head while he churned out a non-sequential, cliché ridden retread of the original. It wasn't his fault though, as the studio had created an unrealistic deadline. Despite the odds, they were all able to make it work, but It came at a cost.
Missing was the nuanced banter and horror-laden slanguage that populated so many scenes in the first 2 movie. Replaced instead by a ham-fisted, reflexive narrative that was more self promoting of Hollywood than any actual horror movie. But even though the hidden easter eggs and well-hidden homages aren't as plentiful, there is still some call back to the elusive horror movie trilogies that didn't get enough love here. Luckily you have me, because I did all the research for you and I'm here to fill you in on everything there is to know about Scream 3.

No. Scream 3 is exactly the movie I wanted it to be. The story was leading to this point, and I had grown tired of all the silliness from the first 2 movies. It delivered exactly what I expected, and even succeeded my expectations

Someone else has probably already mentioned this, but I feel like Tom’s death in the house explosion could have been a reference to Eddie Caputo’s death in the original Child’s Play, where Chucky sneaks into his house and turns on the gas stove causing the house to blow up when Eddie fires his gun.

When Sara Darling says "There's a new script every 15 mins", it isn't a reference to Scream 2. According to Wes Craven, it's actually a reference to Scream 3 itself. He said that moment reflected how the cast truly felt filming Scream 3.

Craven himself said he decided to go with this scene to add more horror and tension to the movie, as producers insisted to tone down the violence. After all I think it suits Sidney's state of paranoia in this movie. And it's a classic Craven which is always good. Even if it feels a bit random for Scream.

I’d say the scene with Sara Darling in the room at the Sunrise Studios offices with the props being stalked (and killed) by Ghostface would be a reference to the 1983 slasher film Curtains, where the final chase scene takes place in a prop house where a woman is being stalked (and later killed) by a masked killer dressed in black. All of the victims in Curtains are actresses brought to the home of a director for a group audition to find the right actress to be cast as the title role of a thriller called Audra, which is about a mentally unstable woman on the brink of a violent outburst.

In the vein of Lillard returning for this movie in one script, I'd love to see Scream 6 to go full on Seed of Chucky levels of meta by having Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy, and maybe even Hayden Panettiere coming back and playing themselves. Might be a nice nod to fans wanting their characters to return somehow. And it could serve as an emotional moment for each. Regret for Randy and Kirby, and PTSD/shock/horror for Stu.

6:49 It made sense when Mrs Loomis was making generic "I'm gonna kill you" threats in Scream 2 because she knew nothing about the horror genre but Roman's threats in 3 sucked.

I see references to other horror movies as well. For example the 1972 slasher “Silent Night Bloody Night” (aka “The Night Of The Dark Full Moon”), the 1971 giallo movie “The Fifth Cord”, a certain french speaking 80s slasher which I forgot the title of, “Whisper Kill” and a few more.

During pre-production on Scream 4, Kevin said that he couldn't bring Randy back because that would be saying that Scream 2 was a lie. I really doubt that he wanted to bring Stu. Neither Kevin nor Wes have ever confirmed Stu's theory. Gale, Sidney and Dewey would have thought of Stu during the Windsor crimes, and whether Stu was in jail should have been mentioned in the second movie. Thank you very much for your videos. Your channel is the best channel dedicated to Scream. What quality!

Matthew Lillard confirmed it. Why would they pay him to return if he was never meant to return. Also, I saw an interview with Kevin when The Following came out. He said it was his original plan for Scream 3. The main character (of the show) was taking the place of Stu.

Not horror movies, but: 1. Star Wars return of the jedi is directly mentioned plus the Leia actress cameo. 2. In the last scene, when asked which scary movie are they going to see, the detective says "you have to come and see" which can be a reference to the Russian horror/war movie Come and See. 3. In the set, Courtney Cox says "could i be more popular?" A tipical line from Courtneys partner Chandler in Friends

Scream was the first horror movie I saw back in 97 if I remember right. I remember my mom calling our cable company to order the PPV and ordered pizza and I had no clue what horror was….I remember sleeping with a hammer for 3 days and swearing to never watch that trash again!!!!! I then became hooked on the series and I think 3 was actually my favorite of the original trilogy but every one I love including the new one

One thing Scream 3 had working against it in terms of horror movie referencing was the fact that there really was no basis of reference for the film to model itself after. In the case of the original, you had a ton of slasher movies that followed the rules and cliches the movie was poking fun at and pointing out (Halloween, Friday the 13th, Prom Night, etc) The same goes for the sequel.. it uses the sequels to all of those films as a point of reference to model itself after. The body counts were bigger and the death scenes were more elaborate in almost all of the sequels that followed the films that the original referenced. The sequel even keeps in tone with the original in terms of referencing/homaging the stand alone slashers from the 70s/80s, like how Randy name drops several 80s slashers set on a school campus like Scream 2 is. Now in terms of Scream 3 there were literally no notable true horror trilogies let alone slasher trilogies for it to base itself upon. Only Part 3’s that turned out to be “just another sequel” as Randy pointed out in the video. So the focus on movie trilogies in general (Godfather, Star Wars) and using Hollywood itself as the backdrop to tell the story of Maureen Prescott’s secretive and traumatic past made logical sense.

Yeah, which makes me more aggravated that Scream 4...and yeah, I get everyone hates that movie, but hear me out here, tackled remakes and reboots because 5 now has nowhere to go unless they attack shit like Black Christmas 2019 and the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot from like 2010 or the glut of "arthouse" horror films 'cause they're cannibalizing other franchises instead. Like, Scream 5? What are they tackling here? How their style of spoofing slasher films, or slasher films in general are worn out and tired in comparison to weird arthouse flicks like Hereditary and whatever BlumHouse churns out? Scream 4 tackled social media before that shit engulfed culture in general, now Scream 5 will have the dumb task of commenting on what its already commented before and attacking shit like Blumhouse.
