As someone who was miserable in a STEM field (CS) and moved to History, now much happier and surrounded by far lovelier people, I can say you are 100% correct. There are so many STEM people who think they're smart but cannot think for the life of them. I've seen first hand them flail in philosophy and history classes, confused by every single reading, because these classes require thought and reflection, not memorizing a formula. If that's not their strong suit that's fine! But these people will be the first ones to tell me I made a mistake and am getting a useless degree lmao. I've always felt so guilty for wanting to tell off the med students in my own family (there are a lot of them) for treating my field of study as a waste of money or "not a real degree" because even though they piss me off, I kept telling myself that they're literally going to be saving lives one day so just grin and bear it. But somewhere along the middle of the pandemic, I lost my shit. I'm a full-time teacher now, but before the pandemic, while I was still in school, I worked at a daycare - a job that I, and many of my co-workers, lost once the pandemic hit because they couldn't afford to keep us on. That experience of losing a job coupled with watching fellow teachers start working during a pandemic and now being in that situation myself, my tolerance level for hearing a comment like - "Governments don't need to put that much funding in schools, how many teachers do we really need?" - was incredibly low. And the thing is, I don't think my cousin was joking when she said that. Imagine having the knowledge to save someone's life, yet not having a single clue as to what the world around you is like. I may have gotten a teaching degree, but it was still through an Intercultural Relations program. Honestly, it's like you said - just take the damn sociology course as an upper liberal and go beyond your little bubbles.

THE GIFTED KID PROGRAM Ask anyone who was a gifted kid, it’s not just the extra books, it’s the constant telling of kids their better than their peers, treating them differently, I literally got on a bus to a go to a different school when I was 9 (4th) for a block of time to learn from the gifted teacher with a small group of peers, and then we’d come back outta nowhere to regular class. I’m 19 turning 20 this month, so this is like 2011 for reference. It only gets worse from here, you’re the smart one in your class and that’s becomes your whole identity since you’re very young and don’t know yourself that well/have a fleshed out personality and then you have to compete with the other smart kids to be number one. High school is worst of all, there are now tonssssss of other smart kids, so there’s definitely someone smarter/better than you, do you break your neck to be the best? Or do you now have to learn to deal with failure? The expectations of your parents to get straight As and be perfect is also a looming issue and you’re expected to be naturally great at everything so failure is basically a crippling fear. Your future is now at stake, being valedictorian, and tons of other higher level classes/or extracurriculars you’re expected to be in and if you can’t handle it, then what kinda of gifted kid are you? You also rarely have to study since early intelligence is usually memory based, so college can be a veryyyy rude awakening. EDIT: This experience becomes significantly harder if you are black, because you will be placed in classes that are completely full of white people or non black people and will be the ONLY one or one of very FEW in the room, and will be looked down upon or treated differently subconsciously OR consciously.

Obviously I went to school with a bunch of kids who were also in my AP and Honors courses, and I can't say that too many of us(if I could even think of one who particularly stands out as stressed out)were running on anxiety fortunately. With the gifted programme discourse, I think it's important to recognise the link between being "gifted" and neurodivergence and the fact that it tends to slip through the cracks, leading to late diagnosis. From personal experience, this is something that happened to me and I have friends and family members that experienced the same. At 21, I've come to terms with that I won't pick up things as easily as a child and I did "fall behind" (tbh I'm still doing well enough, just not at the ridiculously high standards expected of me as a child). However, I don't think I would've been able to without the knowledge of my ADHD and realising that is why I struggle with studying, university etc. Since then, I have been able to adapt and let go of the "gifted" label.

I will say, I can understand the frustration of watching people in these comfy "tech" jobs (I wouldn't personally call it that, lmao) do basically nothing for most of the day making more money than essential workers/people who actually work throughout their workday. Still, its no reason to harrass the girls, thats more of a societal issue.

The bias some have towards the humanities/social science majors are rooted in misogyny/patriarchy as well. “Hard” sciences such as chemistry, biology, engineering, etc are usually seen in society as being “factual”, “active” & “real”, characteristics typically given to men. Non-stem majors are looked at as “passive”, feminine, “soft”, “unreal” & “easy” (stereotypes forced onto women) because it is deals with the nature of things/people. Even within the social sciences there are some who discredit qualitative methods because there’s no “math” or “science” involved. It’s f*ked up because college in general is not easy and everyone should focus on what they need to do to be happy. -from a fellow Sociology major💓

As someone who was a “gifted kid” it did mess me up although I don’t make it my entire personality or talk about it because it happened forever ago. But being told at such a young age that you are so extraordinary and special and then growing up and realizing you’re either and you’re just average makes a person really bitter I think. Also schools tend to really glorify certain careers and going to college so if you’re told by every teacher yeah you’re going to be a doctor/lawyer/scientist etc and then you realize what is necessary for this careers it makes sense why most people aren’t those. And schools need to tell us it’s okay if you don’t want go go college.

If you believe that your field is superior or "smarter" than other fields, please grow the hell up. STEM is not superior to, say, liberal arts or vocational schools. My young self used to believe that shit until I realised that it is utterly nonsense. Every field, every honest occupation is important, and we will need them one day. Just because two fields are different, it does NOT mean that one has to be superior to another. I think I am quite lucky to be in a friendly and supportive atmosphere while I do postgrad abroad in my STEM field, as someone who is Asian (born and raised in SE Asia), transgender, and neurodiversed. This is in the UK, so I would have totally no idea how terrible racism and misogyny issues are in the US. I am also clueless about STEM studies in the US.

re: the daily vlogs, I think the reason why white women in particular react that way to them is because a lot of us get this warped perspective in our heads where we both deflect facing our own responsibility/culpability/complacency in white supremacy by tearing down other white women who we perceive as "worse"/ "more" privileged (that way we can feel like we've done something to "fight" against oppression without ACTUALLY doing anything). I think there's some internalized misogyny:brainrot about what "representation" means there, too; if we decide xyz perceived personal flaw is because of The Patriarchy TM, but then we see someone as equally white woman as us with (we assume, based on a 60 second clip)her shit more together despite having less years on earth, our justification for our flaw crumbles, & suddenly high school jogger "makes" us feel bad. & then the default entitlement our whiteness gives us provides the brainrot to think its ok to DECIDE OFF A TIKTOK THAT A MINOR IS LESS OPPRESSED THAN US & THAT MAKES IT OK TO BLAME THEM FOR OUR OWN INSECURITIES, instead of just scrolling away from a video that makes us sad lmao.

About the Day in the Life hatred, maybe part of it is because some people take the title of these videos to heart. They truly think that this is how each day of their lives go, sipping lemonade and doing no work while getting paid. It’s a part of another topic of how people only show the best moments of their life which makes them seem interesting to strangers, even though those moments only happen every now and then. We only see the highs, never the lows

@@emilybeach238 I meant where is the support for it on this video and this comment section. I'm a woman and believe me I like many women have dealt with sexual assault and I've also dealt with just everyday petty sexist crap from men. I'm 50. I lived through a lot of women not being believed and not being taken seriously. So I was not quick to believe that Amber was lying. However if you look into this case you'll see that she is the abuser and he is the victim. She lied about abuse in a very public way that will set back people believing women that were really abused. She is not somebody to be supported.

The push for women in STEM has always bothered me too. Yes, it's good to get more representation for women in fields that they were underrepresented in previously BUT if women are excelling in the humanities and social sciences, why not highlight, value and pay them more? Maybe I'm crazy but there's a subtle misogyny behind this a la "you have to be masculine to be taken seriously"
