In what reality is Zoe a broke college student? Even in the context of the show she isn't. Like her parents are rich and pay for everything. And before you say they cut her off they did no such thing. They still paid all essential bills. Everything else like her japanese candy subscription has to be funded by her. She is not a broke college student. But yeah her hair being done up differently everyday??? That's not realistic even if you have money. The best you can give us is the look of the week. I mean I keep my hair braided up the entire semester because it is way too much work to even style it every week. Again the show is not being realistic at all. Plus someone did say the writers room is made up of black men over the age of 40. It tracks.

WHO DOES THAT HAPPEN TO ??? and then she dropped out FINALLY 🙄 (olivia jade tease PLEASE 🤧) and when they started this season with that beyonce homecoming NONSENSE for literally NO REASON and then ended with zoey dresssed as aaliyah for literally NO REASON it’s like they just do stereotypes to remind people that the show is supposed to be aimed at a black teen audience 🥱 anyways stream good trouble because they’re ACTUALLY making points

I hate watch that show. It’s such a bad depiction of college. They was in the bar freshman year, not sneaking in or anything just there. The RA throwing parties on the floor with alcohol. A floor event?! That would never happen. They show class scene every five episodes. The HBCU themed trailer for the new season when Cal U is a PWI. I’m starting to think none of writers have been to college.

Zoey's life is unrelatable. She grew up in a rich family and she was spoiled HEAVILY. She abandoned her friend for popularity [Ana]. Three boys were fighting over her and she choose Luka for unknown reasons. Became a fashion designer or something idk. As a white person, I really wish these producers would stop assuming that we (the white audience) wouldn't watch a show with a minority lead, and that they have to white-wash everything for us. It feels insulting - they're assuming that we're either completely dumb, or as racist as they are. Even if I can't personally relate to a character (obviously, if the show is specifically about the black experience, I won't be able to relate to that) I can still enjoy the show and enjoy seeing a story and an experience that's different to my own. This has already been proven - shows and movies with minority leads can do extremely well, even with a white audience.

@@chowderscrib Not to excuse the bad writing, but I feel like that is a part of figuring out what being grown is. As a college student I've had multiple conversations discussing complicated issues in which we never actually answer the questions we are asking because we can't. We're still hella young and trying to figure things out. We don't have the answers. Shit, most grown ass adults don't. I feel like Grown-ish can occupy this space about being a Black girl in college without having to be all about Black and social issues because at the end of the day everyone's experience is different and there is not one way to be Black in a space. The writers could definitely handle things better, but you can't solve complicated issues like colorism, police violence, and mental health in a 22 minute episode.

My biggest issue with Grownish is the blatant homophobia towards Naomis ex boyfriend,Dave. All the guys were like “Oh, you can’t be with a guy who’s been with other guys”. And tbh i feel like a gay male would’ve been better for the show. Also the way how the only brown/dark skin person was a man and we NEED more brown and dark skin actors.

I can see what ur saying tho ... when people are racist to the community today it’s towards everyone in the community... and when it’s colorism it’s like a shot towards you personally as you can feel more alone

For anyone looking for a Netflix show w great dark skin female (and male) representation in a PWI, Dear White People does this well imo. Black women are presented as beautiful, intelligent and to me, most importantly- multifaceted. Nobody's the token black girl. Each black character in the show has deep storylines, where they evolve and change and grow. My favourite is Coco, who, unlike the lame attempt of Zoey in grownish, is dark skin, bitchy, but with her bitchiness and character actually explained. You come to love her. dwp shows black people as vulnerable, angry, anarchistic, emotional, loving. The show also explores issues such as colourism, police brutality, being lgbt and black, being mixed. Yes the protagonist is biracial, but the dark skin women don't feel like side characters. I feel they are portrayed in a better light than the protagonist in many ways, and their voices don't ever feel muted. Oh and it's funny. Sorry for this long ass review, I just want more people to see themselves in television.

Grown-ish makes The Neighborhood on CBS seem like a decent show. I said what I said. I find Bob Hearts Abishola a better "mixed" show and I give them credit for them taking on a different cultural clash angle than what others do a cop-out with.

😂😂😂😂I'm dying of laughter, I googled a picture of the director, and I thought Kenya Barris was a woman this whole time. A lot of stuff makes sense now and your comment is 10x funnier to me.

I just can’t believe how the series is in its third season and literally NOTHING is happening. EVERYTIME I watch an episode it ends and I’m just like?? Nothing else?? I think what also might save it is to move it to a platform that would allow a longer run time but that’s if and only if the writing improves
