Because of the heat I would go with the taupe color back. It would make the interior brighter as well as cooler. The headliner failed not because of bad glue but rather the intermediate foam layer degraded and the glue no longer had anything to stick to. Be sure to scrutinize your sunroof drain hoses as this would be the best time for replacing them due to drying out and cracking in the future. Seen too many people make this mistake over the years with restorations. You remind me of me at your age. At 62 still have my day job working on cars even though I don't have to anymore.

@@RestoreIt I also vote for the lighter shade. I did a black headliner in my teens and it was unbearably hot. I live in Florida and there's a reason it's called the sunshine state. But even from a ascetic perspective the lighter color will make it feel more open. The dark makes it feel smaller somehow. At least to me anyways.

I still remember that I started watching your videos a few years ago. I really learned so much from these videos. videos like this made me start overhauling and selling mopeds, because they are nice and small and you don't need a large workshop for them. but now I'm tired of mopeds and I bought my first e30!! Glad you're back Steve! For color, I would definitely stay original. Black would make for a very dark look to the interior as well as likely trap more heat. Seems like the original gray was a shade or two lighter underneath the grab handle mounts. Suppose that could be due to dirt, time and sun.

Nice to see the workshop back in action. It's all a personal choice for the headliner but I would use the original colour. It will feel more airy and lighter. Black might make it feel a little gloomy and black shows every speck of dust. I had a car with a very dark grey interior and even in sunny Australia, it still felt gloomy. Looking forward to more restoration. 😊

Since you're that far in, be sure that you take the time to clean your sunroof drain channels - there's a few ways to do it but typically the "nicest" way is to use thin plastic tubing attached to a vacuum to suck as you feed it down the drain, as you don't want to push the junk all to one place only to find a blockage you can't remove.

Glad you are back on a single project and hoping to see this taken to the finished state. I loved the workshop series too, lot to learn from it, but admittedly already mostly outside of a hobbyist budget, but quite the dream stuff ;) This car does look a decent foundation. Eventhough the engine and trans was swapped (still reversible) staying with the original headliner material will likely bring you more cash. Initially I though you’ll use this the move stuff around and that’s why the priority was upped, but if you are not keeping it, original is the way to go.
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 3 ай бұрын
Thanks, Devision. This one is getting finished ASAP. It certainly won't be as in-depth as the Sport, but as soon as it's good enough for sale, it can go and the main project will continue until completion. Which has been the main priority for way too long now. I may put its original engine back in, this is an interesting idea. It has undergone a complete nut and bolt restoration and overhaul. So would go well with the engine bay. I did use this car for exactly that before I moved to Spain and not long after moving there, I bought a Spanish car due to being pulled over so many times(being in a UK-plated car). Thanks again!

Just made the decision to go black on my headliner for my SAAB 900 resto. My headliner material is paperboard and unfortunately it cracked due to stress at the skinny bits when removing. I went with black specifically to better hide the fixes I made as, although the fixes are pretty decent, they may be seen with a lighter material. I have biege trim (handles, sun shades, and sunroof trim) similar to you have and I will admit, I'm anxious to see the final result. I'm just finishing up final body work and paint, and haven't re-installed anything just yet. I have a feeling that the black will make the cabin of my SAAB feel smaller, but hopefully more cozy. We'll see...

The glue on headliners does not fail, the foam breaks down from age and heat. Then the foam glued to the headliner separates from the rest of the foam attached to the backing material.

Yay ,good to see you back working on the Touring. I’d say stick to the original colour, yes i like the idea of black, but having followed you for what seems like years now, and knowing your attention to detail, i think you wouldn’t be able to leave it at that, and sun visors and other bits of trim would have to be changed as well. Given that you’re going to sell, i would do the minimum amount of required jobs, but with your usual best work. Just my thoughts. Steve

It feels good to be back on it! And good points there. Thanks for the comment, Steve, much appreciated.

Regarding headliner color, from experience, change it and the sun visors to black and preferably the A-pillar. Create a 'black perifephery" in front of you. When the sun glares and you put the visor down the positive effect is maximized as opposed to light color interior. Cheers🤙🏻

Black headlning is nice (the headlining on my Mercedes W204 is black) but I think it would be best to keep it the original colour. It is obvious that the foam has just disintegrated.

I’d leave the original color the darker colors tend make the interior hotter in the summer months anyway

I'd also be sure to check the speakers if they're still factory ones, as the surrounds are probably very deteriorated.

Chose the color you like or think others will like in case you decide to sell it. Just make sure and remove all the old foam before you try to adhere a new cloth in or it will fail in no time. Tips a soft wire brush with light pressure makes fast work of it.

Use black for the headliner. It looks way better. Did it to my Touring as well, but remember, you will need to get black sun visors as well…..

If the colour is unified with other parts leave it as is if not then you may change it as you like. Or change it with the seats also.

When it comes to the color .... definitely sticking to the original. That silver already wasn't so often sold compared to the red and black ones back in the days (at least here in Bavaria), so it's beginning to become somewhat exotic, and I like that decent, elegant color on the otherwise a bit .... uhm, "rural" E30s ... Thanks for sharing. Edit: I'm looking forward to what You'll turn towards next in terms of restoration (after the 325 will be done).

Original colour for headliner. - if you can source it. I hope the sunroof panel is ok? Great content thanks and will benchmark for jobs on my 318i Touring.

Thanks, Simon. Yes, choosing the colour is one thing, finding it is another. The sunroof panel is a surprisingly great condition, as is the rest of the roof.
