Anole lizard care is not difficult, but it does need to be specific and fairly exact in order for anoles to thrive in captivity. Anoles are beautiful and fun pets to keep but not something that someone should buy at the pet store on a whim without doing the proper research and setting an enclosure up ahead of time. So if you're thinking about getting an anole as a pet, please watch this video.

Finally someone said HOW MUCH to feed them!! Thank you! My boyfriend works at a supermarket and one came in on some flowers from Florida and the store would have killed it! I asked if he's bringing it home and he did! Now it's in a plastic bin with sticks and some holes until he's out of work so we can go to the pet store! Thank you for the video!!

Thank you for this video. I want a lizard. I am not about dragons their care is bit more. I have all sorts of reptile lights. I love how you set their enclosure. They seem happy. I only have a 20 gal lon reptile tank. But I bet I can make them a second floor or basking cage similar to my turtles.

Very informative. I'm in Austin, TX, and saw one hanging around outside about 3 wks ago, but this was during a cold winter spell, so it seemed very uncharacteristic for it not to be in hiding from the elements. She (no dewlap) was very approachable, and just to get her out of the cold, I brought her in, and set a very temporary shelter. Now, I already have her in a 10 gal terrarium, UVB light, some things to climb, and really spraying the inside w/water 2-3x/day. With this being winter, do they not eat much, having stocked up during summer?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I would think they would eat whenever food is available to them. Mine are shy about eating and rarely will do it in front of me if they know I’m there. But, for the 3 I have, I put quite a few small crickets in there enclosure every other day. And even though they don’t like to eat in front of me, the crickets disappear and they do poop a lot, so I know they’re eating. It may be yours is not eating because it’s acclimating to its new situation.

So I went to petco because my daughter recently got an anole as a gift for her birthday. I bought the enclosure kit that was for chameleons because it was the one I felt was most closely suitable for her anole. It included the foliage, basking light, uvb light, a thermometer, & I also bought a water dripped that is supposed to mimic natural water flow. My problem is that when I got the cage home and put it together it just that- a cage. Because it’s a cage and not glass I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep the humidity up. Any advice!?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles Жыл бұрын
I hate to tell you, but a screen chameleon enclosure is really not a good enclosure for an anole. It won’t hold humidity and it would be best to have glass so droplets of water can be licked off the glass as well as foliage. A dropper might be okay for an anole, honestly, I don’t know. But I think dripped or not, you would still need to mist down the enclosure a couple of times a day. It’s possible that an anole may not survive in a screen enclosure.

Im in florida and a brown anole ended up in my glass fireplace. No idea how it got in or how long it had been there, but its in bad shape. Ive been trying to nurse it back to health for days, its drinking water from an eyedropper but I dont think it has eaten any of the crickets or mealworms i put in a little terrarium with it
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles Жыл бұрын
Well, reptiles can go longer without eating than they can without drinking, so hydration is really important, especially for anoles. So it’s good if he’s taking drinks. I’ve never hand fed an anole, but you could try tong feeding it. Just hold a small cricket to its lips with a pair of feeder tongs. I don’t know if that would work or not. Misting the enclosure so there are droplets on the glass or plants is important. And just keep trying to give it crickets. That’s about all you can do, other then trying to limit any amount of stress on it.

Hi, I really enjoy your videos. I have a few care questions if you can take the time to answer them. They're basically related to why my green anole is constantly brown, which I know is typically related to stress, I'm just not sure why it may be stressed. I have one male green anole in an 18x18x24 bioactive enclosure with multiple plants and branches. I mist the enclosure twice per day and the enclosure has an ambient humidity of around 60% with spike during misting. The ambient temperature in the enclosure is about 78 degrees with a hot spot that is typically from 88-91 degrees surface temperature. He also has a UVB light and there is an LED light over the tank for the plants. He eats (some) dusted crickets but usually doesn't appear interested in them, which is consistent with the idea of him being stressed out. He does drink water droplets off of the glass in the morning and he has access to a water dish but never seems to use it, which I expect. One other thing to note is that I bought him from a local pet shop in the city I live in that has an awesome reptile section. Unfortunately, their green anole setup is basically like an 18x18x36 screen enclosure with probably 80 anole in it, basically piled on top of one another. I let my enclosure establish for about three weeks and then purchased this little guy about a week and a half ago. At first I was just concerned that all of the stress of being caught, shipped, and kept in inhumane conditions while at the store may have contributed to the distress, but its been almost two weeks and he is still as brown if not mores so than when I purchased him. Are there any thoughts, questions, or suggestions you have about what might be going on?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 2 жыл бұрын
I think with anoles, they are pretty flighty and skittish by nature, so it's hard to judge their level of stress by that. It sounds like you have everything set up exactly right. Mine are shy about eating in front of me so I rarely see them eat. Sometimes the only way I know they're eating is because the crickets disappear and I see their poop. If you don't see the poop and you think they aren't eating you might make sure the crickets you're giving them aren't too big. They don't really use a water bowl but just lap water from the plants and the glass, so it's good that you're misting them. Mine change color pretty regularly but are brown plenty of the time, brown more often during the day and green more often at night when they are sleeping. If everything seems normal except for the color changing I think they are probably fine. I could be wrong but I don't think being brown a lot of the time is a bad thing. I don't think it's like brown is bad and green is good. It's easy to worry about any reptile and wonder if you're doing everything right for it. The fact that you're concerned is a good thing because it means you're conscious of doing everything you can for them. How long have you had them? If you've had them for a while and everything seems normal except for the color changing, I think you probably don't have anything to worry about. Hope that helps.

@@WonderfulWorldReptiles Thank you for the quick and thoughtful response. I appreciate the support and I appreciate you saying that its not necessarily that it's like green is good and brown is bad. I will add that although he is brown its not like the dark brown/close to black color that they get when they're terrified and feeling awful. I can appreciate him being skittish about eating in front of me, as well. He is active and displays at/around me in general and seems very active during the day and I know he drinks water off of the glass near his basking area. I'll have had him for two weeks come Saturday the 16th, so it's not been long. It's amazing how although I've had reptiles for most of my 28 years and have been providing actually good care to them since I've been a teenager I've never had a green anole, and even though I consider myself somewhat experienced theres a ton to learn and understand beyond basic care for a new species. I work from home and have his cool setup on a table next to my desk, so when it comes to being shy about eating, I get it. I'm kind of constantly looking over at him lol. Anyway, thank you for your help and keep making videos, they're really good!!

I’m new to caring for a green anole I need to use a UVB light and a heat lamp as well correct? How do I know what wattage to use for either light?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 8 ай бұрын
That is a good question. I think for both it could depend on the size of the terrarium and the distance from the light to the basking spot. Anoles definitely need uvb. I use a 5.0 zoomed uvb coil bulb. You’ll hear people say that the coil bulbs are not good, but they are perfectly fine. I’ve tested them. For heat it can be a little more tricky. What would really help you would be to get an infrared temperature gun so you can take the temperature at different spots in the vivarium and make adjustments as you need to get the temperature gradient correct. I’ve sometimes had to switch to a lower wattage bulb if it’s too hot or switch to a higher wattage bulb if it’s not warm enough, or raise or lower the light. Mariah from reptifiles says, and I agree, that it’s better to be a little too cool then to be too hot. At the same time, 3 or 4 degrees in either direction of the optimal temperature would be perfectly fine for them. It’s really good that you’re doing the research and putting the right thought into it. Hope that helps.

How do you keep air humidity up? I'm considering get an anole, but I've had problems in the past with air humidity I've bought misters bur I feel like I can never consistently keep humidity up
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 2 жыл бұрын
I use a big garden mister that I got at the hardware store and mist the enclosure every morning and evening. It’s a bioactive enclosure and has a false bottom, so the bioactive substrate and the plants help hold humidity. Plus there’s always a certain amount of water in the false bottom that also comes up as humidity. How often and how much you mist could depend on how dry or wet it is where you live. With the anoles it’s important to mist it enough to leave droplets for them to drink from. An enclosure with more vertical space then horizontal is best and you can also partially cover the top to help hold humidity.
